Y'Mera Xebella Challa, more commonly referred to as Mera, is the daughter of King Nereus and a Xebellian princess raised by Atlanna. She is an ally/love interest of Arthur Curry (AKA Aquaman), prince and later king of Atlantis.
Mera was taken in by Queen Atlanna while her parents fought in the wars of Xebel, training her as the Queen's protégée. Over time, Mera became a prominent military figure in Atlantis, leading the Atlantean Guard later in life.
In both Justice League (2018) and Aquaman (2019), Mera is portrayed by actress Amber Heard.

Mera rips off the back of Murk's helmet with one hand, while being choked:
The suits belonging to the Men-of-War (or Elite Atlantean Guards) are very durable and made from Atlantean metal, which is significantly more powerful than regular metal. This is even more impressive considering Murk totally owned Aquaman in an earlier fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw5fq3QiwpI (0:48-1:26).
Mera is strong enough to briefly grapple with a Trench creature, dodge a swipe that shattered wood (also a nice reaction feat), and then kick it a few feet back and impaling it on some spears:
***Note: Aquaman was struggling with just one Trench creature in H2H***
Mera tosses a spear with enough force that it impales a Trench creature, sends it flying dozens of feat across and off the boat, and impales a second Trench creature clean through:
Mera, like other Atlanteans, is capable of casually withstanding the immense pressures and temperatures of the ocean. However, it is hard to determine the exact pressures and temperatures that Atlanteans can withstand. We can make estimates though as Atlantis is suggested to be deep down on the ocean floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
The deep parts of the Atlantic Ocean often reach temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius. To make a comparison, any water temperature below 60F (or 15C) is considered very dangerous to humans. Anything lower than that is immediately life-threatening. Here is a short guide about how dangerous varying water temperatures can be.
At 7500 meters below sea level (which isn't even the maximum depth of the Atlantic Ocean), the psi is over 10 000. That is 10 000 pounds of pressure per square inch. For comparison, a human femur (the strongest bone in the body) will receive a clean break with 1700 psi.
Mera, and other Atlanteans, are regularly and casually swimming under the immense pressures and cold temperatures of the ocean without experiencing any harmful effects.
Mera takes an underwater tackle from Steppenwolf and gets slammed into the wall by the throat, breaking the stone:
***Note: Steppenwolf was also owning Aquaman in underwater combat and his strength is superior to Wonder Woman's***
Mera is knocked out by Steppenwolf for roughly 45 seconds and recovers with only minor and superficial injuries:
Without hesitation, Mera jumps out of a plane flying thousands of feet into the air:
She lands and tumbles without receiving any injuries:
From just a few feet away, Mera is hit by an explosion (and the concrete debris) as a result of Black Manta's optic blast, and gets sent flying several feet away:
A direct blast from Black Manta was able send Aquaman flying dozens of feet away and through several concrete structures. The blast and subsequent impacts caused Aquaman visible pain/injury as well as a burn on his arm:
Another blast from Black Manta completely decimated a bell tower:
A small explosion right beneath Mera sends her flying into the air and crashing down through the roof of a building. She then gets lifted and choked by Murk but fights him off:
Survives the wormhole/portal, which Mera believed would tear them apart:
She was knocked out but saved by Queen Atlanna. Afterwards, she was in some pain, had some trouble walking and was holding her ribs, but she was otherwise fine:
In water, Mera is at least as fast as Aquaman, having been shown to swim alongside him multiples times throughout the movie. For example, when swimming away from the Trench creatures, where they should/would be swimming at their top speeds:
Mera, like Aquaman and other Atlanteans, can create audible and visible sonic booms upon launch underwater. This suggests that they are swimming at speeds exceeding the speed of sound. Here is an example of what the sonic boom looks like:
Here is a cool 6-minute video going into the math/physics of DCEU Aquaman's speed, which is scalable to Mera. Note that this video came out BEFORE the solo Aquaman movie and is only based off the Justice League movie.
Other than simply being able to swim fast, Mera is also incredibly agile and skilled in underwater combat:
Mera's speed, agility, and fighting skill translate just as well outside of water:
Mera is unarmed and surrounded by 3 Elite Atlantean Guards equipped with plasma rifles and swords. With an impressive display of acrobatics and fighting skill, she takes them all out without getting tagged once. Notice how she cracks the concrete floor with the impact of her attack when she tosses the last guard. Mera is also clearly skilled with swords!
Her weapon is shot out of her hand by Murk, and she proceeds to run away, avoiding his shots:
What follows is an extended chase sequence on the rooftops, in which Mera runs away from multiple Elite Atlantean Guards with jetpacks and as they are firing at her. This is impressive because:
- She has her back turned towards her pursuers the whole time
- She is running and navigating across rooftops
- Her pursuers have jetpacks and plasma rifles
- She isn't tagged once (until the end when Murk gets her with an explosive shot)
The following two feats are from Justice League.
Mera disperses the water in a large area, removing all the water and causing Steppenwolf to fall down against a pillar. She then collapses the water on top of him, which sends him spiralling around from the pressure.
After the fight, she disperses the water again to create a bubble of air for her and Aquaman to talk:
Now on to Mera's feats from the Aquaman film.
A massive tsunami sent by Orm (AKA Ocean Master) threatens to kill Arthur's dad. Mera arrives and clears out the water in the area:
This is easily Mera's most powerful display of hydrokinesis, and the effort it takes her is a testament to that. Being able to push against the force of a tsunami and clear out the water in one large area is quite impressive.
Mera then saves Arthur's dad by removing the water from inside his body, since the tsunami had already drowned him. She essentially resuscitates him:
Mera uses a similar move she used against Steppenwolf to attack Orm and save Arthur during their duel to the death:
She hits him with a blast of water, drags him to the center of the arena, and disperses the water, causing Orm to fall several hundreds of feet onto the center platform. He is injured from this attack and throws up water, showing just how much water went into his system. Mera then drops the water on top of him. Although this is quite impressive, note that Orm was distracted and taken by surprise.
Mera draws the sweat and moisture from Arthur's face and creates a droplet of water to power up the ancient Atlantean machine:
Mera creates marine animal constructs and makes them jump and dance around in a fountain in order to entertain a young girl:
Mera can also manipulate wine! She uses the wine from many wine bottles to create hardwater spikes and pierce the Elite Atlantean Guards. This is even more impressive when you consider that Atlantean armour is much stronger and more durable than regular metal.
The impact of the spikes is strong enough to send the guards flying through the windows and dozens of feet away.
Mera catches a Trench creature with water as it is mid-leap and tosses it far away into the ocean:
Mera creates a massive shockwave of water that temporarily pushes the Trench creatures away:
While standing on a killer whale, Mera creates two long tendrils of water to catch an enemy ship that was moving away from her and crash it into the ships next to it:
Mera uses two tendrils of water to grab the weapons of King Nereus' guards and toss them away:
Last but not least, we have Mera using water tendrils to take out 4 Atlantean Guards watching over Vulko:
In an alternate/deleted scene from Justice League, the brief battle between Steppenwolf and Mera goes a bit differently.
As Steppenwolf tackles Mera into the wall, Mera manipulates the water around his head to create an air bubble and proceeds to drain the water from his body, stunning him for a few seconds. Steppenwolf then tosses Mera into the ground, and she remains conscious.
This is different from the scene shown in the film in that Mera is immediately tossed after Steppenwolf tackles her into the wall and she is knocked out while Aquaman and Steppenwolf battle.
It is not known if director Zack Snyder intended for this scene to be included in his version of the final film. However, the cut between Mera being tackled and tossed suggests that this extended battle sequence was intended to be in the film's final product.
