Black Panther came close to The Dark Knight’s 8 nominations, but ultimately got 7.

It did get one nomination TDK did not though—Best Picture. Just want to take this moment to laugh at all the people who were talking shit about me because I thought BP would be nominated for Best Picture, but I was correct. Feels good.

Black Panther’s nominations:

-Best Picture

-Best Costume Design

-Best Production Design

-Best Original Score

-Best Original Song — “All the Stars”

-Best Sound Editing

-Best Sound Mixing

I for one, am happy to see it nominated. Now I will exit this thread before all the "it doesn't deserve it" takes come in.

Wow, really? Best Picture?

That's when you know the SJW disease is truly infecting the Academy.

@cosmicmuffin: TDK was released at a time when it was only possible to nominate a max of 5 films for Best Picture, whereas nowadays there can be 10. TDK is credited as the film which pushed the Academy to increase the slots from 5 to 10 so the comparison is not valid.

@frozen: Considering TDK was running against Slumdog Millionaire (eventual and laughable winner), Milk, the Curious case of Ben. Button, Frost/Nixon and the Reader, its snub is immense. Virtually none of those films is comparable in quality. There were years were choosing it would have been challenging, but that year? It was purely on bias. I doubt Ledger would have won Supporting Actor if not for his demise, either.

Also, hardly a big surprise. It had a good shot since it was already nominated for Best Picture in drama category in the Golden Globes. No idea why BP deserves that honor but IW does not, though.

That’s bullsh*t. I liked Black Panther but no way in hell in should get a Best Picture nomination, especially when you see the list of CBM movies not being nominated (Even IW blows BP out of the water in quality)

They’re definitely doing this just cause of Social Justice, no other way.

But hey congrats for it still.

Its dramaturgy wasn't even all that spectacular (it was good though). It's just Mickey pushing the right buttons in the right times.

XD, seeing the salt is hilarious. Also BP is a lot better than some of the best picture nominee in the past, so personally okay with it. Hopefully these set a precedent where being a CBM is not a disadvantage in the Oscar.

It’s still being overrated it seems. It was a good super hero movie, that’s it.

Ha! No complaints. I loved Black Panther. Other than Best Picture, I think it has a solid shot at all of those categories (though All the Stars is an overrated song).

Yeah the bias against superhero movies was much stronger then, and I think it's telling that none of the films nominated in 2008 have really been remembered the way TDK has in the 10 years since. With BP's cultural relevance I can understand why it was nominated, though in all honesty I think Infinity War was the superior film.

@frozen: I would have been OK if TDK had not been nominated just a year earlier (with No Country for Old Men, There Will be Blood or even Michael Clayton and Atonement) but 2008 was simply not a year where its exclusion was justifiable. Sneaking in the Reader to avoid nominating TDK is rather low.

They got the nomination.

That money was well spent.

(I have to find a good ref linking money spent on lobbying and chances to get a nomination).

Anyways, good for the movie, and good for Ryan Coogler

Super overrated by critics and very good by fans.

I'm cool with Mixing, Editing and Costumes and I really want it to win Score but not the Picture.

Can't say I'm surprised, personally I don't think it should be but if this means more recognition for CBMs, why not I guess?

Whar about its competitors though? I'm at work, so kind of difficult to check.

Infinity War deserves Visual Effects and Spider-Verse deserves Animated Feature, that's for sure.

Black Panther shouldn't be awarded with Best Picture IMO. Production Design and Sound Editing seem more meriting.

@morpheus_: Pretty sure everyone knows why BP got nominated. Personally I don't know if IW should be nominated as well but yeah, if if they had to choose one, that would have been a better pick.

Also I am just hoping Spiderman into the spiderverse win best animated movie.

But good for BP, it was a great movie. Is not like any of the other nominee are amazing either, its all opinion, and studio throwing money, politics, trying to get ratings etc.

This especially.

Isle of Dogs is the only real competition. Incredibles 2 SHOULD NOT win.

Not to get off topic, but honestly the only one that I would really be upset if it wins is Ralph break the internet since that felt like a commercial. Isle of Dog I personally did not enjoy as much as most people, but if that won I could understand why. Mirai I enjoy and would not mind if it won. Also I know people like to give crap to Incredible 2, but I cannot help but admired the animation in that movie along with lots of really fun and wonderful directed scenes. But Spiderman into the Spiderverse is easily the better movie in both a story telling perspective, and from a visual and technical aspect.

The only reason I be upset if Incredible 2 wins is because it just further shows that the Oscar people only vote for Disney and Pixar because they are more popular, the have the more money to give out and campaign and animation is not taken as seriously. I mean last year Silent Voice and In this corner of the world were not nominated yet Ferdinand and The Boss Baby was. Big Hero 6 mainly won because most people seen that movie as opposed to the other movies which is a shame. Its a shame that animated movies are not taken as serious and if Incredible 2 wins, I will just not help but feel is because its Pixar rather than them thinking is the best animated movie.

I hate to be part of the salt crowd, but let's just be honest with ourselves here; deep down, we all know The Academy nominated it 100% for the attention, especially since they're still reeling from the idiotic #OscarsSoWhite thing from a few years ago.

Honestly, I kind of feel bad for The Academy, they can never get a break.

The radical right seems them as a liberal propaganda machine that exists only to hurt Trump's reelection campaign, and the radical left seems them as a group of misogynistic, homophobic, white supremacists that exists only to stop women and black people from directing/starring in major movies. So I guess I shouldn't judge them for trying to get positive attention.

Black Panther was nominated but not Infinity War? Well this definitely doesn't have something to do with the racial subject matter in Black Panther.
