EMERALD LEGACY PART-1
SPACE TWO WEEKS AGO
What events lead to the destruction of an entire planet? Would it have been massive tectonic shifts? Would it have been a collision with a large outside body such as an asteroid? Perhaps the Sun that was supporting it going nova. Then there are unnatural events. Tampering with their ecology caused the destruction of Krypton. Rann was almost destroyed by the monster Gravyn. What about the planet called OA?
What happens when the planet that had been the source of hope for the cosmos explodes? A planet that had contained the energy for a legion of Space cops. For millennia the planet had held the energy inside. Regulating it to the members of this Corps through a Central Power Battery built by an ageless race not even from OA. What happens to the energy? Science states that energy, like matter, can neither be created nor destroyed. So what happens when just one man with a ring releases a planet sized energy in one massive explosion of willpower.
Perhaps that energy would begin to coalesce into a solid form. Maybe that form would begin to take on a shape. Might that shape take the form of the races it had most interacted with? Humanoid, perhaps? As the energy grasped into the depths of space to remain in existence, it would become "alive". And maybe, just maybe after gaining life the form would choose a sexual orientation? Maybe taking on a female shape. It makes sense females are the mothers of each of the respective races.
And then this "lady" would search to identify herself. While simply an energy source, she had been in contact with several races, which bore several names. But never had any race affected her as the Maltasians had. Perhaps the name they used. Yes she was Guardian.
EARTH TWO WEEKS AGO
Kyle Rayner had a problem. Make it two problems, one complicated the other. The package he had been holding before the impact contained several sheets of work he had just finished hours before. And now in order to deliver it he had to catch it before it toppled into the ocean. And to catch it he had to go through the man standing in the air before him.
But things were not as complicated for Kyle as they seemed. A beam of emerald energy lanced out from the jewel on his right hand grasping the package falling far below, as he looked the attacker, he knew too well, in the eye.
"Dr. Light I presume?"
The figure clad in black and white answered by lancing a blast of energy towards Kyle. The ring responded by instinct and surrounded Kyle in an emerald force field, yet never releasing his package. Some of the energy was redirected, the rest absorbed, converted and stored for future use in the ring. The ring Kyle wore as Green Lantern.
With a look of disgust on his face Kyle mumbled "Next time Wally delivers my stuff for me." A technically ornate gun formed in his right hand, which he used to point at Dr. Light.
"Fool!" Light bellowed. "I am pure light, no energy weapon you can form will hurt me."
Kyle smiled. The ring could do anything he willed it to, and now what he willed it to do surprised even Doctor Light, and impressed Kyle. He pulled the trigger and instead of the emerald energy beam Light expected to see, a solid crystal object shot towards him. It impacted in his chest and he felt himself begin to disperse as shards of his precious light began shooting out into the air in several directions.
Kyle watched as Dr. Light became a blinding rainbow light show before his eyes, as the crystal which had hit light started to fall, Kyle flew up and caught it in his hand. Looking at it as it sparkled in the setting sunlight he talked aloud to no one. "Should take Light a while to pull himself back together." Throwing the crystal over his shoulder so it would fall down into the Atlantic, he noticed he was directly over the sunken city of Atlantis. Laughing to himself he continued his flight from New York to Japan. " I wonder if Authur likes prisms?"
SPACE ONE WEEK AGO
Guardian had completely become a "living being". Her first order of business was to test her limits. After some time she discovered that while her physical form was limited to what had been the geographic confines of OA, she could send an energy duplicate of herself out to explore. This duplicate had some of her abilities, but weakened the longer it was away from her.
She had complete control over the energy that made up her body. She and found that even after she had completed her form, there was still some residual energy left over. Energy that was floating around what had been OA.
The moon had been mostly undamaged, so she mined it for material. She also used remaining debris of OA to form for herself a structure in which to live. This structure took on a shape not much unlike the original citadel on OA the Maltasians had built.
She then began to set about her next duty. Using minerals from the dead moon, she began to forge the first of what she planned to be a long line of artifacts. Her mind formed its shape, and when she was done she stored some of the residual energy in it. Then she constructed the second artifact. This would channel the energy from the first one into whatever it's bearer wished. Her first power ring and power battery were complete.
EARTH ONE WEEK AGO
"Damn!" Kyle blurted out, crumpling the sheet of paper before him. In a fit of near rage he tossed it across the room, and followed it with a blast of energy from his ring rendering it into atoms.
His outburst had scared Jennie half out of her chair. Had she still had her powers she would have been in full costume, and have erected a shield around herself by now. Looking at Kyle as he began to set his drafting table back up she asked. "Is everything alright?"
Kyle looked up to see a mixed look of concern and fear on the face of his roommate. Slowly he began to calm down. "Sorry Jen." He started. "This Tempest Enterprises account has me on the ropes." He gestured towards his desk. "Every time I think I nail down a design, I take a second look and hate it."
Jennie began to massage his shoulders. The two had become closer since their fight with the Starheart. She smiled as she felt his muscles relax under her hands. While she still slept on his couch, there was defiantly something growing between them. After a few minutes she whispered in his ear. "Tell you what Ring Boy." She used her nickname for him. "You take a break from that, and lets go get you some of Radu's special mix."
Kyle smiled and stood up, stretching as he did. "You always say the kindest things Jen." He went towards the alcove where he stored his battery. Jennie grabbed his arm.
"Oh no, no art, no 'Lantern, today you are Kyle Rayner, out on the town with the luckiest green skinned woman on Earth." She continued to drag him to the door. Together they went downstairs to Radu's.
STRIKERS ISLAND
The guards had made their last mistake. The regulations on Prisoner 134-765 were strict. The seal around his cell was to be checked every hour. Due to an overly high-staked game of poker, they had missed two of those checks.
That is how the sounds from their radio had filtered through a small crack in the seal. That is how prisoner 134-765 turned that sound into a beam of pure sonic force to blow his cell apart. It was the reason that the screams of their deaths only made him stronger. And now prisoner 134-765, alias Sonar, was ready to claim his kingdom of New York. And no damned green ringed freak or red suited speedsters were going to stop him.
RADU'S COFFEE SHOP
Kyle and Jennie sat at their usual table near the bar where they could still talk to Radu if he was interested. Sipping their respective drinks, both of them were surprised to catch themselves saying nothing.
Before either one of them could comment on it, Radu chimed in with his infinite wisdom. "So what are you two young ones going to do today?" He asked his accent as strong as ever.
Jennie answered first. "Kyle's taking a breather today. I'm going to force him to have fun."
Radu laughed just a little. "Yes Kyle, you are my favorite tenant I would be grieved if you died of boredom."
Kyle half glanced at his right hand and the ring that sat on his middle finger. "Somehow I doubt that will ever happen Radu."
SPACE NEW OA THREE DAYS AGO
She had detected it just before it began to move. A power ring she had not made, for she had only made one. This was one that the Maltasians had made. As she sent her energy form towards it, the ring did something rather odd.
It moved.
Not only did it move, but it expelled a beam of energy in its defense. Capturing a piece of the emerald rock floating near it, the ring and the rock jumped into hyperwarp before she could reach it.
"Yes that was very odd". Guardian thought.
STRIKERS ISLAND THREE DAYS AGO
"I don't know how to explain it GL." Warden Withers said to Kyle as they walked to where Sonar's cell had been. "The guards I had were top notch."
As they entered the foyer to Sonar's high security cell, Kyle, Green Lantern looked around. He spotted something out of the corner of his eye he asking sarcastically. "Really Warden," A thin beam of light floated to a corner solidified into a pair of tweezers and pulled out a king of hearts. "Top notch you say?"
The warden began to stammer but before he could complete a single sentence Kyle's ego took over.
"Don't worry." Kyle said adjusting the ring on his finger. "I brought him in once, I can do it again." With that Green Lantern phased through the roof and flew out into the New York skyline.
SPACE, KORUGAR ONE DAY AGO
The emerald ring dropped out of hyperwarp, slowly approaching the familiar planet. Thoughts of a man believed dead whirling inside the ring amidst a nimbus of energy. "Pathetic Fools." Ran the thoughts. "If I could possess their precious battery, they should have known it would be child's play to possess their ring." As the ring descended through the atmosphere of the planet, it began to search the planet, crisscrossing it several times at the speed of light, until it/he found the object of its/his search.
All the inhabitants of Korugar knew of the Green Lantern Corps. Two of the most noted Lanterns had come from here. One Famous, one Infamous. Now the farmer known as H'larn was shocked to see an emerald ring floating before him.
"You have been chosen." It spoke to him. A ring spoke!
"Chosen for what?" The man asked timidly.
Floating before him the ring spoke again, it's words appealing to H'larn's nature. "To continue the greatest legacy this planet ever had." The ring floated closer. "All you have to do is accept."
H'larn reached out slowly and grasped the ring. Slipping it on the third finger of his left hand, the last thing H'larn heard was the laughter of a devil.
As the ring settled into place, H'larn was enveloped in a nimbus of energy, the chunk of rock that the ring had been towing behind it dropping to the ground. Both began to undergo a transformation. H'larn fell to his knees in pain as his genetic code was rewritten from within. The rock also began to morph into a new shape, a wicked sharp pointed battery of power.
H'larn's mind was cast out into the void, and captured by the ring. As his body rose, the features of his face had been twisted as well. His lips snarled into an almost demonic wicked smile. His face now graced with a black "Fu man Cho" mustache. His hairline had receded just slightly. He reached for the handle of the battery. Drawing in breath as if it were a precious commodity, the new man spoke. Gone was the humble farmer, replaced by the almost shrill high-toned voice of confident evil
"They were fools to think that death would stop me!"
?
He had selected H'larn because his height and weight had been an exact match for his own. And now the most dangerous being in the galaxy roamed free once more. Now he was a match for anyone in his way.
"Now," Sinestro said. "There are no Guardians, nor a Hal Jordan to stop me!"
Laughter not heard for years, echoed off the surrounding mountains.
