Grayson: Year Zero

Dick Grayson, grieving the loss of his parents John and Mary and the death of his adopted parents Martha and Thomas Wayne, was being raised by the Waynes' butler Alfred Pennyworth who facilitated the young lad's education and etiquette training and also trained him in basic self-defense martial arts. Grayson grew up reading detective novels and became fascinated with urban crime in the modern age. His favourite crime detective was of course Sherlock Holmes and his favourite case-study was the elusive London serial killer Jack the Ripper who confounded Scotland Yard in the late 1800s.

Grayson was attending his senior year of a private school and preparing to enter the prestigious Ivy League school Dartmouth College in 2001. He was completing his high school thesis on the role of vigilantism in American jurisprudence which focused on the work and myths surrounding legendary American lawman Wyatt Earp. Grayson received high marks for his handsome thesis and was more resolved than ever to really study, explore, and understand vigilantism. Meanwhile, Alfred kept a keen eye on 'Master Dick' and subtly suggested to him that vigilantism study perhaps also required some on-the-field vigilante 'work.'

Dick was a solid student at Dartmouth College, earning a B+ overall average and completing his major in criminal psychology. He met a nice young woman while at Dartmouth named Barbara Grayson and they began an intimate relationship. Dick started telling Barbara about his troubled past and his secret fascination with American vigilantism. After graduating from Dartmouth, Dick travelled around Europe and promised Barbara they would get married when he returned.

It was in Europe that the precocious Dick Grayson became the famous Batman, a caped crusader unhesitant about pursuing society's most criminally insane terrorists and vandals. While in London, Dick studied a bit more about Jack the Ripper and met another student of the serial killer while at a library. This other criminal psychology 'fan' was Harvey Dent. Dent believed that Jack the Ripper revealed that vigilantism is an inherent feature of urbanization. Grayson questioned whether Harvey's radical stance on the hysteria of jurisprudence could lead to dangerous attitudes towards punishment. Before parting ways, Dent wrote Grayson a letter which read, "Beware the charms of Harley Quinn and Darkseid who are London's rising criminal maniacs!"

Grayson had fashioned himself a vigilante mask and cape and suit which resembled a bat and started calling himself Batman. Alfred kept in touch with Grayson by phone and email and knew of Dick's new secret vigilante identity. Grayson/Batman began patrolling London at night and stopped some random vandals and a masked creep who called himself Scarecrow. He met Harley Quinn who introduced herself as a 'crime journalist' and they had sex (Batman did not know that Harley was ordered by her criminal master the Joker to seduce Grayson/Batman). Batman then met a mysterious masked vigilante who called himself Darkseid. Batman remembered the warning from Harvey Dent about Harley Quinn and Darkseid but did not feel worried. Darkseid convinced Batman that he was seduced by Harley Quinn and that he should seek intimate relationships with more trustworthy female vigilantes. Darkseid suggested Batman befriend Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and Hawkgirl, three young female London college students who wore masks and prowled London as vigilantes every Halloween Eve. Batman found them the next Halloween and befriended them. The four of them engaged in various vigilante missions over the next three years and engaged in various levels of intimacy before Batman decided to travel to Spain.

In Spain, Batman met Talia al Ghul and Catwoman, two self-proclaimed eco-terrorists who convinced Batman to study the problems of eco-pollution and how these problems could be addressed with vigilantism. Batman felt that these two pseudo-heroes sounded too much like the radical Harvey Dent and suggested they part ways. Talia and Catwoman were enraged and drugged Batman who woke up the next morning in the custody of Darkseid. Darkseid had travelled to Spain to find Batman and was enraged that he did not work with Talia and Catwoman. Batman defiantly said, "I knew you were no good, Darkseid! I'll never become a terrorist!" What Batman did not know was that Darkseid was working with Talia and Catwoman to destroy Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and Hawkgirl.

After escaping the clutches of Darkseid, Batman travelled to Prague where he met two young boys named Jason Todd and Tim Drake who were training to become vigilantes. Jason and Tim called themselves the Red Robins, though Jason was the first Robin. Batman advised them that if they wanted to fight crime as vigilantes at such a young age, they needed to work together and seek assistance wherever it was available, since humility would protect them from the dangers of criminal insanity. Jason and Tim parted soon, believing their ways were no longer compatible. Tim was also jealous of Jason and resented that he was not the first Robin and went off on his own and in more radical ways. However, it was Jason who became a ruthless punisher and anti-hero, and Batman put Jason on his special 'villain list' which Alfred kept on file for him.

Batman then travelled to Berlin where he once again encountered Harvey Dent who had now fashioned a bizarre vigilante outfit of his own and was calling himself Two-Face. Harvey/Two-Face was scarred by Tim Drake's acid gun but managed to flee and then recruited Jason Todd as an ally. Batman was able to arrest Jason Todd and deliver him to Scotland Yard, but Two-Face was still on the loose and apparently chasing the surprisingly heroic Tim Drake who was now simply calling himself Robin. Batman received an anonymous tip (Batman guessed it was from Tim Drake) that Two-Face was hiding in a brewery and setting up an elaborate narcotics smuggling operation. When Batman burst into the brewery, he found Two-Face waiting there for him with Tim Drake as his hostage. Two-Face ordered Batman surrender himself or Drake would die. Batman quickly shot his boomerang which knocked Two-Face's pistol out of his hand and then wrestled the maniac to the ground and tied him up.

After delivering Two-Face to Scotland Yard, Batman parted ways with Tim Drake and invited him to visit him in Gotham City and perhaps help 'the dark knight' on future crusades as the heroic Robin. When Batman returned to Gotham, Alfred welcomed him home and Batman was ready to take on whatever came in his direction. Two months later, Batman received a letter from Barbara Gordon which read, "Dick, I'm glad you're back in Gotham. So much has changed. I've decided to become a masked vigilante (for the sake of all women), and I'm calling myself Batwoman. I hope you find me!" Grayson/Batman was ready for a life of vigilante machinations, and he resolved to find (and marry) Barbara/Batwoman.

@amalgamdcmarvel8: Why, WHY does Darkseid brainwash people to sleep with other people??

This is soft-core superhero porn fic. Which is fine but you can write it yourself

@amalgamdcmarvel8: I notice that you haven't written anything yourself, and looking at your rules I picked up a few grammer error, and that's the problem (rules not the grammar). This is your fan-fic, yet you can't, for whatever reason, seem to be bothered to write it yourself, so instead ask others to do it for you to your terms. Fan-Fic should be about writing your own tale to your own rules and prefrences, not bowing to those of another who doesn't have the gall to write themselves.

Spin-City: Folkloric Free Will

Woo, let's give AmalgamDCMarvel8 a change, his intentions seem noble, and I found his scenario surprisingly fertile for casting my Grayson/European-Batman pitch (Grayson: Year Zero). Give me props!

Ya know, it wasn't until Batman: The Animated Series (Fox TV) that mass audiences got the ironic grittiness that Robin offered the Dark Knight.

While Amalgam's pitch sounds a tad like pseudo-graffiti, there's room here for some nice Robin-esque daydreams.

Check out (for example --- shameless plug) my special-interest fan-fic about Arthurian storytelling (posted below). By the way, any NY Islanders fans here (NHL)?

Here's something we could do (IMO --- what do you think, ImpurestCheese?):

"Grayson/Batman in his early 40s discovers that his various meanderings have spawned a host of children from his trysts with Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, etc. etc. However, Darkseid seeks to use his offspring for his new fascist army. Grayson resolves to intercept Darkseid when Two-Face tips him off but then discovers that Two-Face betrays him and murders his wife Barbara Gordon. Grayson/Batman swears vengeance upon Darkseid, Two-Face, and all criminally insane nemeses of Gotham."

Well, I really like this thread, and I got a great idea from the author, so I'm going to use it to create the next chapter in this Grayson-Batman saga. My sister warns me that I'm exploring the 'dark side' of life (in my writing) too much, so this might be my last Fan-Fic, in which case, I'm just gonna say it's been a real joy writing on Comic Vine.

Chapter 2: The Carnage Cult

Grayson is sitting in his bat-cave and Alfred brings him some clam chowder. Grayson/Batman is studying the patterns of a new gang in Gotham City that is being called The Carnage Cult. The leader of this gang, a boxer-turned-cannibal named Pac demands that all inductees perform bizarre acts of grave-robbing and then cut up the body parts of the corpses to make artistic sculptures and ingredients for food which they serve at a feast every Friday evening (before the weekend mayhem begins).

Meanwhile, Darkseid is gloating in his chambers that Grayson/Batman has not yet captured him. Darkseid holds a terrible secret. It was he who planned the death of the Flying Graysons and not even the Waynes knew about it. Darkseid considers the diabolical possibility that his terrible deed, done as training for future acts of Gotham terror, perhaps spawned a vigilante deed by Batman and motivated Grayson to become restless. Darkseid plans eerily how to disclose this terrible secret to Grayson/Batman...when the time is right.

Grayson/Batman has a plan to infiltrate The Carnage Cult. He will bury himself in the cemetery where cult members plan to dig up new bodies for their bizarre activities. They will think he is a dead corpse and will transport him into their secret lair where he will emerge and do his best to take the cult apart. He follows through with the plan and even puts himself to sleep with pills so no one suspects he is conscious and alive, and he disguises himself with elaborate skin cosmetics and a fake beard so no one recognizes him. When Grayson/Batman awakes, he realizes he is in some kind of corpse holding chamber along with four other dead bodies and no one else is in the chamber. He hears two members of The Carnage Cult talking outside the chamber, in the next room in what seems to be a cave-like labyrinth.

"That one dead body, the man with the long black beard, looks a lot like that Gotham City socialite Dick Grayson," says one member.

"Maybe it's a relative of Grayson's. Who cares? Darkseid is here now talking with Pac. I think they're forming a plan to kidnap the mayor and use him for a cannibalistic ritual which they'll broadcast on a pirate TV signal," replies another member.

Grayson/Batman gathers his wits and senses. He pulls out his stun-gun which he kept hidden in his underwear. He breaks out of the chamber and subdues the two members who were talking in the next room.

"Darkseid plans to kidnap the mayor for a cannibalistic ritual with Pac, huh? Well, we'll see what we have to say about that. I have to announce myself as Dick Grayson's twin brother, so no one connects me with Batman."

Grayson/Batman roams around the labyrinth and finds Darkseid and Pac sitting at a table and drinking wine and laughing. He bursts in and lunges towards them and punches out Pac and then uses his stun-gun on Darkseid. Darkseid and Pac are both lying on the ground, shocked and disoriented.

"So you thought you two would just get away with a bizarre cannibalism scheme, eh? Well, I'm Dick Grayson's twin brother, Theodore, and I've been planning on how to catch you. I will call the GCPD and you'll be transported to Arkham, and I'm retiring and moving to Fiji! They'll call me a hero!"

Darkseid sneers and replies, "Maybe Grayson would like to know that I was the one who planned the death of the Flying Graysons. So even if you were a secret heroic twin brother of Dick, we'll see what the press thinks when they find out that an inmate of Arkham was responsible for the Grayson tragedy!"

Grayson/Batman is horrified and calms himself down and replies, "I'm sure Dick will discover that catching you and Pac honors the memory of the Flying Graysons!"

After Pac and his cult and Darkseid are transported to Arkham, Grayson/Batman wonders if the bloody trail of vigilantism will make madmen as well as saints in Gotham City. He drives home to find that Alfred is saying a prayer for the departed Barbara Gordon, Grayson's murdered wife. He comforts Alfred and reminds him (and himself) that the price of heroism may be exorcism. However, Grayson/Batman wonders if he himself has been scarred by the likes of life-betraying ghouls such as Pac and The Carnage Cult. As he looks at a photo of The Flying Graysons, he wonders why Darkseid would want to use human life to devise panic. Grayson prepares to go to sleep and comforts his mind by reading his favourite issue of Carnage (Marvel Comics).
