New York City, New York
It was nightfall, which means nothing good would come.Spartan 177 was down to only a few clips. Most of it was used in the first onslaught. He was down to only thirty men. This mission wasn't going well. The attempt to reclaim New York had only one percent chance of success. But what was clear was that the Dark Seekers outnumbered the Spartan one thousand to thirty.
"Everyone, head for the pier!"
The Spartan covered the marines moving past him.Hundreds of infected were charging at the small group. The screams from the Dark Seekers where even louder than the whistles from gunfire. More worse was when they had their prey captive. They would eat them alive.
The swarm were able to grab the remaining marines trying toescape the city. The Petty Chief could do nothing but to retreat. He was faster than normal humans, but was the same speed as the Dark Seekers. Luckily, he was far away from them to get to the pier without a problem. He aimed for the Hornet that was stationed on a dock. He threw his body at one of the wings, wrapping two hands on it. As soon as he held on, the Hornet lifted up from the dock.
The thrusters on the air vehicle roared with ferocity. The Chief climbed on the wing, and sat there. He could only look below. Fire and smoke could be seen from above. The haunting screams still haunt him, even in his dreams. Now, he had those who died in his squad in his mind. He did not want to relive those moments. Andrew pulled his green helmet off.
In 2009, a lethal virus spread through human civilization. It infected any who came in contact with the virus. But it only left less than one percent immune to the K virus. In 2012, Robert Neville discovered the cure for the virus, but died the same day to protect it. It left us to follow in his legacy. Only a few were left to fight for humanity. It was our turn to light up the darkness.
Three years later
San Diego, California
Andrew walked into the conference room, wearing his white militaryuniform. Different medals were displayed on his left shoulder. He sat down on the nearest chair, facing a rectangular table. On the other side, his commanding officer was sitting only across from him.
"I heard about the mission, Petty Chief."
Andrew responded as soon as the commander finished his statement.
"We ran in with a hive, consisting of over one thousand infected withthe K virus. There were too few of us. I'll accept my punishment freely, sir."
The commander sttod on his feet, and began walkingaround the table, with arms behind his back.
"Have you heard of Satellite Dove?"
"No, Sir."
"It is an abandoned satellite located in the Middle East.It was used to gather information from Earth to orbit. I can't say why. What made it unique was its ability to sustain great power. It could send signals throughout the whole planet. It was the largest satellite made. But it was shut down after the K virus hit the Middle East. It is presumed not destroyed by some scientists."
"So, why tell me this now?Is it suppose to be important for something?"
The commander tossed a lamp shaped object across the table.Andrew caught it with both hands. Examining it, Andrew could see a blue liquid through a special glass, covering the whole object. Andrew had a feeling where the commander was getting to.
"That is a heavy concentration of the K virus antidote.Chief, this is a chance to stop the spreading of the virus once and for all. We can't cure the world by moving by foot. A lot has been sacrificed."
Andrew rose from his chair.
"I will take a team and activate the satellite, Sir.That is if I may?"
"This is why I called you in, Son."
The Petty chief gave a salute to his commander.
"I won't fail you, commander."
The commander nodded his head.
"How many marines, commander?"
"None."
Andrew gazed at the commander, with a puzzling look.
"You are relieved from Petty Chief. You will be placed in a new operation, with a new of a kind team."
Trying to find words, Andrew responded after a few seconds.
"Thank you, Sir."
The elderly commander walked up to Andrew with documentsin his right hand. He handed them to Andrew. Andrew took them from the commander's wrinkled hands.
"This will be your new team, Spartan 177."
Andrew flipped through the documents, reading a bit about his newteamates. Some of the recruits are wanted by agents or some other organization. Their description and qualities made Andrew a skeptic. This wasn't like the old commander. Andrew read off the names Larry, Cobalt, Angelic Reaper, N.O.V.A., Tekken, and Nightmare Wing. What kind of names are these for a soldier? Sure we are named after our number tag, but this is insane.
"Is this a joke?"
"Son, the world is changing faster than you think.Things never thought possible are revealing themselves. We were able to recruit those names just in time when we needed you as our Chief. They are willing to help us. Look around you. Did you think it was possible for Earth to fall because of a simple infected strand?"
The commander put his right hand on the documents.Ignoring what the commander said, Andrew responded by asking a question.
"What's this operation called?"
The commander turned from Andrew's face and walkedup to a round window. He looked out of the window and could see the blue sea, from the battleship's window.
"Operation W.A.L., short for We Are Legend, was madein honor of Robert Neville. We are his legacy. Light up the darkness."
"Sorry, what was that?"*
"Light up the darkness, chief."
Andrew looked at back of the commander's head.He has gone mad, is what first came up to Andrew's mind. He was near his seventies. He could be losing his wisdom. But his job was to understand and do. Maybe the old man knew what he was trying to say.
The next day, Andrew reported to the designated air carrier. There, a Pelican waited for its crew and cargo. The green armor on Andrew reflected the sun ray's, as he walked towards the Pelican. In front of the aircraft, were six individuals standing below of the Pelican.
"The sht starts now."* Whispered Andrew.
The Spartan stopped, facing the new team. They were lined up in one single row. That was a good quality. His face faced what it seemed was a man inside a Knight armor. You have to be kidding me? Next to him, was a teenanger of short stature. He smiled at Andrew. Oh great, a joker. Next to the teenanger, was a woman with dark hair, followed by another female carrying a scythe, a man carrying a cape, and a man dressed up like Bruce Lee. This is the Marines, not a f*cking movie set.
"Well, it seems like i'm your new captain! Here are the rules when you are under my rule: you take orders, you follow them, no questions asked! Was I peachy clear?!"
There was no response.Only the motor from the Pelican could be heard. Andrew caught a hand go up, seeing through his yellow visor.
"You may speak."
"Can we go now?"
The Spartan was disgusted by the response coming fromthe teenanger wearing the yellow cape. Andrew muttered a cuss word. Saying nothing, Andrew walked past Larry and N.O.V.A. The others followed the captain, entering the hull of the ship.
There were two rows of seats in the hull, one oneach side of the wall. Everyone sat on a seat. Andrew looked ahead, seeing Larry play with his finger, waving it around. Turning his head left, he could see Tekken at the end of the row, where Andrew was sitting in, staring at N.O.V.A. Angelic Reaper and N.O.V.A. were whispering something to themselves. N.O.V.A. looked at Tekken, who chuckled at her. The agent wanted N.O.V.A., raised her fist, flipping Tekken off. Her fist then turned into a ball of fire. Tekken could only gulp.
Next to Angelic Reaper, sat Nightmare Wing. He was quite, holding his sword against his chest armor. No one could see if he was sleeping or not, because of his helmet. Cobalt, sat right next to Nightmare Wing. He did not move, but just stared at Andrew. The Pelican rose from the ground, with the doors on the hull shutting. Andrew moved his head back, attempting to sleep.
Somewhere in the Middle East
"Move out!"
Cobalt was the first to jump off.Followed by N.O.V.A., Larry, Angelic Reaper, Nightmare Wing, and Tekken. Spartan 177 was the last to leave the Pelican. The group walked through the heavy red sand, with their feet sinking into the sand with every footstep. The Pelican hovered up behind the team, rocketing away to the sky.
Spartan 177 stopped the team, putting his right fistup. They were facing a tremendous tower. Above, the largest satellite dish ever made rested on the tower. The Spartan turned to his team.
"Our job is to go underground, make our way up thetower, and activate the satellite dish. We can only activate it from the inside. Once that's done, a satellite from orbit will fire a signal here and will distrupt the Dove, sending a global wave to Earth. Everyone is counting on us, so let's finish this mission and get on with life."
There was a steel plated door mounted on the tower. It was locked from the outside. Cobalt stepped infront of the door. The rest of the team waited behind Cobalt to do something. Spartan 177 wanted to see what these people can do. With two open hands facing the door, Cobalt made the door creak. Cobalt squinted his two eyes. A loud crack was made after his eyes squinted. The steel plated door was ripped off from the wall. Using magnetism, Cobalt can accomplish those small feats. The door was floating in mid air. Waving his hand, the door was flung aside. There was a deep cavity on the wall.
"Everyone, on me!"
Spartan 177 ran inside of the tower, with assualt rifle on bothhands. The rest followed the leader. Spartan 177 guided the team into a series of stairs, that lead underground. It was dark, but the light on Spartan 177's gun would give a clearer view. But the light soon died. Spartan 177 tapped his weapon twice, no dice. They could be facing possible exposure to Dark Seekers without light. The captain turned to the person behind him.
"Nova, light up the way."
"Sure."
N.O.V.A.'s body was then consumed with flames. She looked like a living firecracker. Her red and yellow flames were able to burn the Captain, before he could move away from her path. His suit was scorched with flames and was darkened. N.O.V.A. marched forward, lighting the path with her flames. The team passed a few rooms and labs. There was still furniture, like if nothing was disturbed. This gave relief for the team.
"We should almost be at the sphere." said the captain. There were screeches ahead. The team was alarmed, taking precautions. Spartan 177 raised his gun towards the darkness ahead. Angelic Reaper took out her scythe, while Nightmare Wing unsheathed his longsword. N.O.V.A. was still in front, taking slow steps.
"Be careful where you lead us, Nova." blurted out Angelic Reaper.
"I'm trying."
While moving up, N.O.V.A.'s flames were able to reveal an unseentunnel. that was where the team needed to move to. Clanking noises echoed near the group. They can't face infections, or they could endanger the whole team and mission.
"Run!" yelled the Spartan. After the yell, footsteps could be heard beating in the ground nearby. They were coming quick too. The seven W.A.L. members raced through the tunnel like horses in a match. Tekken's speed allowed him to take the lead from the group. He was also the first to get out of the tunnel.
"Hurry!" yelled Tekken.
Larry was the second to exit the tunnel, followed by the rest. The captain spent time firing back as he was running backwards. He got out last.
"There's no door here! How do we stop those things?!" askedAngelic Reaper. Cobalt's eyes met with an aluminum table. With one hand, he raised his hand up. He levitated the table infront of the gap, from where they came in. It would work as a blockade for now.
Spartan 177 examined the room. There was a round ball, where large cables would be attached to it. They made it to the sphere without losing a teamate. The captain walked over to a display screen. There were buttons around the screen. He could identify the buttons, thanks to N.O.V.A.'s fire, that continued to light their every movement. The captain punched a few buttons in a sequence. The screen lit up, giving off a white color. The lightbulbs in the room turned on as well. everyone watched the screen, except for Cobalt. There was a loud bang. Everyone turned around. The Dark Seekers were trying to get in by breaking through the barrier.
Though the tower was operating, the satellite was not functioning. There was a loading bar, displayed on the screen. The satellite would be available for use in approximately five minutes. The captain spun his body, peering at the blockade.
"What is it?" Asked Nightmare Wing.
"We have to protect this sphere, until the satellite is up and running."
Listening to the orders, the team stood next to Spartan 177.Cobalt's face was covered with sweat. His power could only take so much, but he also dealt with the force the Dark Seekers threw. They continued throwing their bodies against the blockade on the other side.
Cobalt held long as he could. He dropped his arm down from exhaustion. The door wasn't held by Cobalt anymore. It was now defenseless. Cobalt was dizzy and walked around like a drunk. As he was about to collapse from the power drain, Angelic Reaper caught him before he could fall. The table was knocked down. Six pale Dark Seekers came sprinting from the tunnel. Nightmare was the first to react. Charging at a Dark Seeker, he lunged his sword at the infected, penetrating its ribs.
The other five threw themselves towards Tekken.Spartan 177 was able to fire just in time to nail a bullet at a dark Seeker's skull. Tekken ducked his head down, evading three jumping Dark Seekers. Tekken was pushed to the ground by one Dark Seeker. It attempted to bite Tekken's neck, but Tekken held on hand on its neck. With his left hand free, he grabbed the Dark Seeker's hairless head and spun its head around once, using his strength. Tekken kicked the lifeless body aside.
"Who's next on my list?!"
N.O.V.A. turned her attention to the three Dark Seekers. She lifted her body in the air and set her two hands forward. She unleashed a spray of hot fire at the three Dark Seekers, covering their bodies with fire. They rolled in the solid ground and screamed, until they died.
Seconds later, a whole pack of Dark Seekers appeared from out of the shadows. As feared, they were encountering a hive. The captain tossed a spike grenade from his leather belt at a cluster of rabid Dark Seekers. As soon as the grenade stuck into a Dark Seeker's body, an explosion erupted, causing the ceiling to rumble. The explosion blew a few Dark Seekers to bits, but the ones that were near had spikes pinned to their bodies.
Angelic Reaper stood infront of Cobalt, who was laying onthe ground unconscious. She rotated her scythe in circles, taunting the Dark Seekers. At a blink of an eye, she disappeared from sight, only to reappear behind a Dark Seeker. She swerved her scythe at its neck, cutting its head clean off. She teleported again in front of two Dark Seekers, swinging her scythe in a vertical arc, seperating their torsos from their legs. Just as a Dark Seeker leapt towards the fallen Cobalt, Angelic Reaper teleported back to protecting cobalt. Seeing the Dark Seeker try to hurt cobalt, she stepped infront of the Dark Seeker. She threw her scythe down, digging the blade onto its skull as the dark Seeker was in the air. The blow knock the Dark Seeker to the ground. Struggling to pull her scythe, Angelic Reaper pulls it out. Her scythe was dripping the blood of her kills.
Spartan 177 was thrown against a wall, landing on his knees. He shook his head, picking his dropped weapon. He pulled his head up, looking at everyone fight. Everything was moving slow, as if he controlled time. N.O.V.A. was cornered, firing fire balls at the overwhelming numbers of infected. Angelic Reaper was cutting anyone who tried to get to Cobalt. Larry burned stray Dark seekers with his finger. He was hovering around, trying to catch Dark Seeker's attention to him, to help his teamates from falling against large numbers of infected. Tekken and Nightmare Wing fought by the tunnel, trying to stop the flow of Dark Seekers from getting to the sphere. They fought side by side, with each taking care of the others back. Tekken used martial arts and Nightmare Wing concentrated on using his sword, hacking and slicing Dark Seeker flesh. Dozens of bodies layed around them.
The team could not continue this momentum. They would eventually tire out and make a fatal mistake. They each dropped huge amounts of sweat. Their faces were filthy with dirt from their rapid fight to defend the sphere. As the captain pushed his assualt rifle against a Dark Seeker's jaw, he remembered his commander's words. Light up the darkness.
The loading was now complete. While the others gave coverage to the captain, Sartan 177 used his fingers to press the remaining needed punches. Hearing screams from the dark Seekers and bodies fall, he picked up the pace. He was just about finished. There was an update in the screen, showing the satellite's status. It was up and running. Just as he felt hope, he felt a heavy force knock him down to the ground. Debris layed on his body. Only his arm could be seen, hanging about. Sweat dripped from his black glove.
"Captain!...Captain!....Captain!" was the last thing he heard.
There was a tap on Andrew's helmet visor. He opened his eyelids, stinging them when he did so. The sun was in his eyes. He could also see the blue sky and six dark shadows. Dark Seekers, was the first thing that came to his mind. He focused his eyes more.
"Welcome back." Said Cobalt.
"Is it finished?"
Tekken extended his arm down at Andrew's face.Andrew raised his hand and was helped up on his feet. He towered seven feet, as soon as he stood up.
"Yeah, you almost were too, Cap."
Andrew turned his face to where the tower once stood. It was now in ruins. How did that happen? Before he could ask, Larry answered before Andrew could ask.
"When the signal above hit the tower, it sent a wave throughout Earth, but the Dove took damage in the process. It wasn't strong enough to sustain after, but it was able to hit the K virus with accuaracy."
"Yeah, all six of us had to carry you out of there before you could be lost."Said Angelic Reaper.
What happened back there was beyond explainable. On its first mission, We Are Legend, was able to stop a pandemic. They saved billions of lives that could of been lost to one person's mistake.
"Thank you, all of you."
The whole team smiled, some having blood on their teeth as they smiled. Now, they would wait for escort. But as they waited, they had feelings that this was only the beginning of a legacy. One that would Light up the darkness.
