Did Zaheer and Kuvira deserve the death penalty?

I've always felt the death penalty was a cope out.

Let them root in prison if their crime was that severe

Zaheer threw the Earth Kingdom into chaos with the death of its queen and Kuvira tried to nuke innocents because she felt entitled to some land. I think there's more than a good argument for both.

I'm opposed to the death penalty in general, so I would say no. Both of them did things that they believed to be right

Zaheer killed the queen sure, but let’s not act like the queen was a good person herself. Using the Dai Li to imprison and practically enslave airbenders into joining her army, even those as young as age 12. Kidnapping rare animals of the air nation for slaughtering. Don’t forget she too tried to capture Korra like Zaheer did. Zaheer tried to kill Korra and killed the Queen, but he was trying to do something he believed was right, and he atleast showed sympathy and cared about his friends and girlfriend who sacrificed their lives for what he believed in.

Kuvira tried blowing up a city and killing her fiance and the krew because of her entitlement to power, sure. But she was also responding to a chaotic desperate situation and did what she felt was right. She obviously took it way too far but we actually see Kuvira accept her actions and try to better herself and make up for it after.

Death penalty should not be a thing, no. They don't.
