I believe I remember seeing an interview where he said he took a lot of inspiration from the book.
Yup, the Director, Tim Burton, took inspiration from Killing Joke, the Writer, Sam Hamm however, did not.
I mean the parallels to the Joker's origin in the book and the movie are too similar to be coincidence.
Remember that The Killing Joke did not create Joker's origin, it retconed it.
The Joker was originally just a crook who took a dive into the chemical vat, not a failed Comedian, Nicholson Joker was just a crook.
I agree with you that the look and direction of that scene was influenced by Killing Joke (perhaps even some of the set-up), but the scene itself was already written in 1986 and was based on the original Joker origin from Detective Comics #168.
