1939, Manchester.

The plopping noises started to stop after awhile... maybe Steve Rogers had grown death. Perhaps deafness was an after effect of the Serum... or maybe the red stream of brains, bone and eyeballs had been punched so much they could no longer make any wet plopping sounds... either way Steve's fist was becoming broken and bloody.

"Mr Rogers." Steve raised his fist backwards to land another blow into the grotesque puddle forming beneath him. "Rogers!" Another blow... but the voice began to grow louder. Steve chose to ignore it. "STEVE!"

2014, 20 Miles above the Atlantic Ocean.

Captain Steve Rogers bolted up in surprise, his head clanged against the cramped compartment of the S.H.I.E.L.D. VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing vehicle). It had stealth capabilities, tactical maneuvering and packed a wallop that could make Stark Tech pale in comparison... but it seemed to have sacrificed its comfort for each of these features. The cabin area was cramped, and while at this current moment there were only two people on board the Aircraft, Steve didn't want to know how 12 people dressed in heavy combat gear would handle the situation. The comfort was fine though... Steve was comfortable in any situation. He rubbed the back of his head and looked up at the Agent who'd been calling his name.

"Sorry Ma'am." Steve said smartly. "Must've dazed off." He didn't look dressed for combat... but it wouldn't take him long to get prepared. Not with the new biological armour that the S.H.I.E.L.D. Tech boys had been working on. It was still in the prototype stage... but hopefully it would pass its combat training with flying colours. The Agent sat across from him tilted her head slightly. She wasn't wearing bio armour... instead she had opted for standard issue S.H.I.E.L.D. gear. Light weight... but it would take a shot or two if the wearer was hit.

"You looked like you were having a nightmare." She pointed out. The girl seemed smart... this was the first time the two of them had worked together on an operation... and it was the first time they'd ever met. Steve realized he hadn't asked her name.

"Not a nightmare Ma'am." Steve corrected politely. "Just a bad memory." Silence followed. The only exception being the hum of the VTOL. She was probably expecting him to explain what the memory was about... but he didn't want to. "What's your name?" He asked to end the silence.

"It's classified." She answered. "Sorry Captain but you'll just have to refer to me as Agent 13 like everyone else." Steve nodded just as the red alarm above their heads flashed a bright yellow twice. They were close to the drop zone, carefully he stood up and pulled his shield down from the Container it was residing in.

Laced with Adamantium and forged with a metal of unknown origin, all Steve knew about the metal was that after 70 years of use the shield hadn't even been scratched. He tapped the star on his chest and the black substance covering his body molded into what appeared to be sleek blue chain mail.

"Looks good." Agent 13 commented before pulling her weapons from their own container. A small sharp knife and a pistol with a red dot sight attached to the top. "No gun?" She asked. "I thought you were a soldier." Steve smiled slightly.

"I'm not a soldier Ma'am." The red light flashed green... and the loading ramp opened up. "I'm a Super Soldier."

"We don't need heroes in this war, son." President Roosevelt said calmly from behind his desk. "
What we need... is soldiers."

Steve shifted nervously in his seat, the Serum had taken it's time to kick in... but it had most definitely done its job. The first month after the project Steve was already at Olympian Athlete levels. By the fourth month he'd begun to slow down slightly... but the other day he had lifted a car into the air like it was nothing.

"Well... sir. I was hoping to be a bit of both." The President couldn't help but smile.

"You should leave the hero thoughts to the people back in New York." Roosevelt said gently. "Have you ever heard of the Human Torch?"

"Yes sir."

"Good... I like him... Anyway, son. You should try to be a hero in your own way. Do your job. Save lives." There was a logic behind the President's words... but it wasn't what Doctor Erskine would have wanted. Steve fished a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it over to the President.

"If I cant be a hero sir... then let me be a symbol."

"A symbol?" The President frowned as he stared at Steve's small sketches and drawings on the paper. "A symbol of what?"

Steve had rehearsed this line more then once.

"Sir. I want to be a symbol of America."

Hmm interesting. I wonder if this will become a 'make Iron Man look like a jerk' story? One way to tell, and that's to keep reading, something I plan to do.

@uncanny_xfactor

Thanks. I know there wasn't really any action in this issue however I wanted it to really set up the series and lay the tone for what Cap will be going through.

@tommythehitman: "maybe Steve Rogers had grown death" Ummm maybe grown deaf as you continue on with sounds.

"Must've dazed off." Ummm does he have a concussion? I think you mean dozed

She wasn't wearing bio armour... instead she had opted for standard issue S.H.I.E.L.D. gear. Light weight... but it would take a shot or two if the wearer was hit. Personally I don't get why you put these extra long pauses instead of commas. Doesn't make sense to me anyways.

It was okay, if you took out all the pictures this is only about 4 paragraphs which for you is kinda short.

@batkevin74

Yeah it was a bit shorter then I'm used to. In my defense though I wrote it pretty quickly... and five seconds before I had to go to sleep.

@tommythehitman: It's not a CCC contest where you've got a deadline. I get you're excited by your new idea but sometimes, just maybe you should go to bed and start it afresh in the morning. A bit of time will make it better instead of just churning out stuff because you feel you have too
