I love and hate my job. It is great if it wasn’t for the people, the low pay and my boss. Take that out and I’m in heaven. I work at Supermarine Spitfire which is a weird cool name for a music store here on Monmouth Road just down from the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Water Park.
My boss who is also the owner is Jerry Rawlings. He hired me about eight years ago to sort albums into alphabetical order. In my years I went from mindless back of house drone to store manager. Spitfire became my own little kingdom, like Empire Records but less stealing, head shaving or Rex Manning.
I organized Nichromite to do an instore signing. This was just as they hit it big with An Understanding of Ourselves, the album with all the Lego heads on the cover, which made it all so much cooler! Gramsci Battalion thanked the store on their album All Before One and the drummer, Walter Martos, thanked me personally in his blurb. It’s all in the liner notes.
Jerry comes and goes as he pleases. It’s great when he’s not here because the store becomes mine. When he’s here it’s like a lurking troll who has lost his bridge. He attempts to help, has no idea where things belong. For example, he put Marooned On Mars’ album Based On A Dare in the metal section based purely on the cover. They’re like a slicker version of 80’s Norwegian sensation a-ha. When he’s here I’m not myself.
“Why does this mouse spider have nine legs?” Jerry asked as he held up an album by Sharpen Up.
“Artistic license?” I shrug. Just go away old man.
“Any good?”
I grunt and go back to repricing the Gangwon albums, K Pop had taken off in the States.
“You wanna buy the store off me?”
I roll my eyes at Jerry and groan before realizing what he’s said. It was just a natural reaction to him.
“You serious?”
Jerry nodded. “I think it’s time I moved on. This place has been good to me, and I know you’d look after it.”
To be added to later...

This was just some rambling writings based on some fake albums created by myself, @cbishop and some others on Facebook. The albums, whilst fictional, are owned by their creators and were first published on Facebook.
