I’m so upset :(
This doesn’t seem to indicate that Spider-Man can’t appear in any Avengers movies though, so arguably he could still pop up in the grand scheme of the MCU.
Also Sony keeping Watts, Holland and confirming they’ll go off of the template set by Homecoming and Far From Home does seem to hint that they’ll still follow that continuity and tone.
EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige won’t produce any further Spider-Man films because of an inability by Disney and Sony Pictures to reach new terms that would have given the former a co-financing stake going forward. A dispute that has taken place over the past few months at the top of Disney and Sony has essentially nixed Feige, and the future involvement of Marvel from the Spider-Man universe, sources said.
There is a lot of webbing here, but it all comes down to money, and it’s easy to understand why both sides refused to give ground. Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat, and I don’t believe they even came back to the table to figure out a compromise. Led by Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra, Sony just simply didn’t want to share its biggest franchise. Sony proposed keeping the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney refused.
So it seems like it was Disney who wanted more and ended the deal.
Disney has had it rough the past few weeks:
1. Opening of Star wars theme park falling flat.
2. Mulan film being openly boycotted due to Actress retweeting Chinese propaganda (may have been under duress).
3. SEC may be investigating claims of financial book cooking
So it sounds like Sony feels like Disney was able to resuscitate the Spider man franchise and is now taking it back 100% without any involvement from and sharing of profits with Disney. Dont know if I have faith that they can keep up what Disney essentially built for them. But on the bright side, they can bring Venom into the fold now.
Guys there's still another 2 movies with Holland and Watts but Feige won't be involved anymore, neither will the rest of the MCU be.
How can Holland be in the MCU if there is no deal with Sony? Holland's version of the character is tied to the MCU. I can't see how any sequels work without it
