From a scientific standpoint Wolverine can't cut through anything he doesn't have the strength to inflict the force through himself.
Luckily his claws are pinpoint sharp so he'll produce a microsized area in respect to the force he is inflicting.
But contrary to belief, the hardness of his claws are literally only a part of the equation.
I've seen this argument several times, and I havnt read Wolverine in a while, so perhaps someone can enlighten me. Where did this argument originate from? I remember old Wolverine comics sayin that his claws were honed so keen that they could cut through anything. I always assumed that everything was "cutable" to logan other than other adamantium, vibranium and possibly force fields.
I mean, from a scientific standpoint, if you want to go there, his strength could be a moot point if his claws were sharp enough? I thought that this idea was always the point to begin with.
@doombert: My post was meant to put comic book logic aside and go off of a scientific standpoint. IIRC, people have clashed with is claws before with swords a few times. I don't think the sword would last that long if they continued to clash at one another, but this would disprove the "if his claws were just sharp enough."
But lets say if his claws are "sharp" enough, the problem would be that they are triangular shaped. Therefore if he swing deep into metal, the base part of the triangle would cause enough drag for Wolverine to lose moment to the point where he would no longer have the acceleration to overcome the material that wedges in between the base of the triangle in his claws.
How about those times he has fallen from very high buildings and clawed into metal panels to stop his fall? Why didn't he continuously just cut through the whole building? How has he climbed buildings in the past by sticking his claws into the walls? Etc.
This is putting comic book logic aside, obviously with comics, his claws will cut what the writer needs him to cut. If an author needs him to gut silver surfer, then he will. If an author needs for him to fall off a high rise building, slam his claws into concrete and catch his 300 lbs of weight falling at 60 mph, then he'll stop.
He might stop at Darkseid. He only gave Thor scratches while he was bloodlusted do he can probably only give superman small scratches too. And I'm not sure he could cut Darkseid at all.
Stops at green scar but he could cut superman and darkseid. It was PIS how wolverine could even scratch hulk in WWH xmen. Hulks skin is tough as it is, but since his durability also increases with his anger, at green scar lev, adamantium shouldnt even be able to scratch him.
@comicdude360: the point is his skin durability is always inconsistent. One minute a set of adamantium jaws cant puncter his neck, the next adamantium bullets go right through him.
Secondary Adamantium - It is less durable than True Adamantium, so yes.
Iron Man's Armor - Happened already. One instance required Black Panther disabling Iron Man's force field with his energy daggers, allowing Wolverine to do this.
Nth Metal Armor - I don't recall Nth Metal being indestructible, so I think Wolverine could slice through that.
She Hulk skin - It's the same as Hulk's skin, and Wolverine has cut through that many times.
The Thing's skin - Wolverine gashed his face, disfiguring it for a while. He also stabbed Thing in shoulder during the Enemy of the State arc.
Colossus skin - Debatable. I only remember one instance of adamantium penetrating his skin, and that was when S'ym (who previously broke one of Wolverine's adamantium claws with no effort) threw it at Colossus and it penetrated his skin. Whether or not Wolverine could do it is a different matter.
Edit: Based on the evidence provided, Wolverine can, in fact, cut Colossus's skin.
Green Scar's skin - It's still the Hulk, so it wouldn't be any different.
Superman skin - I doubt it. Wolverine would have to be strong enough penetrate Superman's skin with his claws.
Then again, Wolverine did manage to stab Thanos in the chest.... So, it is open to debate.
He cut Thanos,Gladiator,Thor all of whom have greater durability than Superman,so once again no to your no.
I'll leave that one alone, too many jimmies will be rustled.
Okay.
So Adamantium can't cut people like Hulk (even atom splitting swords can barely do it) but for some reason Wolverine can. Got it.
If you think I'm rustled, I am not.
Wolverine always cut Hulk.
If you're talking about other instances be sure that it was primary adamantium, since a-lot of people use secondary adamantium and just say it's adamantium.
Not always, but it's true he can cut through Green Scar seeing as he already did and Green Scar was pretty susceptible to getting cut/pierced.

I'm not sure of the context for this image, and I know Wolvie wasn't in his right mind (just not sure if he was actually amped or not), but I've seen this scan floating around here before.
As stated above, Wolverine has cut through Thanos who has more durability then anyone here, which means there is nobody on this list he can't cut through. Whether skin deep or all the way.
Last I checked, Colossus is supposed to bleed energy. But, that was many years ago.
But, it looks canon, based on the the file name (Wolverine #4, page 16).
Oh, yeah, it's from Aaron's run. I own and have read it! Lol. Been awhile, so I guess I didn't recognize it at first.
So this wasn't even actually Logan. It was a demon that took control of his body on Earth while Logan was visiting Hell. But since it is his body, I would imagine the adamantium piercing Peter's skin would apply regardless of who was controlling Wolvie.

Well, then. Wolverine can definitely cut through Colossus.
