But if DCEU was directed first and it’s succeed, wouldn’t that makes some difference?

MCU would have successful anyway because it was done phenomenally and tactifully. Aside from Fox's X Men, there was no other major CBM franchise out. MCU set the stage for that.

DCEU has its own internal issues from the get go that would have caused them problems anyway. One being rushing films and the lack of origin stories, as well as lackluster writing. It didn't help that they were and are constantly compared to the MCU since it's their direct rival franchise. They always have the MCU shadow to get out of.

BUT they are doing signifcantly better now with the last solo movies and all of the origin movies are strong enough to build off of. Hopefully this grows into the phenomenal universe it could be.

@rijehu: Well would they still have rushed anyway if they were first? My understanding was they just rushed to play catch-up. If they were first then not sure that would be the case.

Either way, the MCU would have been more successful due to the way that they planned out their universe and stories. Since they actually took the care to develop their characters from the very beginning, the audience would have been more inclined to see their movies instead of the DCEU's movies.

Even if the DCEU movies had came out before the MCU movies, if they had started out their universe with movies like "Batman vs Superman" and "Justice League" without developing the characters properly, then their movies still would have failed regardless of whether or not they started first since the audience wouldn't be that invested in the characters.

The MCU is succeeding because they structured their story arcs perfectly and each on built off one another.

If the DCEU was built on the Nolan Universe it could have succeeded better than it actually did, but the problem was Snyder and his approach to the material which alienated a lot of the audience. As long as he was directly involved in the early projects, the DCEU would have likely devolved into what it became. He has his supporters, of course, but if his films were as embraced as Nolan's, fans wouldn't be arguing as they have been for the past half-dozen years.

Nope, dceu was doomed to fail from the start, the bar was set too high after nolan trilogy and they had no clear direction from the start, the first iron man film could have came out 3 years later and mcu would still smash em

Also I think the DCEU being part of the Nolan Trilogy is a bad idea.

The MCU was mostly built off characters people didn't really know or care about, so there were no expectations that led people to get up their own ass like with Superman and Batman. The constant stream of action and self-deprecating humor that makes you know you're watching a dumb blockbuster, along with not really alienating anyone made it guaranteed that Disney would make all the money.

No. The MCU succeeded because they consistently made and continue to make films that are almost universally liked. The DCEU was more lucky that the MCU came first and helped build up the excitement for comic book movies.

Yes, potentially. Imagine if DC was doing this at the time Marvel was only starting to build their cinematic universe. I'm sure they'd be somewhat equal since DC wouldn't be trying too hard to compete against an actual established universe, and Marvel wasn't that popular before Avengers 1 either. It would've been a healthy competition which could've gone either way.

Regardless, the thing about DCEU coming after MCU wasn't due to luck. DCEU exists because WB saw how much money these connected universe superhero movies were making. Hence why the rushed team-up and stuffs, which is it's very own downfall.

TL;DR

No, it wasn't luck.

If anything the DCEU would have been a much harder sell if not for the fact that the MCU is so popular.

Nah. Just because it was first doesn’t automatically mean it would have been as good as it is. There was/is a lot of people that’ve worked hard to get the MCU to be the brand that it is today, with crossover appeal to both the casuals and legit readers.

The WB/DC can’t replicate the magic of the MCU because they simply don’t have the same people working behind the curtains to make it happen. That said, Warners has found something with focusing on solo/singular stories and it’s working pretty good for them at the moment.

Tough question to answer. The DCEU is a direct response to the MCU, so it's hard to imagine even what it would look like if it came first. Also, many people criticize DC for not doing things like MCU, if DC came first, would the opposite be true? Would Marvel even have the same formula? Too many variables to answer.

@DammeFavour:

I wouldn't blame it on the comparisons, I would say it had to do with MoS not being a strong enough start to the universe and the "failure" of BvS. Had BvS been a great film, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Hype for that movie was off the charts and they broke records at the box office the first weekend.

Marvel Studios did a good job in expanding their universe. It was a major buildup. But DCEU was a rush hour. Didn't take the time and effort to build the universe. Now, XCU (X-Men Cinematic Universe) is alright. It does have enough buildup, but the problem is the continuity errors. Didn't bother to check and connect the dots.

Out of these cinematic universes, MCU tops the best.

Dc just needs to focus on what they should do. People were in awe with many of dc movies like the dark knight etc, people loved many dc animated movies. Dc animated series had overhwhelming positivity and people loved it.

What im trying to say the characters are very popular and loved by the people. So its not like if dc came first it would do better, its about how good they do. If they do good movies and build a universe that is worthy to the characters then people will respect them. Atleast they are smart enough to focus right now on building a base. Aquaman was good, shazam was good. They can make few decent movies and then focus on making big things happen.

No - the MCU is great because it has great movies, and the overall universe has a great structure: building up the individual heroes in each phase, culminating in team-ups. 6 movies in phase 1, 6 in phase 2 and 10 in phase 3 leading to a conclusion to this era. They had a plan going in, and executed it by putting the films and characters first, and the overarching plot second. DC tried to play catchup and it just didn't work. They have had a couple good movies though with Wonder Woman and Aquaman (and I hear Shazam is pretty good though I haven't got round to seeing it yet), so they could be turning a corner.

Though I would say that maybe the DCEU wouldn't have been trying so hard to play catchup if it came first, so maybe they would have made better movies. But if they came out with the same movies (MoS, BvS, SS, JL) before the MCU then it probably would have crashed even harder, as general audiences would have had less faith that something on that scale could actually work if they hadn't been exposed to the MCU first.

The MCU is more successful not because it came first, but because it is better - and the MCU coming first meant people gave the DCEU more chances than they otherwise would have. I think DC needs to slow down and continue building characters and franchises that work. Maybe they have team-up films, maybe they don't. I do think it's in the best interests of everyone to have both of these universes thriving and doing well though, so I do hope that the DCEU can continue to improve (even if I'll probably always prefer the MCU personally).

No, the MCU is successful because it has well written characters with character arcs that last over numerous movies but also miniature arcs which feel complete after a single outing due to the many complex smaller arcs the characters have, followed by good action scenes and incredible attention to continuity as well as subtle foreshadowing and credits scene that build tension and suspense for the future movies.

The Dark Knight should have been connected to the DCEU but small minded people think in small minded ways. Green Lantern shoudl have also been linked and if it had flopped could have still played a Role like Hulk does I.E around but not his own movie. OR even better yet. Do the Emerald Twilight Storyline to combat Disney Guardian and Star Wars I.P.

They could have done a lot of things but they chose to do a fresh start AFTER Avengers so everything after that was held up to Avengers status.

No, not at all. I think that even if there were a DCEU around at the time (and a critically well recieved DCEU at that) the MCU still would've been successful. They succeed because people like them, that's really all there is to it.
