Anyone wanna talk about the manga/anime Beastars?

Also, to be thoughtful to those who watch the anime series, please write with spoiler text or block if you wanna talk manga. Just in case.

After seeing the opening and looking into the concept I think I have a new manga/anime to read/watch.

I'm just watching the anime though, not big on manga reading.

How many eps you watched?

The intro either lure people into the fandom OR it make them too creeped out:P

Personally, I love it, and even wrote an analysis of it:

The opening has a tango-like tune that makes you think of dancing as we see…

… a wolf that is shrouded in shadows and baring his fangs during a full-moon night. Wolfs are usually associated with the full-moon, and we think of a bloodthirsty predator. And sure enough, the beast drools, and we see why.

A rabbit is strolling around the woods, not knowing that it is about to become prey.

The fact that these two animals are wearing clothes like characters from a Beatrix Potter book does not make this scenery any less creepy. In fact, it kinda makes it worse.

When the rabbit is finally aware that it is about to be chased, the woods they are in is then shown as a deer, a stag to be precise. The stag (besides that it will be revealed that said stag has a connection to these two very different animals in the anime) is an in-between of a wolf and a rabbit since it is not a predators but it is still a strong animal and not prey the same way the rabbit is.

Then, the rabbit runs for it’s life as the hungry wolf chases it. When the rabbit trips and the wolf is about to attack…

… it becomes day. The two animals are now in sunlight, not covered in shadows, making the wolf look less intimidating. And they are no longer in a forest(a place where it is survival of the fittest) but are in a garden with something as not-nature-like as a fountain. Something organized and civilized.

The wolf and rabbit can now see each other in a new light(literally) as a young man and woman. Despite being natural enemies, civilization makes romance possible as we see the predator and prey engage in dancing and kissing.

... Aaaaaand then we cut to nighttime, and we see the the wolf red-eyed and deeply disturbed. We also see blood tainting the stone-floor of the organized and civilized garden and the skull and fur of an unidentified animal next to said blood. A butterfly is stuck in the puddle of blood, just to hammer in the point.

So what do we get out of this intro without context? Well, I get out of it that civilization can change how creatures interact, but (as the ending implies) that it is hard to fight ones nature, even if you try to dress it up nicely. Can clothes and good manners make a wolf less of a beast, or is civilization a temporarily fix?

I like these types of animes more. IE: Anthromoprhic

Because it's a different look than just your standard looking human characters, completely different bodies, personalities and so on. It appeals to me far more than just a human cast, cause while they can have different personalities sure...but they are still more or less physically looking the same.

Here with Anthros, there's a drastic difference in everything. This is just even moreso given the whole carnivore and prey dynamic, which normal anime can't really explore.

But yeah, Beastars is great and from other commentary, it just gets better and better if the manga is any indication.

@wolfrazer: A detail I especially like is that Haru has small rabbit eyes unlike other animals in the series, it makes her look even more like a small animal, therefor making her look even smaller, even a bit childlike. Which makes the ending of ep 2 that much more shocking :P

And the fact that the animals has human feet and hands will be visually important later. You might see what I mean if I'm right about episode 6.

@alphamon: Yeah, it was depressing, especially since Jack is (no pun intended) such a good boy. Then again, Legosi talks about how important Jack's friendship has been to him, maybe Jack feels the same way, and he has it hard without his big wolf buddy around.

I'm on a Beastars Discord where one even suggests that Jack might snap and plan on something school shooting like, but I REALLY doubt that.

Feel like "fans" calling Haru a slut miss the point of Haru's character AND a major point of the manga about labels and prejudice.

Know whats so great about Legosi? After Haru tried to have sex with him AND his friend told him about her bad reputation for having a ton of casual sex, he still says that it’s not fair that people label her as a slut. As far as he is concerned, Haru is a kind and complex girl, her sex life is her biz, and no one has the right to judge her based on how many guys she sleeps with.

@waezi2: actually I kinda liked Gary from the beginning and especially after she got here little character arc explain why she dose the things she dose. That and here facil expressions

@waezi2: Legosi is a great character, he's so unassuming but when pushed he's not gonna be pushed around or let anyone else be.

Also agreed about Haru, I'm enjoying all these characters so far.

@alphamon: Beastars is ACTUALLY about animals, they just have somewhat human-likeness.

So no lame give-animal-woman-hair-and-human-face crap.

@alphamon: Also, cheetah is in-universe attractive. Attractive in an animal way, not real world human standards

I've actually read Blacksad and it's one of my favorite comic series ( 9/10 ). Still, I know what you mean.

Read the manga. It's sad that the entire series is basically a teen romance drama but with animals instead.

7/10 for this series

It's pretty good, when I first saw trailers for zootopia I thought it was a kid thing but turns out it was really good.

Honestly, I've always imagined a dubbed version of Louis as if he was voiced like he was Lelouch in Code Geass. Dramatic, confident and graceful. Besides, Wong doesn't even have any official accreditation with any dub company.

I really wished that Season 1 had two cours. The ending of the "Shishigumi/Culture Festival" arc would honestly be the best part to end the first season.

Text below has spoilers for the latest chapter of the manga.

I know some are kinda peeved over the suicide fakeout with Jack, and I get it. The author does that a lot and it begins to feel i'like a boy-who-cried-wolf thing (... hehe, wolf...). But I feel like she use the fakeouts well to create expectations and reveal something shocking anyways that takes us off guard as we expect something specific. In this case how messed up Jack is. The guy is a result of creating a perfect animal and he is aware of this and he is horrified and saddened. And he can't even cry due to his design, so he uses onions to force himself to it, despite knowing that they are toxic to him. And he even says that the other dogs are worse since they are robot-like.

@waezi2: but he did kinda try to kill him self at the end of the chapter so there’s that and as for jack he kinda reminds me of deviljho in a way

@alphamon: Oh yes, Jack has probably been lowkey suicidal for a long time now. Kinda like Sebun using the multi species train without knowing she hoped someone would eat her.

How does he remind you of deviljho?

@waezi2: @waezi2: in the sense of him being perfect but at the cost of something like not being able to cry or holding in dark secrets, but in deviljhos case him have an unseasonably hunger that can never be quinced but at the same time being the ultimate predator

@alphamon: I liked the lore that the chapter provided.

... And Jack kinda ruined the dark tale by making the climax a punchline lol

But for reals, though... the idea about Beastars having this demigod being is actually very interesting.
