Does speed always give someone an advantage in a fight?
It depends. You can have all the speed in the world but if you can't hurt your opponent you can't win.
Yes. Having superior speed to your opponent is an advantage.... What kind of question is that lol?
Advantage in a fight which when paired with another factor can lead to victory - Yes.
Autowin by itself - Hell no.
Usually. It does 90% of the time, but what if you are fighting an invincible reality warper? Then what?
Obviously it is an advantage but it is not necessarily better than other advantages, it depends on the other attributes of the fighters.
Of course not. Everyone knows being faster than your opponent is a massive disadvantage. This is why professional boxers eat a ton of fatty foods and don't exercise. So they can reduce their speed so that their opponent is faster, thereby gaining the edge.
Don't you remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Slowness > Speed every time.
It can be a slight to a huge advantage, but it depends on a lot of factors. Flash, for example, has a massive advantage over most characters in his class. He’s got the power to put down a lot of high tiers, and he’s almost impossible to hit if he wants to be.
An advantage, yes. A winning advantage, no.
No. If your opponent has some sort of anti speed shtick then it’s irrelevant...speed is irreverent when facing someone like the Turtle or a reality warper...
Ofcourse it's an advantage, if I can harm you before you can think to do something, you're getting stomped.
No. If your opponent has some sort of anti speed shtick then it’s irrelevant...speed is irreverent when facing someone like the Turtle or a reality warper...
But what if your not? What if its something like spider-man vs luke cage or superman vs hercules?
Well if the character is able to efficiently and effectively use it in a combat situation, then sure.
Sure it gives you an advantage, but it's not the X Factor that CV has made it out to be.
superman vs thor
superman vs thanos
now guess where speed will give clark advantage
it depends on who your opponent is
@brucerogers: Barry Allen isnt going to overcome Nekron just because he runs fast. There is a point that speed cant trump power
If all other capabilities are commensurate, then a clear speed advantage is a big deal in the real world. From boxing matches to aerial dog fights.
In comic books, it's not so much. Super fast paragons like Superman and Gladiator regularly get tagged by regular bricks who have no super speed showings.
@kgb725: Hence the "effectively" in my original post.
No. If your opponent has some sort of anti speed shtick then it’s irrelevant...speed is irreverent when facing someone like the Turtle or a reality warper...
Actually, speed is the best advantage to have over a reality warper. It is the only stat that could let you hit them before they start reality warping, and if you're able to deliver a knock out first hit you've won.
Conversely, if you were significantly stronger or more durable it wouldn't matter because you'd get reality warped before you could touch them.
It depends on how much speed person A has over person B. It is an advantage yes, but it is not an automatic winning advantage.
For example, in Game of Thrones, one of the most famous fights takes place Mountain (Gregor Clegane) vs Viper(Oberyn martell) where the Viper had a clear advantage and should have won the fight due to his speed and skill expertise.
Then you have Fox Quicksilver who was far faster than Apocalypse but Apocalypse managed to catch up to his reaction time to some extent and beat Quicksilver, even though QS was knocking Apocalypse left and right.
Having a superior anything usually gives a person an advantage (ie, superior speed, superior strength, superior intelligence, superior height, weight and reach, etc.)
This is also very true during a fight or battle.
Trust me, it does. I fought this one guy who never landed a single punch on me despite his size. I felt like Mayweather.
@metaljimmor: If they can warp reality speed is irrelevant they can control time and space. You can’t beat that by punching them really fast...
These two examples come to mind:
If Your Opponent can Speed-steal and has enough Speed to keep up with You so he does not get blitzed, and has a chance to use this Power, then it is a downright weakness and a Death Sentence.
If Your Opponent has the ability that makes it so that if You touch/damage him, he hurts You or the damage is reflected at You, like an electric Force-field, then it can be pretty useless in a direct Fight.
If they can warp reality speed is irrelevant they can control time and space. You can’t beat that by punching them really fast...
That depends entirely on the reality warper in question. Not all characters with reality warping power are also invulnerable space gods. Many are basically wizards that still need to think in order to begin using their powers, and if you can hit them before they start to control time and space then you have a solid chance of winning.
Look at Thanos in Infinite War. Reality warping power and still capable of being taken off guard.
@metaljimmor: Good Point; but I mean actual reality warpers not people using a device where there is a disconnect in your power. Blitzing someone like even a lower power version of Mylixplyz(tv versions) wouldn’t matter...
There doesn't need to be a device involved. The brain only processes information so fast. If you had reality warping powers and someone shot you from behind you'd be dead because you wouldn't have time to think "stop bullet" before it had already penetrated your skull.
Same principle with a speedster. Unless the reality warper has already put up their defenses or are just innately invulnerable the speedster will be able to hit the reality warper before the reality warper's neurons fire to trigger their abilities.
You can look at almost any magic using character as an example. Even ones who can use magic at the speed of thought like Dr. Strange are still vulnerable if something hits them before they finish processing the thoughts needed to cast a spell.
@metaljimmor: OK, you right.
It depends. You can have all the speed in the world but if you can't hurt your opponent you can't win.
