Poll Do you believe in split durability? (38 votes)

Yes 58%
No 16%
I couldn't care less 5%
Just want to see the result 5%
Debating fictional character is for nerds 16%

Say you have a character who is durable enough to completely no-sell big bang explosions but also has no piercing related feats whatsoever...

If a guy with an ordinary a sword tries to stab/cut this character, what happens?

Is it fair to ask for piercing feats from said character or does it become unreasonable to assume he would need them after a certain point?

Piercing durability and attack is used on this site a lot.

But yeah, I do believe it's a thing

What do you mean “believe“ ? it being a thing in general(outside of anime) or regarding anime?

also , you have to specify which series and you have to watch/read it to know. “Believing or not believing“ doesnt make sense here , its not something to believe in.

It's definitely a thing, but I don't think we should assume characters have it unless specifically shown.

You just have to use common sense. Some characters can take building level attacks but are still vulnerable to bullets. But like if a character tanks a black hole, yeah it's safe to say bullets won't hurt them.

If it's stated or clear then yes. If not then it could just be PIS or low showing.

Assume piercing dura scales to blunt/energy until otherwise shown.

Wonder Woman pretty much proves split durability is a thing

So where does that split begins? With a bullet? A knife? A fork? A sheet?

I think that characters only need piercing durability feats, if there is reason to believe that they may lack it. Like, if a character constantly fights enemies with swords, and bothers to dodge or block, that indicates a likely vulnerability, even if they survive mountains falling on them otherwise.

Conversely, if a character is shown to be invulnerable, but is never stabbed, it can be reasonably assumed that they can take that too.

Not in general. Split durability is only a thing to those who are shown to have it.

It makes sense up to a certain degree, but at some point it starts becoming ridiculous.

In a general sense it is indeed a thing, not just in fiction but in real life too. Some materials like glass are very hard to cut and hard to melt/burn but very easy to shatter. Every material has various properties like compressive strength, tensile strength, toughness, hardness, specific heat etc. You can't slap a single number to a material to predict how it will respond to various vastly different conditions like compressive pressure and heat etc.

But in a case like that in the OP it is not relevant because such and extreme type of attack would be incomparably superior to a knife stab in every conceivable way including pressure. If for example a character is shown to tank a planet busting punch but gets hurt by a normal knife stab it would simply be a high end vs low end.
