@tobymaguire: yes, one movie out of 22. One movie with nearly no marketing and barely (if at all) connects to the larger MCU.
@the_stegman: only solo movies that have made more than one billion is Black Panther and Ironman 3. The thing is both Black Panther and Ironman was known to general audience from previous movie while Captain Marvel was not.
Captain Marvel release on International Woman's day and the extra female audience for female superhero in addition to male audience is the reason she got into billion club.
Also entire Avengers cast was in the marketing of Antman and wasp with where was Antman campaign. Also Antman has more connection to MCU than Captain Marvel.
There's plenty to criticize and not much to praise here.
But the two things that really get me and they're the ones I've mentioned elsewhere are:
1) Luke Fox already sucks, I dont understand why they take characters like Mr Terrific and Batwing and then reduce them to this. Luke is a tough guy, an MMA fighter who is proficient in robotics. Way to reduce him to quirky nerd who is just a male Black Felicity. Seriously this CW formula is just straight up garbage.
2) Ruby Rose cannot act, I she repeat, she cannot act. Amell was wooden and stiff as hell but his physique, good looks and natural athleticism carried him. Rose doesn't have such assets. She has nothing going for her, nothing. Its almost shocking that they chose her for their lead.

I disagree... Captain Marvel was boosted like no other Mcu film by the Avengers final chapter... As we saw with Harry Potter audiences can't wait for the second part, and that after credits scene with Fury was crucial for CM numbers, when we got close to Endgame release, instead of continuing to drop Captain Marvel actually increased its domestic numbers... link

Now, that doesn't mean that "the extra female audience" was not a factor, and that there isn't an audience even for Batwoman, but i just don't see the next Captain Marvel movie make $1B again...
I really don't see what the problem people have with this. Every time you have a movie/show with a female lead, everyone accuse the studio of beings SJW's and pushing the feminazi agenda. Studios NEVER make something they do not think will earn them money. The only agenda they have is to earn money. The feminazi agenda (which isn't a thing) isn't going to earn them any money.
They know that Batman is popular, that is why they did this. Also, this line:
"I'm not about to let a man take credit for a woman's work.."
I can't believe that people missed the point of that line all together.
@asgaard: The increase in Domestic number happened way after she passed 1 billion in March 30. Like 1 week prior to Endgame.
Captain Marvel 2 box office depends on its quality, but I don't see why not. If there are epic big scale action sequence which there should be considering her power level and good story and villain, the movie can easily hit 1 billion.China loved her more than Black Panther and Spiderman
Aquaman, Venom, Jumanji, Shazam, Endgame has already proved it is pointless to speculate box office

Sure, but it still says that CM was taking advantage (since the release) from Endgame anticipation...

Yes, but make $1B is not that easy, specially if you pander too much to a specific demographic... Also doubt that the mentioned demographic will always say present since each year Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel will become less special, with the addition of other female leads like Birds of Prey or Black Widow.
I really don't see how China liked that much of Captain Marvel, i also could argue that China liked better from Ant-Man and the Wasp since it had better drops, the numbers say that China loved Aquaman and this movie sequel will definitely perform very well in the mentioned market, the Chinese numbers of Captain Marvel don't say the same...
Aquaman, Venom, Jumanji, Shazam, Endgame has already proved it is pointless to speculate box office
Here i definitely agree, but we still should give logic its importance, (if not there is no point to debate it)... I mean Captain Marvel was a disappointing Mcu movie, and the all creative team and most performances were below the Mcu norm, and that to me always will be variables for the sequel.
@asgaard: I was comparing Captain Marvel with other MCU solo movies not with legends like Aquaman and Venom. The Chinese Maoyan score of Captain Marvel was average compared to Black panther which was poor.
Captain Marvel had A score and 8.9 Maoyan score which all hits the movie is average not disappointing to audience.
Ultimately Captain Marvel 2 depends upon what the movie is gonna do and who all are going to be in the movie. Is it gonna be Thor 2, Ironman 2 or Winter solider. MCU has a history learning from mistake of previous movies and making better movies.
I can't comment about Female superhero fatigue because male Superhero fatigue is still not a thing after 10 years.
I believe both WW84 and Captain Marvel 2 has shot at 1 billion if it had an Ok to good story and great CGI.
The only movie that was an Event was Black Panther and it is probably difficult for BP sequels to match original box office.
I believe most Marvel movies especially sequels like Dr Strange 2 Guardians 3 has also shot at 1 billion
Guardians 3 is pretty much guaranteed if Thor is in the movie.
I don't necessarily disagree, aside from the part where you said that only BP was an event... The (domestic) drops were very similar to Wonder Woman... The BP numbers were higher, but i think there is no one left still arguing that the Dceu is the bigger brand...

And i never made a point about fatigue, it was about the ability to constantly appeal to a specific demographic, i like action movies but i don't watch them all, that doesn't mean that there is fatigue with action movies, i don't see females watch every future comic book movie with female lead, fatigue is one thing (its applied to the casual movie going audience) other very different thing is to appeal beyond the casual movie going audience or not...
They never learn do they.......they don't notice that shoving feminist/pcstuff in our face ends very badly *cough supergirl* all well I guess they are a glutton for punishment.
CW has been pretty bad do awhile.
I think they've had politics like this in their shows since Supergirl, and overtime it spread to diffrent shows.
Lmao degenerate content. Feminist never fail to look full blasted retarded. Cliche cliche.
Step 1. Emphasize the fact that you are a woman.
Step 2. Throw shade at anyone with an X and a Y chromosome.
Step 3. Emphasize the fact that you are a woman.
And for extra cookie points with the tumblr creatures have her be lesbian. It never ceases to amaze me. Meanwhile not a single male superhero goes, "tHiS loOkS lIkE A jOb fOr a MaN!"
