It may be really cliche, and I know they brought him back pretty soon after it happened, but The Death of Superman was pretty epic. What are other instances of hero's deaths and also how writers brought them back. I would like to know what you all come up with.
Best battles where a Hero Dies
One of my favorites is the Death of Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man. Very good story to me and he's not coming back. I really enjoyed Jim Starlin's Death of Captain Marvell despite it not really being a battle. Death of Captain America was pretty cool, but it was stupid how he was brought back. Final Night, the death of Hal Jordan is another favorite of mine and I loved his return. I can also never forget the death of Flash in Crisis on Infinite Earth's. As for Death of Superman... I don't think too highly of it. It just felt like a "look at me" move from DC back then.
Personally though, I'm not that crazy about superheroes deaths since they almost always come back, so it's difficult to take them seriously. But I will admit that they can be fun at that moment.
@cyclonus_the_warrior: welll, you've just listed my favs
Ultimate Spider-Man's death and Nova's death in the Thanos Imparative. Captain Marvels death in Kingdom Come.
@clemj: Sounds like we got good taste. :)

I agree with the above! I would add Damian's death as well, and Thor's death vs the Serpent!
When Cap gets shot after the civil war, only because of what follows in Fallen Son:The Death of Cpt. America,in my opinion it's one of the best limited runs Marvel has ever done.
The guyver when sho figthts enzyme the first time and dies protecting his friends also when his father turns into enzyme 2 on his back and the guyver unit takes over and kills his father.
Damn everyone stole my UU Parker idea...
Next best heroic death is... Superboy - Connor Kent.
OR Banshee.
What was so good about that? Thor just keeled over and died.
Quit hating man!

What's to hate? Thor literally just took a few steps, and then fell down dead.

Wasn't Banshee's death more hilarious than epic? Trying to stop a plane, realizing "Oh God, I can't do this" and then getting smashed by said plane?
Ah , somebody had a glass of Hator-Aide this morning, must be refreshing for you!

Yeah, partially why I included that in my answer. But it could be considered partially epic because he tried to stop the blackbird despite his voice being damaged. It was just a heroic fail lol
