TGorilla mayhem.

The light-haired woman with the taser moved carefully through the abandoned factory, stalking her latest quarry. Close behind her were Brian and Maurice, her partners in the chase, and Tabby, the camerawoman. Currently, the view from the camera was just the back of their heads, and little else in the darkened space. The camera was filming with a night lens, so everything looked a pale, glowing shade of green. Suddenly the leader held up a fist, signalling for everyone to stop. "Shh! Do you hear that?"

The group went silent, and they looked all around, though clearly not seeing anything specific. "All I hear is a dripping sound Dani," said Brian.

"Yes, that," she confirmed. "That's City Slicker! It's coming from the tank in the corner. Let's--"

"--We interrupt this episode of Danika Sedova: Bounty Hunter Babe for this special report." The announcer's words are accompanied by the logo for the Larsen Channel Seven News.

"Good evening. I'm Phillip Thyme..."

"...And I'm Paige Webb..."

"...And we're bringing you this special report following the progress of the journey home of a fallen hero. Dedicated to protecting America from interdimensional threats, he was known to the world as The Crossing Guard," says Phillip. "He of course became known as The American Guardian when the President recognized his role in stopping the Cyborgorillas. Also known as Silverbacks due to their metallic enhancements, they're cybernetically enhanced sentient apes seemingly bent on the destruction of humanity. The Crossing Guard valiantly drove them back into their dimensional space known as Gorilla Grotto- the highlight of a heroic career spent criss-crossing America via railroad.

"His train, officially designated The Freedom Train, but also known by its popular nickname of the Guardrail- served as a mobile headquarters for the hero for decades. It may not seem like the fastest way to travel the country, but thanks to a teleportation system called a Tesseractuator- or more commonly the Rail Pass- The Freedom Train can be virtually anywhere in the country in a blink of light, and the blink of an eye, by passing through a system of tesseracts."

"The Guardrail will be taking a somewhat slower route today," reports Paige, "making stops across the country, allowing mourners to view the body, currently laid out in repose in a special funeral car. It's reported that the Crossing Guard's daughter and former sidekick, known as The Guardian Angel, will be travelling with the train to escort her father to his final resting place.

"Driving the train of course is The Conductor- the android intelligence that directs The Freedom Train, communicating with GPS satellites and sensors specially commissioned for the International Space Station to ensure that its travels via Rail Pass don't interfere with other trains."

"Paige," Phillip says calmly, "We're now receiving word that the Guardrail is pulling out of the station in San Francisco Bay."

"Oh, look at that!" Paige exclaims happily. "The Freedom Train departs with the fanfare of the United States Marine Band, and the release of thousands of red, white, and blue balloons! Wow, look at that! You might be interested to know that the balloons used in this farewell ceremony are made of a special material derived from the skins of potatoes. As they ascend into the atmosphere, they will gradually begin to shred, and fall back to Earth. They are completely biodegradable, posing no threat to soil, waterways, or wildlife."

"That's good to know," Phillip says somberly. "The Freedom Train is of course the third train to bear this name; the previous two having operated in the 1940's and 1970's, displaying items of national importance to the public. Freedom Train Three will only travel a quarter mile before making its first jump via Rail Pass, and... oh, there it goes now," he says as the screen shows a bright flash of light on the tracks that swallows the short, five-car train. "We now switch you to Cheyenne, Wyoming- the first stop for The Freedom Train on this funeral tour for an American hero. Standing by on scene is Mike Rofon. Mike?"

Cheyenne, Wyoming

"Phillip," Mike responds, "using the Rail Pass, the journey from San Francisco Bay to here in Cheyenne will only take about ten seconds. As you can see on the track behind me, the Tesseractuator is already opening a portal- known as a tesseractuality- so The Freedom Train will be arriving in moments," Mike says with a smile as he turns to watch the track.

As the Guardrail roars into view at the end of the train station's platform, a second tesseractuality opens at the platform's opposite end. Flashes of light can be seen through the windows of the train's middle car, and as the second portal receives the train, a body crashes through one of the windows. It is severed cleanly just below the shoulders as it passes over the edge of the portal. The body disappears with the train, and the head and shoulders crash and roll on the platform, producing screams from people nearby in the crowd.

"Phillip, we're not sure what's going on here," shouts Mike as he shoulders through the fleeing bystanders, closely followed by his cameraman. Panting with the exertion, he says, "As you saw, the Guardrail thundered through this stop, and what appeared to be a body was ejected from the train. We're getting through now, and it's--"

The camera focuses on the head and shoulders, and Phillip says, "It's a gorilla."

"Not just a gorilla," reports Mike. "This ape has a cybernetic eye! Phillip, it looks like Cyborgorillas are aboard The Freedom Train!"

Strasburg, Colorado

As the speeding train roars through a tesseractuality, a battle rages inside between the red-white-and-blue form of The Guardian Angel, and a group of twenty gorillas with various cybernetic enhancements. She's managing to keep them off of her using a forcefield generated by sensors on the train, and an energy weapon the press commonly calls her Flaming Sword. Careening past the platform, and into another portal, the young heroine inside shouts, "Conductor! Whatever you do, don't stop! We can't allow these Silverbacks to endanger the public!"

Denver, Colorado

"Already on it Angel," came the even voice of the android intelligence. "Passing through Denver now. May I suggest 'shock and awe,' Miss?"

Looking at the floor beneath her feet, The Guardian Angel saw a handle recessed in the floor. Quickly squatting to grab hold of it, she said, "I'm grounded. Do it!"

Kansas City, Missouri

As the train raced out of one portal and into another, an electrical charge surged through the train car, incapacitating many of the Silverbacks. One had grabbed another grounding port before the blast.

Bluefield, West Virginia

"What do you want?!" shouted Guardian Angel as the last gorilla pounded against the forcefield protecting her from his grasp.

The ape grunted, "The Conductor. Its control of the Tesseractuator network will allow the Cyborgorillas to appear anywhere in the country; not just at Gorilla Grotto."

"Over my decommissioned body," The Conductor said, sounding offended.

Washington, D.C.

"Conductor! Final Stop!" commanded the Angel.

"Are you certain?" asked the Conductor.

"Meet you back at the Guard Station," she said. A circle of light appeared at her feet, and the Guardian Angel dropped through. She would reappear in the secret underground station of the American Guardian and The Freedom Train.

"Preparing upload," said the Conductor. "Cargo secured," it added, and in the funeral car, a flash of light swallowed the Crossing Guard's coffin, sending it to the hero's headquarters.

International Space Station

"Commander Redd," said one of the astronauts aboard, "This is Sun. We're getting strange readings from the AMS-02 and the BEAM."

"Are you certain, Bo?" asked the commander.

"Yes sir. The readings are like--" but before the astronaut could finish, a tesseractuality opened up outside of the station, and ejected The Freedom Train into space. For a few seconds, it sailed as straight as if on a track, and then began silently twisting and tumbling. The cars wrenched free of each other as they went, suddenly disgorging Silverbacks when the end of the middle car tore off. "Royal..," started Bo, then he corrected with, "uh ...sir? What the hell is that?"

"Something you'll only see once," said the commander. "Keep watch- make sure it continues away from us."

"Yes, sir."

The Guard Station

"Download complete," stated the Conductor. "Are you here, Miss?"

"I'm here, Conductor," answered Guardian Angel. "Contact the Richmond National Cemetery. We need to finish this funeral."

"Yes, Miss."

Gorilla Grotto

"Our agents have failed, Alpha," grunted an ape.

Sitting on a stone throne, the right half of his chest and right arm covered in cybernetic metal, The Alpha let out a low growl. Crushing the right arm of the throne in his grip, he huffed angrily, and said, "Then we wait. The Cyborgorillas will have our day. We will conquer Earth. And America will be the first to fall."

Please let me know what you think, and thanks! -cbOriginally Presented In: CCC #76.

The Origins Behind the Origins (or how some of these characters got their names):

The Alpha (with Cyborgorillas and Gorilla Grotto)

There were a few variations of gorilla-themed characters before I finally landed on The Alpha. Originally, I kind of went Planet of the Apes, and started with a couple of gorillas that were experimented on, giving them sentient intelligence. I eventually abandoned that for a lead gorilla named Silverback, but within a few years, that name started popping up all over comics. How I got to the Alpha is a bit convoluted, being pieced together from a few different ideas.

I have an overpowered character that may never see the light of day, and the basis of his powers was an armor with multiple abilities. He came about for a story I wrote in any "free subject" entries for my journal in my eighth grade English class in the 1980's. Short story is: the guy had to go through a labyrinthine complex, fighting foes and picking up pieces of the armor as he went. Each piece gave him a different power. A piece that went to the armor's helmet was called The Alpha Band, and it granted multiple psychic abilities. Its name was based on "alpha band oscillations" and "alpha waves" - references to brain activity.

In trying to straighten out the name problems with the ape character, I thought about how silverbacks will fight for dominance, the alpha male winning out. "Alpha male" made me think of "Alpha Band," and I thought who better to wear it than the alpha male gorilla (who would of course be a silverback, but it just wouldn't be his name)? And how can he be alpha without other gorillas? And what better name for him than just The Alpha?

So, the history is that The Alpha was the test subject for a found device called The Alpha Band. It increased his intelligence, and gave him telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Pyrokinesis and other abilities may yet be undiscovered. He uses the Alpha Band to increase the intelligence of multiple troops of gorillas, and they lived in a secret city accessed through a cave, known as Gorilla Grotto. That's very Gorilla City though, so I tweaked it a little bit, making Gorilla Grotto an extradimensional space.

Now, the Cyborgorillas were originally mentioned in The Fraternity of Heroes: The Inside Man. Mentioned, and that was it. Obviously, the name is just a mash-up of "cyborg" and "gorillas." When I was writing The Last Ride of the Freedom Train, I needed two things: a bad guy to fight the Guardian Angel, and a quick way for the Guardrail to traverse the train tracks. Teleportation via tesseract (a concept I [and probably Marvel] pinched from A Wrinkle in Time) was my answer to the travel, and tesseract made me think of the extradimensional space of Gorilla Grotto. If that space is reached via tesseract, then I had a reason for the two to fight.

That seemed a little overly technological for gorillas though, so I figured I might as well go all the way with it, and make them cybernetically enhanced. That made me think of the name Cyborgorillas again, and since I was connecting them to a character formerly named Silverback, it made sense to me that their enhancements would get them the nickname of Silverbacks. And that's how The Alpha became leader of the Cyborgorillas.

Making their motivation the conquering/ eradication of humanity came about as I was writing the story. I started thinking about what they wanted, and decided if it was tesseract technology that made me connect them, maybe that's what they were after. Gorilla Grotto was in one place, but the Guardrail traveled all over the country. Maybe they wanted access to that. Why though? On the spot, I decided that Silverbacks could be the enemy that everyone loves to hate- my modern day replacement for Nazis and terrorists. So if they're the big bads, then they must want to conquer/ eradicate humanity. Yes! I knew that had to be it. It still needs a little tweaking to keep it from being Planet of the Apes, but I'll get to that in due time.

The Guardian Angel (with The Crossing Guard, Guardrail, Guard Station, Rail Pass, Flaming Sword, and The Conductor)

The Guardian Angel was originally created as a male. He had mutli-colored energy wings and energy powers. The powers were given to him by two hooded, blue-robed creatures- an idea I totally stole from an episode of He-Man*. I know, I know... it's awful. The whole idea is awful. (*Jan 2, 2024: Negator, powered by Nerbs. Thank you, Wiki Grayskull.)

Eventually, the idea morphed into something else. I recalled a group called the Guardian Angels that was originally formed to combat violence on New York City subways- something I learned about in the 1980's from a cop show called Hill Street Blues. So, what if I made my character a guy that gets around by train?

I didn't come up with the train's teleportation system- the Rail Pass- until I started writing The Last Ride of The Freedom Train, so at first The Guardian Angel was restricted to one city. I never set it to print, but I'd always figured New York City or Washington, D.C., leaning towards D.C. He traveled via a special train called the Guardrail, and obviously he operated from the Guard Station. And I couldn't help myself- there was even a Guarddog.

So, when Batkevin74 came up with "Train Robbery" as the theme for CCC #76, The Guardian Angel was the only train-related character I had at the ready. I needed a flashier name than Guardrail though. I thought of the Freedom Train- a train I got to see in 1976- and the name was just too perfect.

It didn't seem like a name that went with Guardian Angel though. "American Guardian" maybe. I didn't want to jump right to that name though, and I didn't want to kill off The Guardian Angel either. So, I searched my character list for more "Guard" names, and came upon The Crossing Guard. I'd always seen him as some kind of interdimensional guardian, so that seemed like a good fit for this story. In context, it makes the name seem kind of Golden Age. Still, it didn't seem flashy enough to go with Freedom Train. So I contrived a way that The Crossing Guard became nicknamed The American Guardian, and away I went.

I still had the problem that I wanted to introduce The Guardian Angel. So I introduced Crossing Guard's sidekick daughter- a character I made up for this story. She inherits everything from her father, but loses the Freedom Train (but that can always be rebuilt). I gave her an energy weapon as a nod to my original version's energy powers, and called it a Flaming Sword based on the angel and the flaming sword that was set to guard Eden after Adam & Eve were kicked out.

I couldn't let her face the Silverbacks alone though, so I gave her The Conductor for help. The Conductor was one of the earliest characters on my list, and was originally an orchestra conductor with electrical powers that he focused through his conductor's baton. That guy surely still exists in the Golden Age of my characters, but I appropriated the name on the fly for the A.I. that controls the train based on "train conductor." Having him implement the "shock and awe" tactic was a nod to the electrical powers of my orchestra character.

balloons made from potato skins

Sometimes, I just come up with silly stuff as I'm writing. One of the particular times that happens is when I'm writing TV personalities- especially the news crew. I am not a fan of the news in general, because I hate the stupid things they find to talk about just to fill up time. I generally see the press as a bunch of self-important glory hounds, more concerned with their air time than with actually reporting the news.

So while doing a special report, I had Paige Webb mention the brass band and balloon release that started the train's journey. Then I thought about reports that balloon releases sometimes wind up killing birds, and I figured that seemed like a cause that some hippie environmentalist in California might go to some extreme to fix. So I came up with the most hippie-like thing I could think of, and that's how we got a silly piece of trivia about balloons made from potato skins.

There's absolutely no science behind that. I didn't read some strange clickbait article about it. That's just straight out of my head. Scary, right? I still need a name for these balloons, because it's something so stupid I just have to use it again somewhere.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading. -cb :^D
