CCC 70 (where this character came from)

Previously

Carla’s aka Apollo took on a mission for the president. He was upset that the mission to capture Mark Metcalf was a failure, but Apollo knew that it was only a matter of time before the leader of the free world would call again. Carla was right. A rouge nation sought to negotiate with the United States and the President called on her to be an unofficial member of the diplomatic mission. It made a rogue state more receptive when they were afraid he had said.

Carla levitated over a site that satellite photos suggested was an underground nuclear testing facility. Carla’s mission was to obtain proof and to destroy the facility. Carla descended upon an air field, she took pictures of the surrounding buildings and vehicles that were in sight with her digital camera. The facility was also surrounded by mountains and could have additional threats she had not noticed. Carla performed a few flyovers of the facility and took more pictures of personnel and weapons. With that part of her mission satisfied, her eyes glowed with energy and she began her assault.

Carla’s heat vision set the air field ablaze. Helicopters and planes burst into fire as soldiers mobilized. Their counter attacks did nothing. Bullets that hit her bounced off her skin, armored vehicles were unable to get a lock on her as she flew and Carla made sure to reduce them into slabs of molten metal. Carla landed in the middle of the site, she took site of the buildings surrounding her and blasted them with streams of energy. The buildings crumbled and the air was choked by fire and smoke.

Over the chaos Carla could hear the screams of the people who worked here. Carla took what clear pictures she could and continued foot. She had yet to see any sign of nuclear testing or where an entrance to the main facility was. Frustrated, she flew back up into the air and looked around at the mountains. Carla flew closer to the mountains and scanned the area, there was nothing and that didn’t seem right.

As Carla flew over the forest and to the face of a mountain, her enhanced hearing picked up the sounds of what sounded like tracked vehicles, motors and large guns. The air had burst. Artillery sailed through the air from the forest below and machine gun fire from a hollowed-out portion of the mountain all targeted her. Carla evaded and like a rocket she shot herself toward the mountain. The rounds they fired at her were too slow and flew around them like it was a dance.

Her eyes glowed with power as she crashed through the narrow opening, the soldiers inside of the machine gun nest screamed and were immediately silenced by, Carla’s heat vision turning them into ash. The mountain shook as artillery bombarded the mountain, Carla took a picture of the inside of the machine gun nest built into the mountain and flew back outside.

Carla used her powers to set the forest ablaze and moments after that the mountain and the forest were all enveloped in the inferno. Carla took a deep breath and flew upward thousands of feet, past where planes could fly and stopped just as she started to feel cold from the lack of atmosphere. The super human waited. The rouge government she was harassing would have to investigate this attack and she was right. Fighter planes flew over the base and nearby forest she attacked. Carla exhaled and dropped from the sky like a rock, as she came upon one of the fighters, Carla braced herself and smashed through one of the wings.

Carla’s head spun and she struggled to stay conscious but worked through it to fly to another plane. Carla drove her fingers through the underside of the plane and hung on. The plan banked hard on its side and flew from the area. Carla waited and let the plane fly her to its destination.

The plane carried, Carla for several miles before it started to descend. Carla focused her vision at the base of another mountain, there was a large clearing with a runway going through it that lead to a large set of steel blast doors. Carla pulled herself up from where she held onto the plane and threw herself back as hard as she could. The plane smashed into the runway as Carla flew to the doors. The doors started to close, but Carla got their first and knocked the thick steel doors off the track they were on and launched them into the bunker she had found.

One last plane touched down as Carla turned around and fired her heat vision at close range. The explosion washed her in flame. It had no effect at all. Sirens screamed in the bunker, men were shouting and there were a few gunshots that were directed for her. Carla walked to a large elevator platform that lead underground. The controls were damaged by the explosion. Carla was being peppered by bullets from soldiers on a balcony above her. She was tired of it.

Carla pushed off one leg and lunged dozens of feet toward the soldiers faster than they could see. The first soldier’s head was crushed by her slamming it into the wall behind him, the other men froze. Carla wasted no time and dispatched them. One’s soldier was decapitated by a swing of her hand, Carla kicked another in the groin so hard the force of her kick nearly split him in two and all before they could process the brutality. Carla had to peel the man off her leg with a hard shove, the corpse slammed into another small group of soldiers that attempted to rush her on the balcony.

Carla burned the rest with her heat vision before they could scream. Carla, levitated off the balcony and melted a hole big enough to fit through on the elevator and flew down into the bunker. It felt like miles before she reached another entrance. The doors like the entrance to the bunker were made of thick steel. It took Carla only moments to melt a hole big enough to walk through.

Carla, could hear gunshots and screams. It wasn’t because of anything she had done yet. She had found an area that looked like a lab and office area as she walked down the hallway from the elevator. As she observed and took pictures she focused on bodies lined up against the wall that were shot. Computers were smashed and papers were tossed around or burning in trash cans. Carla, continued her advance through the bunker.

As Carla rounded a corner to another hall way and passed a window, she paused when she looked through it. The underground facility stretched on for further than she thought, a set of train tracks lead to a tunnel out of the facility or maybe into another part. Carla took a picture and continued. Carla thought about how this poor country could excavate an underground base like this one. How? Nothing in the briefing she had gotten suggested the country was capable.

There were other things about this facility, Carla thought was odd. This underground facility was massive, bigger than any she had ever been to and had to train in on the president’s orders to keep her existence secret. Machines seemed to have been built into the rock, the hallways were lit from above and below. It was also very warm and the ground was heated. Carla, just took pictures and didn’t question it further.

Carla crossed the hall and entered a room that she had heard voices still. A soldier with the bodies of workers at his feet stood in front of a younger woman. He was yelling and held her at gun point. Carla lunged and shoved him aside like a rag doll, his body crashed into a wall. A bloody smear on the wall and a broken corpse on the floor remained.

<Answer my questions.> Carla ordered the worker who had started to scream and bawl. Carla, knelt to the woman’s eye level. Carla pulled out her camera and set it to record. Carla ordered her again, <Answer my questions. >

The woman kept wailing and rambling. Carla rolled her eyes and walked to the controls on the wall. Carla pressed a random series of buttons, she didn’t recognize the symbols on the keys. They weren’t in any language she had seen. The wall began to light up and buzz with energy that would have been too quiet to hear if not for Carla’s enhanced hearing. Carla winced as the wall faded to reveal a large chamber. Wires, pipes and generators lead to a platform where a man was encased up to his waist. A harness held him up ward and his hands were shackled to the ceiling.

<What is this?> Carla asked as she recorded what she saw. Carla couldn’t understand this. She was looking for proof of nuclear weapons tests. How was a country so poor able to build a facility like this and who was this man?

Carla turned to the scientist who still sat on the floor and cried, < Who is that man?> Carla demanded.

<A… power source.> The scientist answered.

<He has powers?> Carla asked, her eyes flared with energy.

<Not like you.> The scientist answered, her voice had grown calm and even angry.

Carla, in a flash of speed lifted the woman and pinned her to a wall across the room, <Then tell me what this is!>

<He radiates energy. Lots of it.> The woman answered, the woman had started to shake and her voice remained calm. <He can’t control it though. He poisoned his entire village.>

<So you’re experimenting on him?> Carla questioned.

“No.” The woman answered in perfect English. “Our plans are so much bigger than what you, warm bloods can fathom.”

The woman hissed, her hands elongated and turned into claws. Her jaw dislocated and revealed rows of sharp teeth. Carla still had her camera on record and filmed the transformation. Carla had never seen anyone with powers like this. There was more to this and she was going to find out.

“Do you heal?” Carla asked as the woman swiped at her with her claws. Carla dodged the swing and back handed the woman to the ground and her camera in her hand. The woman stumbled back and Carla looked down at her hand. She cursed herself to see that her camera had been crushed in her hurry to attack this shape shifter.

The woman howled in pain and scrambled to her feet. Her jaw was broken and twisted to the side of her face. Her bones popped and her Jaw slowly returned to normal. The woman lunged above, Carla and ran for the exit. Carla intercepted her before she could make it to the door and pushed her away. The woman slid and hit the wall next to the observation window.

“I told you already you’re going to answer my questions.” Carla said again to the woman. Carla’s eyes flashed and a hole burned through the glass leading to the observation chamber where the other super human was shackled.

“You monster!” The woman screamed over the alarms blaring and the automated warmings about the radiation leaking into the facility, “You’ve ruined this facility! Our work!”

“You can heal.” Carla, picked the woman up and pressed her against the wall. “But I don’t think… it can handle this much radiation. You’re going to die.”

The woman clawed and thrashed at Carla to no effect, “What’s going on here, for the last time!”

The woman snarled and began, “There are many labs. Many projects. This one was studying a way to turn this man’s power into a renewable source of power. How to control it.”

Carla dropped the woman and examined her broken camera. Carla opened a small slot on the side and saw the memory card was intact, “I could see why your government would want that.”

Carla could feel the air in the room get hotter and she could smell the metal burn. Carla put a hand through her hair and pulled back a hand full of it, “You’d go from poor and unimportant to the most powerful nation overnight.”

The woman laughed and coughed up blood, her skin started to sag as if it were clothing that were too big for her, “You’re drawing the wrong conclusions… I’m not… human.”

“Our goals are bigger than that.” The woman said, blood gargled in her throat and teeth began to fall out of her mouth, her breaths sounded painful.

Carla ended her last painful moments with a stream of energy from her eyes and reduced her into charred bones. What the woman said implied there was something bigger than this rouge government out there. Carla thought about the conspiracy she was investigating with Agent Cooper. The size of this facility and its strange designs.

Carla flew through the hole she had created to the observation center. The heat being generated by the imprisoned super human generated was so intense that as, Carla got closer her hair started to burn and her sweat evaporated. She winced with pain as she had come face to face with the super human, her uniform had begun to melt to her skin, her face was exposed and began to melt from the muscle.

The superhuman was unresponsive. Carla, saw no way to remove him from the platform he was restrained to, what she saw as shackles earlier weren’t just shackles, tubes imbedded under his skin pumped him full of an unknown black liquid and when Carla, went to touch him, his skin fell off to expose muscles and bone.

Carla backed away from the man, her vision became blurry and felt it was a lost cause. Carla’s uniform caught fire. Carla pulled the memory car from her pocket and swallowed it to protect it while being this close to the subject. Carla fired her heat vision at the pipes and generators that lead to the platform. Explosions rocked the room, fires had erupted in the room and Carla raced toward the hole she had created to enter this chamber.

Carla screamed. Her hair had all burned off, her skinned was burned and scabbed where it began to heal. Carla felt nauseous and had to cover her mouth and swallow down the contents of her stomach. Carla had started to pull off sections of her burned uniform, parts of which had melted into her oozing skin and exposed muscle.

Every nerve felt like it was on fire, her body hurt and then Carla would recover little by little. Her healing factor saved her from her injuries. She left the room and blasted a hole in the window where the train tracks she saw had been. Carla crashed into the ground. The super human assassin found it hard to concentrate on flight.

Carla followed the tunnel out of the facility. Her body healed slowly, but as she got further away from the base Carla grew stronger and managed to fly the rest of the way out. Her entire body still hurt, her healing factor for some reason, felt slower. Carla would rendezvous with a U.S. Navy ship and then disappear when she was needed again. Carla, thought about what she had seen and knew her time would come again.

@time_phantom: Carla attacked the air field unprovoked before she had any evidence of it being a nuclear facility. Rogue nation or not, this would be seen as a declaration of war. Unless no one managed to get a message out. It seems like the aliens would have used the government against the enemy, but I'm not really clear on whether anyone knows of the aliens' existence or not.

@cbishop: True. This chapter was inspired by the nuclear test site collapse in North Korea. That's real life then I thought, "what if..." and then I added lizard men and supergirl-lite. The aliens aren't common knowledge. Some public officials know or are the aliens. Gonna flesh out their motivations in the next few chapters.
