I want you to rob a train.

It's a simple idea and it's a recurring trope in TV, movies and books. And I'd like to see what YOU can do. No word limit and it can be in any genre. I've put in two links to websites one of train robbery movies and one which is a whole wikipedia page on train robberies if you need inspiration.

https://www.ranker.com/list/best-train-robbery-movies-list/all-genre-movies-lists

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_robbery

The contest begins today and lets keep it short, ends at 11.59pm on the 31st July 2018 SYDNEY AUSTRALIA time, which if you click this highlighted sentence, will tell you the time and how long you have left in relation to where you live.

So grab your guns, your pens, and put your plan into action! That train won't rob itself

And it needs an original character?

I'm probably out of this one. I have to find a job, or I might lose everything, including my place to live.

It was a lovely Monday on the island of Sodor, when the Fat Controller called a meeting of all the engines in Tidmuth sheds.

“Today is a big day,” He said. “We need one of you to undertake a special delivery.”

“That should be me,” Gordon declared. “I am the biggest and fastest engine on the island.”

“This is true,” said the Fat Controller. “But you don’t like shunting or manual labour, and this special delivery requires those things.”

“Oh the indignity,” Gordon moaned.

“I could do it,” wheeshed Thomas.

The Fat Controller scratched his chin as he thought. “Thank you Thomas, I think you will do nicely.”

“Well done, Thomas.” Percy said to his friend. “You’ll do great.”

“Thanks Percy,” Thomas replied.

“I will reassign Thomas’ normal duties amongst you others, so that there will be no delays on my network,” The Fat Controller declared. “Thomas, if you’d follow me into the engine shed please.”

The Fat Controller then explained to Thomas that he would be taking a secret shipment of old coins and notes from the Harwick Bank down to Brendam Docks for transportation to the mainland.

“This is very exciting!” Thomas exclaimed.

“You must be very careful, Thomas,” The Fat Controller warned.

Thomas’ boiler bubbled with excitement. “Yes sir!”

The Fat Controller patted Thomas’ boiler and headed off to tell the other engines their tasks. Thomas shunted his way off to Wellsworth Bank on the far end of the island.

__

Thomas could barely contain his excitement as the three plain red box cars were hooked up to him.

“Take good care,” said the Bank Manager to Thomas. “You are carrying a large amount of money.”

“Not to worry Bank Manager,” said Thomas. “It will be safe with me.”

Thomas slowly pulled out hauling his precious cargo. It was hard going as Harwick was at the top of the island and Brendam docks at the very bottom and the money was quite heavy. As he rounded the bend just out of Knapford Station Thomas slammed on the brakes as there was a large tree across the tracks.

“Well bust my bumpers!” Thomas declared. “This isn’t good.”

Then from the bushes beside the tracks stepped four men dressed in black and with striped tops wearing masks.

“Don’t bleeping move!” yelled the first robber pointing a gun at Thomas. “This is a bleeping robbery!”

Thomas’ driver reached for the radio only to be shot in the head. Thomas yelped and the body fell onto the ground.

“Play it smart, Thomas!” Another robber declared.

“And nobody else gets bleeping hurt!” said another. Thomas didn’t know what to do. He quivered and shook, his bolts rattling, his water bubbling over inside his boiler like an angry kettle. The four robbers boarded Thomas and uncoupled the cargo.

“Why are you doing this?” Thomas demanded.

“Shut the bleep up!” A robber dumped a bucket of water inside Thomas’ furnace, knocking him out.

__

When Thomas awoke he was surrounded by police officers, The Bank Manager, and The Fat Controller, who was looking very disappointed.

“What happened Thomas?” The Fat Controller asked.

Thomas burst into tears and relayed the entire story. He was quite distressed. Some of the engineers put a calming blanket across Thomas’ face

“I can only apologise,” The Fat Controller said to the Bank Manager.

“If only Thomas’ driver had played it smart,” The Bank Manager said, which made Thomas’ eyebrows raise. It was the same voice as one of the robbers. He was so shocked he could barely speak plus the blanket was choking him. “I shall now head to Brendam Docks and catch the ferry back to the mainland to tell the banks main branch of the robbery. I hope I have a job when I arrive.”

Thomas helplessly watched as the Bank Manager strode away.

The End

The Struggle

The engineer of the train tried to keep it steady as it chugged towards its destination. It had been weeks since he had it running, and now that it was running, it was missing one passenger. While that was a blow, it didn‘t mean the end of the run. He‘d just need a way to replace that passenger while the train made its run through the land.

To most, the landscape the train passed through would appear odd, but it was the usual route the train took. It passed through woods, plains, and past different cities. Sometimes, it passed an ornate castle, and even a futuristic structure. The engineer was used to it, since he knew the usual cargo on the train.

No Caption Provided

As the train chugged on, one of the two passengers on the train, a young redhead who looked in her twenties at the moment, approached him. For this train, that wasn't uncommon. She smiled at him, and said, "Nice to see this train is running again."

He nodded, looking back at the other passenger, a young blonde girl in her early teens, or preteens, quietly playing a 3DS. She appeared content, even though the seat next to hers was empty. He then responded to the redhead's statement. "Aye, it is. The train was out for a bit, but now it is back. It is a slow process, but nice to see most of the usual cargo."

The redhead nodded, and looked back. "Yes. I was checking things out. Game show sets, blackboards with mathematical equations, and some things from my school. It is a good sign."

The engineer nodded in agreement, but with what had happened in the past few days, he was also staying alert. This was a delicate time, and there were those he knew would want to detail this train. This train offered something more valuable than anything else out there, and it needed to get to the station.

All of a sudden, a panicked sound pierced the quiet of the surroundings. He looked off in the direction it appear to come from, and he saw them. It was a quartet of figures, the apparent leader cloaked, and decked in black. It was them. Each one road their own steed which kept up with the train. That wasn‘t a good sign.

He turned back to the redhead, shouting, “Get in the…” The words stuck in his mouth. The redhead had reverted to the form he had first seen her in. A silent, more slender girl, who hands were as sharp as knives. She would be in no shape to get the other to safety. He glance at the other passenger, and to his horror saw that the girl had transformed into that of a baby in a carrier.

He turned his attention back to the course ahead of him, and to his horror, the sky had darkened. The panicked cry got louder, the same word repeated over and over in a hysterical tone. It filled him with dread. This didn‘t need to be happening now. This train needed to complete its run. It needed to get back to the station.

All of a sudden, he heard footsteps behind him. At first, he thought the redhead had recovered, but he heard more steps behind him. He glanced back, and gasped as he was forced away from the controls. The cloaked figure had bored the train as swiftly as they had appeared. While he couldn‘t see their face, their voice was a mixture of male and female. “This train isn‘t right. The cargo needs to go.”

He tried to protest, but the one that was making the panicked cry wouldn‘t stop, and fear started to take over him. A glance over at his passengers only made it worse. The redhead was now cowering as the third of a group, a tall menacing figure wearing some sort of mask, and whose hands had mouths on them loomed over her. The other passenger, still in the form of a baby in a carrier, was being picked up by some faceless individual dressed as some sort of government official. It was a nightmare.

He closed his eyes, and he felt tears coming. He had failed. The train‘s cargo would be ruined. The passenger‘s all gone, who knew what their fate would be, but it wouldn‘t be good. It started to overwhelm him, causing the hijacker to laugh more. This was going to cause great distress to the owner of the station, if and when the train arrived.

As his eyes were closed, he heard another voice speak, one he hadn‘t heard in weeks. It was that of the missing passenger. He heard her say, “Now I know you are better than this.” The engineer opened his eyes, and while he was still seeing the cloaked, black clad figure issuing ordered, and a dark hue taking over his train, he saw another figure. It was indeed the missing passenger, looking radiant in a wedding dress. She was also translucent, a literal spirit. As he looked at her, she smiled, and he felt better. “I‘m sorry I had to go, but I know you can handle this. You have to protect her now.” He knew she was right, and in that moment, everything started to change.

The panicked cry stopped, and the figure that had been making it clutched at its throat. This caused all the other figures to pause. He then saw the leader turn to face him, and while he still couldn‘t see their face, he could tell they were shocked. In that moment of shock, the engineer took his chance, and uppercutted the figure, sending them flying into the air.

This caused the other two figures to drop their targets and back away. The redhead reverted back to the form he saw her in most now, as did the baby. The engineer, full of faith in himself, physically grabbed those to and hurled them off the train, which was now taking on a scarlet hue.

The figure that had made the panicked cry tried once more to make a sound, but the engineer grab him, and brought the figure face to face with him. As it tried to work its mouth, the engineer looked into the face that was his own, and said, “GET OFF MY TRAIN.” He then hurled the figure, and the train picked up steam, moving with a speed it hadn‘t seen for a long time.

As it did so, the passengers spoke to one another again, both greeting the spirit of the second passenger. He retook control as the redhead said, “He finally remember. You were missed.” The young preteen nodded, and the redhead said, “Are you retaking the center seat?”

He glanced back to see the spirit shake her head, and then motion to the preteen. “It‘s hers now. She‘s the most important one. It is still our job to inspire, but she‘s the most important one, especially for the next few years.” He nodded, and even the redhead nodded. That one was the most important, and it fueled not only him, but the train as well.

Eventually, the train pulled into the station, to be prepared for its next run as another train departed. The owner, the engineer knew, would be feeling better now.

Elsewhere, the owner of that station left his job that day feeling better. The loss of his wife was still fresh to him, and he still worried about how to provide for his daughter. He now felt better, as he realized that his wife‘s spirit would be looking out for them. It would be a trial, and they would come through it. They were just now starting to redefine normal with out that important figure in their lives.

(This is more than story, and I thank @batkevin74 for suggesting this theme. I would detail this more, but he did put a short time limit on it. This is also not proofread, but I have a bit of faith in this entry, for obvious reasons.)

The Last Ride of The Freedom Train

The light-haired woman with the taser moved carefully through the abandoned factory, stalking her latest quarry. Close behind her were Brian and Maurice, her partners in the chase, and Tabby, the camerawoman. Currently, the view from the camera was just the back of their heads, and little else in the darkened space. The camera was filming with a night lens, so everything looked a pale, glowing shade of green. Suddenly the leader held up a fist, signalling for everyone to stop. "Shh! Do you hear that?"

The group went silent, and they looked all around, though clearly not seeing anything specific. "All I hear is a dripping sound Dani," said Brian.

"Yeah, that," she confirmed. "That's City Slicker! It's coming from the tank in the corner. Let's--"

"--We interrupt this episode of Danika Sedova: Bounty Hunter Babe for this special report." The announcer's words are accompanied by the logo for the Larsen Channel Seven News.

"Good evening. I'm Phillip Thyme..."

"...And I'm Paige Webb..."

"...And we're bringing you this special report following the progress of the journey home for the body of the fallen hero known as The American Guardian, or as he called himself, The Crossing Guard," says Phillip. "He of course became known as The American Guardian when the President recognized his role in stopping the Cyborgorillas- cybernetically enhanced sentient apes seemingly bent on the destruction of humanity- also known as Silverbacks due to those metallic enhancements. Dedicated to protecting America from interdimensional threats, The Crossing Guard drove them back into their dimensional space known as Gorilla Grotto- the highlight of a career spent criss-crossing America via railroad.

"His train, the Guardrail- also known by its popular nickname of The Freedom Train- served as a mobile headquarters for the hero for decades. It may not seem like the fastest way to travel the country, but thanks to a teleportation system called a tesseractuator- or more commonly the Rail Pass- the Freedom Train can be virtually anywhere in the country in a blink of light, and the blink of an eye, by passing through a system of tesseracts."

"The Freedom Train will be taking a somewhat slower route today," reports Paige, "making stops across the country, allowing mourners to view the body, currently laid out in repose in a special funeral car. It's reported that the Crossing Guard's daughter and former sidekick, known as The Guardian Angel, will be travelling with the train to escort her father to his final resting place.

"Driving the train of course is The Conductor- the android intelligence that directs the Freedom Train, communicating with GPS satellites and sensors specially commissioned for the International Space Station to ensure that its travels via Rail Pass don't interfere with other trains."

"Paige," Phillip says calmly, "We're now receiving word that the Freedom Train is pulling out of the station in San Francisco Bay."

"Oh, look at that!" Paige exclaims happily. "The Freedom Train departs with the fanfare of full brass bands and a red, white, and blue balloon release! Wow, look at that! You might be interested to know that the balloons used in this farewell ceremony are made of a special material derived from the skins of potatoes. As they ascend into the atmosphere, they will gradually begin to shred, and fall back to Earth. They are completely biodegradable, posing no threat to soil, waterways, or wildlife."

"That's good to know," Phillip says somberly. "The Freedom Train is of course the third train to bear this name; the previous two having operated in the 1940's and 1970's, displaying items of national importance to the public. Freedom Train Three will only travel a quarter mile before making its first jump via Rail Pass, and... oh, there it goes now," he says as the screen shows a bright flash of light on the tracks that swallows the short, five-car train. "We now switch you to Cheyenne, Wyoming- the first stop for the Freedom Train on this funeral tour for an American hero. Standing by on scene is Mike Rofon. Mike?"

Cheyenne, Wyoming

"Phillip," Mike responds, "using the Rail Pass, the journey from San Francisco Bay to here in Cheyenne will only take about ten seconds. As you can see on the track behind me, the tesseractuator is already opening a portal- known as a tesseractuality- so the Freedom Train will be arriving in moments," Mike says with a smile as he turns to watch the track.

As the Freedom Train roars into view at the end of the train station's platform, a second tesseractuality opens at the platform's opposite end. Flashes of light can be seen through the windows of the train's middle car, and as the second portal receives the train, a body crashes through one of the windows. It is severed cleanly just below the shoulders as it passes over the edge of the portal. The body disappears with the train, and the head and shoulders crash and roll on the platform, producing screams from people nearby in the crowd.

"Phillip, we're not sure what's going on here," shouts Mike as he shoulders through the fleeing bystanders, closely followed by his cameraman. Panting with the exertion, he says, "As you saw, the Freedom Train blew through this stop, and what appeared to be a body was ejected from the train. We're getting through now, and it's--"

The camera focuses on the head and shoulders, and Phillip says, "It's a gorilla."

"Not just a gorilla, Phillip," reports Mike. "This ape has a cybernetic eye. Phillip, it looks like Cyborgorillas are aboard the Freedom Train!"

Strasburg, Colorado

As the Freedom Train roars through a tesseractuality, a battle rages inside between the red-white-and-blue form of The Guardian Angel, and a group of twenty gorillas with various cybernetic enhancements. She's managing to keep them off of her using a forcefield generated by sensors on the train, and an energy weapon the press commonly calls her Flaming Sword. Speeding past the platform, and into another portal, the young heroine shouts, "Conductor! Whatever you do, don't stop! We can't allow these Silverbacks to endanger the public!"

Denver, Colorado

"Already on it Angel," came the even voice of the android intelligence. "Passing through Denver now. May I suggest 'shock and awe,' Miss?"

Looking at the floor beneath her feet, The Guardian Angel saw a handle recessed in the floor. Quickly squatting to grab hold of it, she said, "I'm grounded. Do it!"

Kansas City, Missouri

As the train raced out of one portal and into another, an electrical charge surged through the train car, incapacitating many of the Silverbacks. One had grabbed another grounding port before the blast.

Bluefield, West Virginia

"What do you want?!" shouted Guardian Angel as the last gorilla pounded against the forcefield protecting her from his grasp.

The ape grunted, "The Conductor. Its control of the tesseractuator network will allow the Cyborgorillas to appear anywhere in the country; not just at Gorilla Grotto."

"Over my decommissioned body," The Conductor said, sounding offended.

Washington, D.C.

"Conductor! Final Stop!" commanded the Angel.

"Are you certain?" asked the Conductor.

"Meet you back at the Guard Station," she said. A circle of light appeared at her feet, and the Guardian Angel dropped through. She would reappear in the secret headquarters of the American Guardian.

"Preparing download," said the Conductor. "Cargo secured," it added, and in the funeral car, a flash of light swallowed the Crossing Guard's coffin, sending it to the Guard Station.

International Space Station

"Sir," said one of the astronauts aboard, "We're getting strange readings from the AMS-02 and the BEAM."

"Are you certain?" asked the commander.

"Yes sir. The readings are like--" but before the astronaut could finish, a tesseractuality opened up outside of the station, and ejected the Freedom Train into space. It sailed as straight as if on a track for a few seconds, then began silently twisting and tumbling, the cars tearing free of each other as they went. "Sir? What the hell is that?"

"Something you'll only see once," said the commander. "Keep watch- make sure it continues away from us."

"Yes, sir."

The Guard Station

"Download complete," stated the Conductor. "Are you here, Miss?"

"I'm here, Conductor," answered Guardian Angel. "Contact the National Cemetery. We need to finish this funeral."

"Yes, Miss."

Gorilla Grotto

"Our agents have failed, Alpha," grunted an ape.

Sitting on a stone throne, the right half of his chest and right arm covered in cybernetic metal, The Alpha let out a low growl. Crushing the right arm of the throne in his grip, he huffed angrily, and said, "Then we wait. The Cyborgorillas will have our day. We will conquer Earth. And America will be the first to fall."

Done, per our conversation, sir. :)
