In my opinion Dc has a few great villains but Marvel has a greater amount of awesome ones. Just my opinion though and I realize it is completely subjective.

I don't think we can say this particular villain stands supreme to the other. Like so many things, it's a matter of time, place, and setting... The heroes sort of define the villains and the villains sort of define the heroes...

I prefer the Marvel Universe over the DC big time... HOWEVER, my favorite villain, bar none, is The Joker.... (and I even hate clowns.)

The Joker is a criminal, criminally insane, without remorse, and is truly sinister... He's completely dark and twisted and he knows it...

Marvel has great villains, (Dr. Doom, Doctor Octopus, Tony Stark, ) although they never really see themselves as evil. It seems to me, that in the Marvel Universe, the bad guys, in their own ways, see themselves as righteous. (I'm referring to the big time bad guys)

  • Galactus doesn't see himself as evil, but rather a necessary part of the universe
  • Dr. Doom sees himself as a righteous man trying to bring peace to the world... Even the "panther god" saw him as righteous
  • Doc. Ock is an arrogant bastard whose a little insane
  • King Pin - it's just business to him. He knows he's a criminal but I don't think that he thinks of himself as the bad guy...

So, if I had to pick one bad guy.. JUST one... The Joker...

But if I had to pick the most evil bad guy? Tony Stark... Just my opinion...

I always thought marvel had the better bad guys. I liked that their villains really often just had a different perspective and thought of themselves as heroes. Like Namor or Magneto or Galactus (as someone mentioned above.) To me this was important, because i think greed or ambitiousness loses steam without a sense of moral purpose to drive you. But over the last decade or so, they have done so many heel and face turns, that they are kind of ruining some of their key pieces. Usually they are super-superpowered as villains, and lose some of their power as heroes. Magneto? White Queen was an awesome bad guy... just mean. Scarlet Witch good or bad? Sentry good or bad? Jean Gray? And now the heroes are fighting each other just to sell books. Cyclops evil? Iron man, turned him heel (though to a lesser degree...) was a bad idea. They are sacrificing the character (long term value) for story (short term value) sake.

I'll still pick Marvel villains although the gap is closing big time. For one reason I think their biggest villian is lex Luthor, and I think he's an empty character. Randall Savage, Darkseid, Black Adam, & even joker are solid. Joker is the major exception to the moral purpose drive from above, cause he's looney!

For Me, I got into DC for its villains. And while they do have less villains than Marvel does their villains have a greater quality than Marvel. So I think DC has better villains. But Marvel in my opinion has better heroes so overall it is a balance, both are equal but for different reasons.

Those who like both companies equally will most likely say one has great villains and the other has great heroes. I got into comics because of Marvel's heroes and I got into DC comics for its villains.

So I hope this helps ya.

I always felt the exact opposite. I think that DC overall has better heroes (though my favorite hero is pre-OMD Spider-Man). Marvel is the clear winner to me in villains though. Doom & Magneto to me are the two greatest comic book villains by a long shot. Marvel also has Ultron, Loki, Zemo, Galactus, Thanos, and honestly a huge list of villains that I love.

Don't get me wrong, DC has some great villains as well, but their list of villains I look forward to is much shorter then Marvels, and my favorite Marvel villains I like more then my favorite DC villains.

Marvel have better villains. Dr Doom,Venom, Loki, Kingpin, Thanos, Doctor Octopus, Magneto, I could go on and on.

That's not to say DC have none. Joker, Darkseid, Sinestro and Black Adam are all quality antagonists.

@Timandm: What do you mean by Tony Stark being a bad guy? I admit I don't like him much but I wouldn't say he's a villain.

Ahh. That's a fair question... In fact, I'm going to reply to GillaDro as well because I think he was wondering what I meant also...

@GillaDro:

I've lived long enough and studied enough history to understand that the villains don't always (in fact, they hardly ever) LOOK like villains. In fact, the villains often times don't even realize they ARE the villains. Mao Tse Tung started off doing good for the people of China but over time, as the power corrupted him, he became something that makes even Dr. Doom look like a nice person.

So, what makes me think of Tony Stark as a villain? Evil even? During Marvel Civil War he did things that only a dictator with no regard for human rights would do... Consider the following:

1: He had super heroes arrested, taken into custody, and imprisoned in the negative zone without trial. He did this because he knew they would have NO RIGHTS IN THE NEGATIVE ZONE. He KNEW they weren't going to get trials and he KNEW they weren't going to be able to appeal any decisions made. He said to Peter Parker, who was his second in command at the time, that the prisoners in the Negative Zone were outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. and the Courts. He knew he could do anything he wanted to them, and they had no recourse or defense whatsoever. That was the main reason he put them in the negative zone, so that he could do whatever he wanted to them and they would have no legal recourse.

A complete and total lack of regard for human rights and for civil rights. What kind of an evil person could do such a thing? Shall I name a few real life examples? Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler.

2: He COMPLETELY abused his power as the head of SHIELD and had people arrested and detained EVEN when they had broken no laws whatsoever.

Remember when Peter Parker realized he was on the wrong side. He had M.J. and Aunt May leave Stark Towers quietly... This was COMPLETELY legal as they weren't prisoners, nor were they slaves. Then Peter decides to leave and what does Stark do? He attacks Peter and then orders Shield to arrest and detain him. Now, ask yourself this; Exactly what law did Peter Parker break? Exactly what law were the SHIELD agents supposed to arrest him for? Leaving Stark Towers? Peter HAD registered, was harboring no fugitives, and taking no sensitive information with him. Peter Parker had broken exactly ZERO laws.... And Stark says to arrest him? He would have put Spider-Man in the negative zone, but for what??? What kind of a person imprisons people when they've broken no laws?

3: He COMPLETELY violated the rights of Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk).... Only hours after having slept with her (while both were on duty) he took her powers away from her. As far as he knew at the time, the change was PERMANENT. What gave him the right to alter another human being on a molecular level, without their consent? What would have come of She-Hulk if Amadeus Cho hadn't figured out how to restore her power.

Ask yourself this, if a random super hero or villain went about draining the powers of super heroes without the permission of the super heroes, and without the legal authority to do so... Well, what would you consider that person?

In fact, if you read AVENGERS ACADEMY's latest issue, you'll see a villain trying to do exactly that. Now, the person trying to take powers away from all the super heroes is considered an evil villain in this case.... But when Tony Stark does it, no one seems to even blink an eye. I find that odd.

4: He violated the rights of CHILDREN during Civil War. He actually LIED to children and forced them to join his Initiative as if they had no choice... You see, the Registration Act did NOT apply to children. It applied only to those who were legally adults. Yet, Stark had people going out and rouding up children and threatening them with statements like, "The law COULD change..." What the hell did that mean? Well, it meant the law did not apply to those who weren't adults, but Stark just had to manipulate the kids. Cloud Nine never wanted to join the initiative, she was FORCED to. This is, in every way possible, wrong...

Tony Stark became an absolute tyrant... He violated human rights, civil rights, and the rights of children.... He never once apologized as he felt he had done the right thing...

He's far worse than a criminal, he's evil.... I consider him to be worse than Dr. Doom, as Doom admits up front that he is tyrant...

DC has some great villains, but I prefer the motivations of the Marvel ones.

Why is Lex Luthor evil? Because he doesn't like Superman. That's it, right? He may even be a hero like Batman if Superman didn't exist.

Why is Joker evil? Because he's evil, it's just who he is.

Why is Cheetah evil? Because she just is.

Main villains for the DC trinity. Compare that to Magneto's motivations, Galactus' motivations, Loki's motivations, Dr. Doom's laundry list of motivations.
