A man is hiding inside a small closet. He's very uncomfortable, but he doesn't even notice it. On the other side of the closet door, in the adjacent room, he hears moans. Looking down at his clenched fists, the man admires the long blade he is holding. How could she do this to him? How could she...? She will pay. Both of them will pay for their sins. They'll pay with their lives. And he opens the closet door with a scream full of rage.

A girl is swimming. The lake is still. There is barely any wind, and the cold water feels good on her skin. Suddenly, she feels ripples, waves in the lake's waters. Wasn't she alone...? It's dark, she can't quite make out the new person's silhouette, but whoever it is, they are coming toward her. She backs away, the person goes underwater. All is still again. The night is silent. All of a sudden she is grabbed by her left leg, pulled underwater. Two hands are holding her shoulders underwater. She is panicking, she can't hold her breath much longer. She can't. She's gonna... die.

A boy wakes up as his bedroom door is kicked open. A man wearing a mask walks in. He is holding a gun, pointing it towards him. The boy screams for his daddy, he starts crying. The man mutters something in a low, scary voice but the boy can't make out the words. He's so scared. Where is his daddy? He's so scared. Then the man shouts something. The boy sobs even louder. The man pulls the trigger. There is a bang. So loud. There's blood on the boy's hands. Where is his daddy...?

Maddison wakes up with a start. Her heart is beating furiously. She's out of breath, drenched in sweat. She looks around, notices that the sun is high up in the sky, outside the window. She yawns tiredly as she gets out of bed, taking a minute to get the horrible images out of her head.

Somehow she had a feeling this was gonna be a bad day.

Maddison closed the beautiful mansion's door behind her and sighed. She took a moment to admire the beauty of the place, then turned around and walked away. She had to find another place to live. After all, the ghost she had tracked to that very mansion may have been living alone, but his family would surely do something with the huge house now that he was dead, especially since his funerals would be held today.

For three years now, Maddison had been living in abandoned houses, all of which she had learned about through ghosts she had encountered. Sometimes she would do them a favor in exchange for using their deserted homes, such as telling the ghost's family a message, other times she'd just squat dead people's houses out of necessity, no matter whether they were okay with it or not. Maddison's life was, to say the very least, unorthodox.

As she walked away from the mansion, Gloom felt cold raindrops on her skin. Looking up, she saw that the whole sky was covered in dark clouds. Predicting that the rain would only get worse, Maddie waved her hand and, in it, appeared a large, weightless umbrella made out of pure shadow. Satisfied, she made her way up to the town's market, humming a slow, sad song as she walked.

Once inside the market, Maddison walked slowly down every single alley. Once she saw something she wanted, she simply wrapped it in shadows and teleported it to the darkness of the inside of her backpack. Gloom was about to steal some apples when her eyes filled with bright, white light.

A man with a red coat was walking down a dark alley, in a small, dark street. He started running because of the rain. Suddenly, another man, this one with a black trench coat, entered the alley and ran after him. He caught up with the first man and grabbed him by his shirt. He mumbled something that Gloom could not quite make out. A moment later, he had taken out a knife and had stabbed his victim with it. The stabbed man let out a cry of pain. Blood was all over his coat, all over his hands. But... it shouldn't be this way... this felt... wrong.

Maddison came back to her sense and gasped. Whispers turned to screams inside her head, the Voice of millions of Dead warning her at once that she must act. Her mind rushing, Gloom half-ran out of the market, as she did so, she bumped into a man who didn't even look at her. She stared confusedly at the man. He was wearing a red coat. Uncertain, Gloom quickly followed the man, who had turned left into a small alley. Almost right after him, another man, wearing a black trench coat, went inside the alley. Panicking, Maddison rushed after him. The man with the black coat ran after the other one. He grabbed him by his shirt, mumbled something and pulled a knife out of his pocket. At once, Gloom sprung into action. After all, the man with the red coat did not have a Death Aura around him, his time had not come. This was wrong.

The knife was suddenly surrounded in shadows. Before the attacker could do anything, it flew out of his hand, several meters away. The man turned around, swearing loudly. The next thing he knew, his entire body was also surrounded in shadows and her felt himself being flung backwards. He knocked his head into a wall and passed out. The other man, however, stared at Gloom with admiration.

"Thank... th-thank you!"

Without a word, Maddison stepped back into the shadows of the alley and disappeared.
