For me the two characters that have risen from the ashes are Hulk and Thanos. But lets start with the Hulk. Say what you want about the Hulk and especially his fans(I have debated fiercely with them when it came to Sentry vs Hulk), but if you rewind the year to at least 2010(when I first joined) Hulk was not only hopeless but he was borderline a joke character. I mean my god there were arguments that even the Powerpuff girls can defeat him.

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/the-powerpuff-girls-versus-hulk-535797/

Even when you brought of very good Hulk feats they were ignored in favor of speed. Hulk was not even on the level of Thor or Superman for that matter. He could barely hang in there with Wonder Woman. But then for years Hulk fans united and started putting in rather good arguments for the character and now here we are... The Hulk is probably one of the most respected powerhouses in battle forums. He is not only seen in the same league as Superman but many argue above Superman. Yes, times have changed. I have to give credit where its due. As a Sentry fan if there's any Hulk fans out there I give you guys yall duos. I just wish the Sentry fanbase was like you guys until a certain someone ruined it for us. But... Let me not get off track.

Now for Thanos I feel he was even more if a bigger joke back then. No offense(I hope I don't break any rules with this) but his fanbase back then absolutely sucked back then. Most were trolls and didn't know how to debate. But worse of all people seen Thanos has BARELY above herald level. Again barely. You had people who argue he'd lose to Supergirl!

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/thanos-vs-supergirl-394765/

I'm sorry but no way in hell should this thread have been 25 pages long. Like Hulk many people argued that speed would be Thanos' weakness. Not only that but the main arguments were that Thanos could really win a fight against powerhouses if he had "prep." Heck I remember reading arguments saying he'd struggle with Black Adam. During that time Thanos was not seen as Darkseid's equal but his inferior. However when legendary poster @killemall came through and crushed the building that all changed along with a bunch of SMARTER Thanos fans showing up also. Now Thanos is not only seen as more powerful than Darkseid but.... The most of the most dangerous transcendent character on the battle forums.

Anyways everyone which characters you feel have a risen from the ashes?

@blessedbyhorus: Most users used to put him in battles against mid-tiers, even though over the years he has demonstrated that he's actually on par with High-tiers, consistently.

Very interesting. And I keep hearing that he "beat" Hulk. How true is that? Or is it just trolling the Hulk?

@blessedbyhorus: He did, they were fighting for some time, but eventually, Thing KO'd Hulk, who was being controlled by Puppet Master, and it was also implied that Hulk was amped.

Thing shattered his arm with that punch though.

And, while that is an outlier, it lines up with his recent showings and how writers are writing him as a high-tier.

If me debating Thanos got people to start regarding him highly - that makes me super happy.

Oh hey, the legend is back. Your debating of Thanos kinda inspired me, that and he's also my favorite character.

@blessedbyhorus: You think Hulk vs Powerpuff girls is bad, but we had stuff like this https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/hulk-vs-supermans-severed-head-757273/ Although to be fair some were probably joking and i wonder how much of this has to do with Hulk being lowballed and Superman being a character that is ALWAYS wanked to some degree, probably a bit of both.

Also while there have been many great Hulk debaters like GhostRavage, AcidSkull, thedailybagel, etc... that helped with Hulks overall reputation. Killemall actually contributed to it himself a lot of the times. He knew Thor and Hulk struggling against each others for DECADES was not a fluke or a coincidence despite a lot of people thinking well if Thor wanted to he could just vaporize him, so I actually remember seeing him defend Hulk back in those days.

In the end the arguments that were better ended up changing a lot of peoples minds.

Thanos and Hulk would be the main two since I joined Comicvine. Wolverine as well to a lesser extent.

@blessedbyhorus: Yea IIRC Killemall is a Thor fan but i remember him specifically defend Hulk against many Thor fanboys who thought Thor could just destroy Hulk if he wanted to.

This thread made me think if guys like Hulk and Thanos have risen to fame, what characters have fallen down from their high horses?

The 2 obvious ones that come to mind are Black Adam and Gladiator. BA was seen as a casual team buster back in the day, he was basically Thanos level to a lot of people to now being seen as lower than any of the main high-tiers like Superman, Thor or Hulk. And Gladiator was seen as post crisis Superman/Superman+ level character, but is now seen as basically mid-tier.

You greatly helped with Wolverine now that I think about it especially in my Wolverine vs Deathstroke thread.

Gladiator was never a heavyweight on here even before I joined(2010). Back in 2007 people still did not take the character seriously. As for Black Adam? Oh man.... I remember that character use to get wanked heavy due to WW3 showing. Good times.

@blessedbyhorus: I disagree strongly, back on my original account i used to go around trying to shut down Gladiator wank quite a lot. Which is why you had highly debatable threads like these

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/superman-vs-gladiator-1888/

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/gladiator-vs-thanos-414434/

It got so bad over the years a Superman fan had to make a thread proving that Clark is the REAL Superman

https://comicvine.gamespot.com/forums/battles-7/superman-vs-gladiator-who-s-the-real-superman-1618893/?page=1

and even then if you look at 2 particular users like BlackStarOblivion and TheGrayGhost were strongly in favor of Gladiator and they were both actually Superman fans and respected/knowledgable debaters but were convinced that Gladiators outliers were the standard for the character.

Hell i remember WarlockMage AKA Kidman make a Gladiator blog trying to debunk why Hulk beating Gladiator was PIS until he got shut down by GhostRavage to the point that he had to delete his blog and a couple of years later he gave up on Gladiator entirely and even talks nowadays how he never understood himself why he was so blinded about that character.

So trust me Gladiator wank definitely existed and was well documented. It's only in the last 3-4 years that the character has been viewed as an actual joke and a "mid-tier" go back to time before that and not even those that disliked the character thought he was Colossus level or something.

There are many, many, many characters that have fallen to the egos and prideful twats on the Battle Forums, even when they actually beat their opponent. There are also a lot that have been used, beaten, and never risen again. A few good examples are Thing, Human Torch (both), Rhino, Kitty Pryde, all the members of Alpha Flight (except Wolverine), and even Squirrel Girl.

Never knew that. Checking out all those threads. I remember @vance_astro being on the front lines against the Gladiator wanking lol.

Mysterio and Taskmaster I'd say. There are a lot more that have fallen than risen though.

Killemall was the one who gave Gladiator the momentum. And it was there until he left, but then Hulk/Superman fanboys that felt threatened by him developed a tandem to focus on lower showings to diminish him. I guess it worked if he's seen a mid-tier now.

I think characters have fallen more than risen nowadays. Hulk and Thanos rising is great, I used to think they were weaker in the back of my head until I joined the vine like 5 years back, and saw the discussions being had about them.

Thing for sure, that guy was so underrated years ago. Hopefully the rest of the Fantastic Four get more recognition.
