Dragon Ball franchise or the DCAU - Which do you like more?
I'll go with Dragon Ball. The DCAU is wonderful, but it's obviously derivative of DC Comics, whereas Dragon Ball is it's own thing.
Better written stories, character development, and depth: DCAU.
More iconic, better action, better hype: DB Franchise.
@orangevegeta: and the dragon ball anime's are derivative/adaptations of the dragon ball manga by toriyama. What exactly is your point here?
DCAU. DBZ is good not great imo. But every future installment past the the cell saga is a repetitive, self contradictory cluster fuck with drawn out pacing.
DCAU is tighter paced, more streamlined, better characterization (show made me like superman) and more varied (it's episodic but still has an over arching plot)
@killianduclark: The op didn't say Dragon Ball the anime. They said Dragon Ball the franchise. Also I'm not trying to diss the DCAU, if that's what you think.
@metalgary: What exactly do you mean? Dragon Ball characters have personality.

Just saying the DCAU characters are more interesting than the Dragon Ball Characters when it comes to personality and power levels.
DCAU. Aside from characterization I can hardly there is development with respect to worldbuilding that isn't a shenanigan. Their ideas are pretty much stuck with DBZ at a certain point(mostly Namek or Frieza Saga).
I bailed on DB years ago halfway through the Buu Saga as it just got silly to me, so I can’t speak on anything after that. My vote goes to the 90’s/mid 00’s Bruce Timm era DCAU. I just feel like the story arc’s and characters are better written, and there’s better voice acting in comparison to DB.

@infantfinite128: Its ironic when you say that Dragon Ball "is it's own thing" and yet they are derivative of their own show through and through like the caricatures of their own disappointment. They are typical shenanigans of SSJ. DCAU as an adaptation has developed beyond limit and most of their main stories and characters are OG.

@vishop_: I quoted it because it was the first comment I saw that was in the same ballpark of what I was thinking, but maybe I misunderstood what the commenter meant.
I was thinking from the perspective of if I could only keep one. Voting "Dragon Ball franchise", I could still keep other DC comics, movies, video games, and tv series.
If I went with the DCAU, I wouldn't have any of the Dragon Ball manga, tv shows, or video games.
@orangevegeta: ummmmmm the manga?
@avenging_x_bolt: The op said Dragon Ball as a franchise not just as an anime. The Dragon Ball franchise includes the manga.
@orangevegeta: that's true. my bad.
@darthsuper: Same, I guess one reason why I am not into either is because I didn't grow up watching them. If I try watching them now, having already developed a pretty high standard, I will not love them as much as most.
Dragon Ball
Spite

Eh you can say the same thing about LOTR where people are quite nostalgic about its adaptation from novels. DCAU on other THE hand has its own creative stories and development of so many characters especially during JLA/JLU with certain exceptions of course.
What do you think my answer is???
The smart answer. Dragon Ball franchise because you get video games too.

Thanks for taking exactly what I wanted to say and puting it into words.
