It may utilize the mix of action and humor that now defines the Marvel movie formula, but Black Panther refuses to blend into the crowd of superhero films. It stands out boldly, in part by opening up a beautiful new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also with its topical themes. Not everything works across the board, but when it sets this fantastic cast of relatable heroes on one side of real-world ideological debates and the MCU’s most compelling and dimensional antagonist in years on the other, a huge amount of it works wonderfully.

If T’Challa is about maintaining traditions and keeping Wakanda’s advanced technology and Vibranium safely hidden from the outside world, then Killmonger is driven by a deep-set need to right wrongs and exact justice – which are usually the motives associated with the superhero, not the supervillain. And that’s what makes him so compelling and, ultimately, such a deeply moving character. The best villains are said to be the ones the audience can sympathize with, and Killmonger certainly fits that bill. He is the strongest villain (figuratively speaking) the MCU has produced since Loki.

Just throwing this out there, since I think it's worth noting.

What do you think ??

Been said for plenty of movies.

Probably exaggeration.

Not surprised.

The establishment of the basic character traits and origin of T'Challa in Civil War leaves plenty of room for the other cast members and the world building in Black Panther to develop and shine properly.

It was the same case in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

@the_magister: Those guys had several episodes to be established as characters. Killmonger had two hours to be established as a character.

Still an impressive feat from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

Kingpin? No. But I was one of the ones that found the latter to be rather flat and uninteresting. I would have said Kingpin and Purple Man.

Being equal or inferior to Loki as a character isn't something worth boasting about. It's not like Loki is better than every other mcu baddies that coming out after him. Both Fisk and Killgrave are far superior.

Interesting. I wonder how will these critics hype up Thanos now to Kingdom Come when Killmonger is the best villain in the MCU because the audience can sympathize with him.

So much of the MCU reviews are hyperbole.

Wasn't "Hela the best villain since Loki?" Or Vulture?

And it seems like every new instalment is the "best one yet!"

Ugh. I used to have to criticize the SJWs all of the time almost exclusively for race baiting. But anymore, I keep seeing you on these forums, or people like you - who are actually the ones dragging race baiting into this. This has been spoken of by many other people about the other villains recently from Marvel, like Hela, vulture, etc. Even Nemo, "he actually won". Were they all having race motives too, fearing they will be labeled a bigot if they said otherwise?

Follow the rules of Hanlon's Razor and also Occam's Razor in this case. We have adequate reasons in both cases for this stupidity to assume anything else. IE: Hyperbole of reviews.

I don't know, in my eyes, it would be hard to top Michael Keaton's flawless performance as the Vulture. But I'll keep an open mind, Michael B. Jordan is a great actor.

Yeah this is nonsense. Just because you get defensive doesn't mean he's wrong.

This film is marketed on race. They've been race baiting the film, why pretend you suddenly became "woke" and hated someone for calling it out.

Marvel, like Hela, vulture, etc. Even Nemo, "he actually won". Were they all having race motives too, fearing they will be labeled a bigot if they said otherwise?

That's a stupid thing to say. People aren't hypersensitive over criticism of white characters although Hela had the "she's a female villain" so there was some praise simply for that.

There are articles and people going after the reviewer who gave the film a poor review. It's a perfect example of exactly what he was talking about andwhy you are wrong.

It's not like Loki is such high bar, in fact I think that he was pretty mediocre for a villain, he has plenty of fans because he is hot. Besides every film seems to have the best villain since Loki.

@black_arrow: Thor Loki was a good villain but yeah he's been propped up by the Tumblr crowd since the first Avengers.

Still Keaton's Vulture earned all the praise he gets. Blanchett and Jordan are also good actors so I'm guessing that their performances and commitment elevate their characters massively.

Tbh, if there's one thing the MCU's done wrong this far, it's villains.

Loki's the best we've seen, and he's not what I'd call a good villain.

Disappointing that the Vulture gets no love. They turned a campy villain into a legitimate menace with solid motivation, actualized perfectly by Keaton. The MCU hasn't had incredible villains, but the Vulture was great.

I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the movie. Going to be hard to top Keaton's Vulture... the "every man's" villain.

To be honest, after all this time, I still can't get on the Loki bandwagon train. Like, he was alright, don't get me wrong, but besides being just 'alright' he didn't do that much imo.

IMO, the best villain so far should be either the Vulture or HYDRA/Winter Soldier/Alexander Pierce.

Do you know what other character from a TV series Loki reminds me in film. Ares from Xena and Hercules i know Loki is a trickster but so is Ares only Ares doesnt mind using power while Loki is just playing. Killmonger in the comics he is wakanda's version of an Ultra-nationalist with a sad upringing and only cared for his position at the end. I havent seen the movie i bet its a good movie but dont wanna give money to Marvel anymore cause they screwed the Comics they write the comics as if its a movie. You may say that what does this have to do with Killmonger...well considering that Marvel has made alot of brooding anti-hero Villains now Killmonger is well generic if he was a CAW from the Smackdown games he is Preset 1, a clone trooper from Starwars among other clonetroopers i am sorry but the BEST BLACK SUPERVILLAIN AINT KILLMONGER ITS

Micheal Clarke Duncan's Portrayl of the KINGPIN!!!

and he dont need any suits when it comes to a street fight god rest his soul .

Just saw BP last night, Killmonger is definitely not a bad villain at all but their's nothing special about him. He's around Loki and Hela level but no where near close to Vulture or Zod

LOKI sucks. He was made comedy relief since the first Avengers movie, not to mention they insist on making him a cutesy, witty reluctant crime fighter.

Netflix does much better with the Marvel villains that is for sure.
