Oops, Hi.

So I did some careful retooling of my old list after some thinking and seeing a few more movies, and I think I've got something really solid here now.

It's in honor of Batman v Superman being released this month, so enjoy my most recent definitive list of the top 10 CBMs of all time. In video!

Whenever I see these top ten lists, the number 1 spot is immediately written off in my head as TDK. Lol

Really though, I doubt it will ever be topped by another CBM. TDK wasn't just a spectacular super-hero film, it was a viable contender for best picture (still a crime is wasn't nominated IMO).

For kicks my top 10 at the moment would look like this (using your criteria);

(10) Captain America: TFA

(9) GotG

(8) X-Men DOFP

(7) V for Vendetta

(6) The Winter Soldier

(5) Iron Man

(4) Watchmen

(3) Spider-Man 2

(2) Man of Steel

(1) The Dark Knight

Batman (1989) isn't a loose adaptation of the Killing Joke, its a pretty straightforward adaptation of Detective Comics #27 & Batman #1

Batman's script was started in 1985 and largely finalised in 1986, so it actually predates The Killing Joke, the movie itself was in production after The Killing Joke had been released though, and Burton was a fan so there is influence in tone and art-design.

IIRC the only major late additions to the script were -

  • The Joker being the killer of Bruce's parents
  • Vicki Vale being let into the Batcave and told Bruce's identity
  • Some of the aspects of Bruce and Vicki's first date

@silent_bomber: I believe I remember seeing an interview where he said he took a lot of inspiration from the book. I mean the parallels to the Joker's origin in the book and the movie are too similar to be coincidence.

Yup, the Director, Tim Burton, took inspiration from Killing Joke, the Writer, Sam Hamm however, did not.

Remember that The Killing Joke did not create Joker's origin, it retconed it.

The Joker was originally just a crook who took a dive into the chemical vat, not a failed Comedian, Nicholson Joker was just a crook.

I agree with you that the look and direction of that scene was influenced by Killing Joke (perhaps even some of the set-up), but the scene itself was already written in 1986 and was based on the original Joker origin from Detective Comics #168.

I really enjoyed this list. I also think that The Dark Knight belongs in first place.

@noone301994: I just have the most fun watching it. It isn't better than cap 2 or iron man, and I think the Avengers is overrated.

Oh well...Still a good list and Scott Pilgrim doesn't get enough credit since that was a awesome movie IMHO.

Cool video. However, I think X-Men: First Class is quite a bit better than "relatively solid".

oh well
oh well

Here's my list:

  1. X-Men: Days of Future Past
  2. X-Men: First Class
  3. Road to Perdition
  4. Ghost World
  5. Scott Pilgrim
  6. Hellboy
  7. Dredd
  8. The Crow
  9. Blade
  10. Weird Science

@eyedcyou: Thor vs Iron Man scene >>>>>>>>>> entire Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

To me, I had more fun watching individual scenes than that entire movie. Not that it was bad, just not that great.

@sprior93: Didn't even realize Weird Science was based on a comic... Nice list anyways. And I really like First Class, I just think it's the little brother to DoFP

Just your opinion I guess. That scene in Avengers did nothing for me.

@kritikalmassx: I know, it's heresy. I still really like The Avengers, but I think people are a little too blinded by the 'omg look at all the superheroes' to notice some of the problems of the film. Scott Pilgrim is luv.
