Well, it is time to get things together for one of my more recent projects. That project is the adaptation called The Modern Day Casanova. It is an adaptation of one of the more famous, or infamous, depending on your viewpoint, game, Leisure Suit Larry. If you are unfamiliar with it, the original series was made by Sierra in the 1980's and 1990's, and ran in a similar format to many of its other franchises, relying on the player to think their way through the game. Given its content, which is in turn, a spoof on the dating lifestyle, it is easy to understand why it is controversial. When it was sold, however, all of its games list themselves as humorous adult endevours.
Now, for all it is worth, the game does fit several standard stereotypes, but look at the series protagonist. Larry Laffer is out of touch with the times, and that is because he was a serious introvert, or stereotypical nerd. Living with his mother until the ripe old age of almost forty, he was socially inept, and seriously out of touch with the real world. That is, of course, until he has the proverbial mid-life crisis. Being out of touch with reality, he sets forth in his adventures.
When the game was first made, the creator, Al Lowe, reportedly based Larry off a co-worker. That co-worker would brag about his encounters, and that, plus Al's own experiences from playing in clubs and lounges, inspired the game. In the game, you guide Larry to achieving success in the dating world, and when you take his ineptness in stride with the usual outcomes of his encounters, and that means that through out his dating career, he had been publicly humiliated multiple times, found himself hoodwinked, had his hopes dashed, and on rare occasions that he might have found the one, they figure out he's not worth the time.
His own pathetic nature could be seen as an esteem boost to someone who was socially backwards as myself, and as it turned out, he served as an inspiration for me when it came to searching for someone before I met my wife. Larry still holds a place in my heart, since I came to the conclusion long ago that if he could manage to score, I could as well. While I never was the swinging single like he tried to be, I doubt I would have had the courage to even ask my wife out had it not been for Larry, and his outlandish luck, and life style.
