Every Wednesday, hundreds of new comic books are released, and figuring out what books are worth reading can be a daunting task. Luckily, we're here to help you out with that. Here are five upcoming issues, in no particular order, you should consider buying on Wednesday, August 10.

All-Star Batman #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by Scott Snyder
  • Art by John Romita Jr

DC is going Batman-heavy during its Rebirth initiative. The newest series has longtime Batman writer Scott Snyder returning with John Romita Jr on art. This creative team will be reimagining some of Batman's greatest villains, and the issue will tackle Two-Face. Snyder has done wonders with Batman, so this is a must-buy for any Dark Knight fan.

Wonder Woman #4

No Caption Provided

  • Published by DC
  • Written by Greg Rucka
  • Art by Nicola Scott

While this book is alternating between stories every issue, the new Wonder Woman series has been phenomenal. It's one of the best starts in years. This week's issue deals with Wonder Woman's origin. The book revolves around her first meeting a man who washed ashore Themyscira, which in turn will lead to her becoming the character fans are familiar with. It's got a lot of promise.

Black Monday Murders #1

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Image
  • Written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Art by Tomm Coker

If you're looking for something a bit further from the traditional superhero stuff, Black Monday Murders may be up your alley. Writer Jonathan Hickman dives into occultism and magic in this new story. Hickman is a bit of a high-concept writer, but overall, his pieces tend to be incredibly brilliant.

Black Panther #5

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Marvel
  • Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates
  • Art by Chris Sprouse

A new arc starts this week in Black Panther, building on the last story, which has the character's home country of Wakanda falling apart. It's been an incredible read thus far, seeing a country unravel right before our eyes. Chris Sprouse (Thors) joins as the guest artist this week. This book is truly redefining who Black Panther is.

Vision #10

No Caption Provided

  • Published by Marvel
  • Written by Tom King
  • Art by Gabriel Walta

Sadly, Vision is coming to a close at issue #12. The final act is here as Vision plans his revenge in this series, which has horror undertones. We're about to see Vision take on other heroes, and it should be an exciting ride. Writer Tom King has crafted something brilliant that feels like nothing else we've read at the company.

Looking for more books to check out this week? Here are a few more recommendations.

  • Deathstroke Rebirth #1
  • Detective Comics #938
  • Flintstones #2

Image

  • Birthright #18

@the_stegman: I know right? Normally I wouldn't even consider Superwoman, I'm always meh on Deathstroke and I don't need a third Batman book in All-Star but they are all essentials. And New Super-Man was surprisingly good so I have to read issue 2 and even the Red Hood Rebirth special has intrigued me enough to try another issue.

Is this the movie version of how Diana came to man's world or a re-working of her original origin?

@mark_stephen: nothing is clear, we dont know if the movie will show us her origin or which of all will it choose.

As for her comic history, you could say this is her New52 origin since it has never been shown since the 2011 reboot (although there was a little story in the Secret Origins series that featured WW but I dont know what was that about), but we still dont know if this is a retelling or a retcon of her pre-New52 origin

Is it a bigger book, at least 40 pages? I'm interested but for $5 there better be more than the average 22 pages and if it's $5 for each issue like All Star Batman then i'm out.

Old Man Logan is good. I just picked up 9 and 10 today. Read them and called Marvel to switch my print subscription from All New Wolverine to Old Man Logan. Effectively I changed the comic book channel from Lifetime to FX.

Black Panther for sure but this list is always a stooge for DC/Marvel. Until I get to the LCS tomorrow I won't know what alternatives came in. I'm surprised anything from Image or Valiant even got mentioned.

Black Monday murders was really intriguing, read it twice already a fantastic mix of conspiracy theory, crime thriller, and creepy horror. Glad I took a chance and picked it up, excited to see where it goes.

You get 52 pages with no ads for $5 so the price is at least justified. It was a long read because I had to take my time, go back a few times to try and fully understand it (if you pick it up you'll see what i'm talking about). It is interesting, not sure I fully understand it yet and I have no idea where it's going but I will get #2 to see if it still holds my interest.

When I bought it, my LCS said there must be some hype to the book because he ordered 20 and I got the last one. That's outselling some of the better known titles that cost less.

My best pencils award goes to Dexter Soy on Red Hood And The Outlaws. Last week I gave the award to Juan Ferreyra on Green Arrow 4. He did pencils and color on that book. Best story this far has been The Accused by Marc Guggenheim. I like the court room approach, and the out of the ordinary story. Not sure how I feel about The Initiative 2.
