Everybody knows the famous battle phrases such as the Thing’s "It's clobberin' time!" and the Human Torch’s "Flame on!" These have been constants for the characters and are about just as well known as the articulator’s themselves.
Not too many others have had as much success. Remember when Luke Cage used to say “Sweet Christmas?” The last time he said it was during Secret Invasion but it
wasn’t the real Power Man. It was a Skrull.
I admit "Sweet Christmas" would sound a bit cheesy today, but not any less than what the Thing and Human Torch say. Then, could it be that Luke Cage was threatened by Santa to stop using his phrase?
Still some other phrases really wouldn’t have any place anymore. For example, in the early days of the X-men, both Wolverine and Colossus had their own phrases too. Wolverine used to say “What the flamin’” whenever he was in battle. This might have been characteristic of the times where people didn’t exercise their bitter tongue as often. Now, if he continued to use such a phrase he would be a joke and no one would take him seriously.
Colossus is another who’s phrase seems to have been outdated. An annunciation of his phrase, “By the white wolf”, would leave most to believe him to be experiencing hallucinations and would try to put him in a mental institution. There would certainly be none of the fast ball specials because no one would want to be thrown by a guy thought to be experiencing hallucinations.
Which phrases do you think should make a comeback in modern continuity or which should be abolished? Which are your favorites?
