Did T'Challa rely too much on Shuri?
No but the MCU used her too much for forced childish humour
Could've done with seeing more of killmonger and T'challa or even Okoye than having Shuri feature so heavily
I loved Shuri, but I could of lived with out the break down on how the Black Panther suit worked. I felt the same way about Spider-Man Home Coming, and his "Tec-Suit".....
She's way more useful than T'challa without the herb and suit he's a sub par fighter who gives a lot of inner monologues
@marvelanddcfan24: Sub Par?! He destroyed M'Baku and her help technology also aided the villain ...saying he's subpar without the herb is like saying Captain America is sub-par without the SSS.
@amonfire1776: suitless, herbless T'challa is not impressive especially when gauged with other regular "humans" DCEU Batman, CW Arrow, hell even Hawkeye would take a majority against him the best parts about him are the herb and his sister's tech...
No. It's like some have said, she plays the part of Q to T'Challa's James Bond. She provides the gear, he's the guy who uses it.
I was looking for a genius panther like in the comics but he showed none. Still a good movie but I was a little surprised by that
What a ridiculous idea. First of all you will have to define the idea of "relies too much".
In the real world the specialist is always the primary consultant. Not that others can't fill the role in their absence but as long as the best resource is available and willing to work you defer to them. T'Challa is a really smart guy but Shuri is Wakanda's top scientist. T'Challa already has his hands full with the duties of being the country's protector as the Panther and after his father's death he now has the duty to be the king within and the face of Wakanda as a politician to the rest of the world. Add to that his potential upcoming duties as an Avenger and you'll begin to wonder how there is enough time during the day.
So what exactly is too reliant?
As much as Tony relies on his tech and money...no. This is a double standard. T’Challa’s a king, he pretty much had all of the resources of Wakanda at his disposal (and it’d be stupid not to).
Tony made his tech himself though, unlike T'Challa
T'Challa said he designed his first suit. He didn't make the new suit but he did design some of his tech at least
No. However, I do wish that they showed T'Challa's intellect in the film. He is supposed to rival that of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. It seemed that they just gave it all to Shuri.
No, she didn't do anything different than Lucius did for Bruce in TDK
- Yep MCU Black Panther fell into the same problem Nolans Batman got caught in. A problem i call the Luscious Fox syndrome. BP hasnt shown himself to be anywhere near as smart as he is in the comics, he comes off as a very wise man but i,m not getting any hints at him possessing any kind of Genius intellect..I mean his fighting skills and demeanor are on point but his intellect has yet to resemble the Black Panther from the comics.
- So to answer the OP...He without a doubt relied way too much on Shuri. Buts its a movie adaption and i really liked Shuris character but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't a little disappointed that BPs genius intellect wasn't shown or utilized in any kind of way.
There is a difference between not needing help and just choosing not to get any help that is useful simply because you have stupid king syndrome that insists on doing everything yourself. IE: Not delegating.
Shuri is super useful, super smart and she has every reason to be being used as a huge asset. She deserves it. Sure, he might be super smart (we haven't seen yet), but he has a lot of other things he was doing, and he didn't need to be doing them; and accepting her help along the way payed dividends.
You don't need to be the one who says every last word or does every last deed, even if you perhaps could. And besides, that kind of stupid writing gets dull very fast.
That's like saying Tony relies on his AI too much.
All she did was give him the gear, the rest is all him
@thebeardofzues: no it's not, it would be similar to saying Cap relies on his shield
Tony made the AI, T'challa and cap didn't make their own gear
@royal_warrior: True I guess.
but Tony's AI helps him with stuff he wouldn't recognize on his own, much like Shuri does.
So it's more like a mix of both.

kinda this. But I liked her and Lucius. It would be nice to see the geniuses by geniuses though.
@jumpstart55: He designed his original suit.
@jumpstart55: He designed his original suit.
So? He has a crap load of Vibrnauim at his disposal. There was nothing all that impressive about his suit from Civil War, it was what i expected. Now that suit Shuri designed was really impressive, it was almost like a throwback aesthetic to the liquid metal from T2.
@jumpstart55: Not really all she did was add the ability to discharge kinetic energy
To be honest, I prefer characters like T'Challa and Bruce Wayne to need someone else to produce their best gear.
Basically, specialists should always be superior at what they specialize in than a generalist is. One of my biggest gripes with Batman is that he's a generalist who manages to be a peer alongside a rainbow of specialists in their specialized fields. It makes him less relatable and more of a Mary Sue.
T'Challa is smart enough to design his own suit, but he's not a specialized scientist. He is a warrior and a politician who has a wide skill set. If he were also a technological peer of Tony Stark he'd break into the "he's just good at everything" mold that hurts my interest in characters.
So I am fine with T'Challa relying on his genius sister for his gear. He is still an intelligent, charismatic man who is an incredible warrior. Maybe he can't create a liquid metal vibranium nanobot suit that can fit inside a necklace and discharges stored kinetic energy as a shockwave, but that doesn't make him any less effective at using it in the field. Shuri could never do Black Panther's job, so there's no reason T'Challa needs to be able to do her job as well as she can.
This is actually better than T'Challa doing everything himself, like in the comics. That way, he won't feel like a Gary Sue. He's a king for f*ck's sake. He obviously has less time than Tony Stark and more responsibilities to tinker around with tech toys.
