Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.
We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.
America's Got Powers #1
Writer Jonathan Ross and superstar artist Bryan Hitch begin a new series playing off America's obsession with talent (or lack thereof). Welcome to America's Got Powers, the biggest TV show on earth, where fortune and fame are dangling in front of the faces of the latest generation of super-powered teenagers. But young Tommy Watt's hopes of becoming the latest William Hung with super powers might be dashed when the dark heart of America's Got Powers begins to reveal itself.
Avenging Spider-Man #6
The Omega Effect event taking place in the pages of Avenging Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher kicks off this week with Avenging Spider-Man #6.
Writers Mark Waid and Greg Rucka team up, with artist Marco Checchetto in tow, to finally tell the story behind Matt Murdock's mystery disk drive with the power to take down every criminal organization in the Marvel universe. Expect a lot of head-butting between Punisher and Daredevil, while Spider-Man watches from a safe distance with popcorn in hand.
Batman: Arkham Unhinged #1
You liked the Batman: Arkham City video game, right? OK, let's be serious: every Batman fan on the planet loved that game, and rightfully so. Now you're all jonesing for more bat-action set in Rocksteady's dark universe. That's where Batman: Arkham Unhinged comes in.
Writer Derek Fridolfs and artist Mark S. Miller plan to highlight the various heroes and villains of the Arkham world with this series. This first issue actually acts as a prequel to the Arkham City game, exploring the relationship between Catwoman and Two-Face and how they got wrapped up in Hugo Strange's plot to overtake Gotham.
Batman, Incorporated Vol. 1 Deluxe HC
Finally! Grant Morrison's entire "first season" of Batman, Inc. is collected in this beautiful oversized hardcover. This book contains every issue of Batman, Incorporated to date, including the extra-sized one-shot, "Leviathan Strikes!," that rounded out Morrison's first season of Batman, Inc.
Joining Morrison along for the ride are artists Yanick Paquette, Chris Burham, Cameron Stewart. If you want to get yourself primed for the next volume of Morrison's whacky, globe-trotting Batman adventure starting later this year, then this hardcover is a must.
Green Lantern: The Animated Series #1
Have you been digging the new Green Lantern animated series? If so, then why don't you jump aboard this new comic series spinning out of said cartoon. Green Lantern: The Animated Series #1 is written by Art Baltazar and drawn by Dario Brizuela and pits Hal Jordan against a captured Red Lantern and his mentor, Kilowog. There's about to be a epic rumble in the (space) jungle, if you catch my drift.
Northlanders #50
All great stories must come to an end. Northlanders #50 represents the final chapter in the epic "Icelandic Trilogy," wrapping up the centuries-spanning tale of the Haukssons, Iceland's notorious organized crime family, while also acting as the final issue for the entire series. Join writer Brian Wood and artist Paul Azaceta as they send this fantastic Vertigo series off in style.
Saga #2
It's the second issue of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga. Woo!
Deserters Marko and Alana continue to try and outrun their past lives to protect their newborn baby. But with so many enemies, will this sci-fi version of Romeo and Juliet be able to escape and start a new life free of war? Pick up this book to find out.
Secret #1
Jonathan Hickman can not be stopped. This week he kicks off another new series for Image entitled "Secret," with artist Ryan Bodenheim.
Secret is a new ongoing espionage thriller that tells the story of "the shadow world existing between the government and private security firms" and the effect it has on the world when two of the largest governments in the world (US and UK) get systematically taken down.
Secret Service #1
Mark Millar joins forces with Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons for a completely new series called Secret Service. According to Millar, Secret Service is the "ramifications of how America is struggling on the world stage." In addition, Millar thinks the characters of Secret Service are the best he's ever written. Could that be hyperbole? Sure. But with such a creative force working on this title, we would be stupid not to check it out.
Shade #7
James Robinson and artist Javier Pulido continue their series starring The Shade. With the help of his new allies La Sangre and Montpelier, The Shade must stop The Inquisitor from accomplishing this doomsday plan to literally bring Hell to earth. Additionally, issue #7 will give readers their first glimpse at the men responsible for creating The Shade.
