Better franchise: Harry Potter or The Avengers?

While I love Harry Potter, I’ll pick the Avengers movies almost every time.

Harry Potter films are way more nostalgic and probably have more rewatch value imo, though I do prefer IW or EG over any of the HP films (DH Part 2 is pretty close though).

Avengers films outgrossed Harry Potter films by a lot, Harry Potter novels outsells Avengers comics by a lot. About even I guess?

Love the Avengers but Harry Potter was my childhood.

I personally prefer the Avengers.

Harry Potter's novels are better, but I honestly think that the Avengers movies are better than the HP movies. Both are some of the best fantasy/sci fi we've gotten, though.

If it's just the films, then Harry Potter.

Avengers holds up way better, less stupid plot holes and retroactive dickery. (I count Fantastic Beasts as a part of HP)

While I'd re-watch Infinity War over every other HP movie, I'd pick HP verse over Avengers.

I grew bored of Harry Potter after awhile. Avengers everyday.

I would have picked the Avengers, but i cannot sit through them without getting annoyed, especially the later films, because of how they treated and depicted some of my favorite characters. It ruined the experience

With the potterverse i still enjoy the books, and they have their differences to the films which i also like. Win win, because you get a lot more.

Wasn't really into Harry Potter so I guess Avengers.

I think they serve very different purposes and are hard to compare directly like this. IMO Harry Potter tells a better story while Avengers is a better spectacle.

@andromeda101: If we count books, it's also Harry Potter, the Avengers comics do not come close to HP novels in sales.

Like, collectively, over the 60 years that Avengers have been in print? That would surprise me.

@ghostodoofus2: Sales are not reflective of quality, but of accessibility and popularity. The only thing that proves is that Harry Potter books are more accesible and popular than Avengers comics.

Even the films of Harry Potter are far better than the MCU.

Money means nothing in this argument.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. They may not have been around as long, but Harry Potter books have sold over 500 million copies, the most of any book series in history.

Even though I'm not a very big fan of HP, I have to acknowledge that the fact that it probably turned many young people into avid book readers was a big service to culture. The same does apply to Avengers (and the comics medium at large) to an extent, but much less so, and the fact that the movies are probably reverting that process doesn't help much.

How does Rowling's beliefs change the quality of Harry Potter at all?

Yes, it is hard to understand, because Rowling believing something has nothing to do with the quality of the story she created, only the quality of herself.

As a whole story HP is better, singular movies, IW is the best.

The Harry Potter movies are on HBO Max, so I plan to revisit them starting this weekend. Earlier this year I saw the Avengers quadrilogy again and it still holds up. When you add in Captain America Civil War (aka Avengers 2.5), I think it exceeds HP as a form of popcorn entertainment. It’s just a fun thrill ride, thoroughly enjoyable.
