Could Goku really have defeated Kid Buu if he went all out right away?

So i remember in the eng dub Goku saying something like he could have defeated Kid Buu at full power SSJ3 but he wanted to give Vegeta a turn or something like that. I think there may also be other translations or whatever for this. Anyway do you think he could have defeated Kid Buu if he tried his absolute best when he was still fresh at SSJ3?

He also thought he could rest for a minute and reenergize SSJ3

Goku was confident he could kill Buu if he gathered his ki for a minute with Vegeta covering him (similar to how Goku was distracting Raditz while Piccolo was charging special beam cannon) but he didn't account for how draining SS3 is, so before he could fully charge up he powered down instead.

Whenever Goku could do it or not is not clear, in one way Goku can sense how powerful Buu is and how much it may take to kill him, on the other hand Buu already regenerated from multiple attacks that were meant to finish him off so he may regenerate from full power Goku's attack too.
