Well, this is geting old.
Well, this is geting old.

Crystal woke up in a bed at Indigo City General. A bit groggy, she said, "Well, this is getting old."

"How you feeling, Salt?" asked Heironymous, sitting in a chair next to the bed.

"Like I got struck by lightning. Help me up so we can go catch that b--"

"--Hold on, partner," he said, holding a hand up. "You took that shock to the chin. Docs are checking you out to see if they can determine the likelihood of that glass jaw developing that they warned you about."

The agent groaned. "That'd bench me for good," she said quietly.

"It would definitely be a liability," Heironymous acknowledged. With a wink, he added, "but I don't like to give my partners up."

"Good thought," she said, sounding tired.

"Excuse me, is Doctor... Alice Hurley available?"

"I'll be back," Heironymous said with a smile, and then he walked out into the hall, and down to the nurses' station. "Excuse me, is Doctor," he paused to look at the business card he pulled from his pocket, and said, "Alice Hurley available?"

Before the nurse could answer, a voice from his right said, "I am. How can I help you, agent Heironymous?"

"I was wondering if you can tell me anything about special agent Salt's condition?"

"She's going to be feeling the burn from her shock for awhile. It doesn't seem to have made the injury worse, but at this point she needs to rest up and let it heal. She can do that here, or at home, but field work is going to put her at risk of developing that glass jaw."

Heironymous gave a slight scowl at the news, but said, "I see. Thank you, doctor. Do you mind repeating that to her? I'm going to have to order her home, and she's not going to like it. Doctor's orders would give it extra weight."

Doctor Hurley smiled. "I was just about to head that way."

"I do appreciate it," said the agent.

After the doctor delivered the news, Salt was not happy, but too tired to be furious. "Heironymous, we've got a lot going on here. I want to see this through."

"You've got two choices..."

"And I want you on future cases," he said calmly. "You've got two choices: I can take you to Indigo International, and you get on a plane back to Washington where you are to go home, and rest. Or, I can tie you to a gurney, put you on the plane, and have someone escort you home to rest."

Crystal yawned with some effort which made her moan at the pain. "Fine. I could use the time to catch up some paperwork."

"As long as you do it from home," Heironymous warned. "You're riding a couch, not a desk."

Salt looked at him in disbelief.

"I'm serious. You step foot inside the office before a doctor clears you, and we're going to have a problem. I need you in top form, so I need you to baby this injury so it doesn't become a liability."

Salt just stared at the ceiling. She clenched her jaw, but immediately regretted it, wincing with the pain.

"Our job is demanding. Sometimes the healing is demanding as well."

"Our job is demanding," he added. "Sometimes the healing is demanding as well. Clear?"

She nodded, making her wince again, and whishpered, "Yeah. Clear."

Just then, a nurse walked in. "Hi, Miss Salt, I'm Nurse Grow. I'm here to check a few things to make sure you're ready for discharge, and help you get ready."

Crystal noticed a silicon wedding band on the nurse's finger. "I'm all for that," she said.

"How long do you need?" asked Heironymous.

"We'll be about an hour," Mrs. Grow said.

"I'll be back about then. I'll be down in the cafeteria, partner. I'll bring you back some jello," he said with a smile.

"Don't you dare," Crystal warned him as he left.

Thank you for your help, Leander.
Thank you for your help, Leander.

After dropping Crystal at the airport, Heironymous headed back to the hotel room. He found the Prince of Dragons waiting for him in the parking lot, getting out of a grey SUV. "Thank you for your help, Leander," said Heironymous. "Both with Crystal and with my wounds."

The prince gave a slight nod of his head, and said, "Of course, my le--"

"--Not out here," Heironymous interrupted him. Pointing a thumb towards the hotel room door, he said, "Come inside."

Once inside, with slight sarcasm in his voice, Leander asked, "Is it safe to speak here?"

"Yes, and watch your tone with me, boy," warned the agent.

The prince laughed. "Father, why do you insist on continuing this charade?"

"Outside of the City of Dragons, the Dragon King is wanted," he answered. "You know that."

"An old Chinaman with a long, white beard is wanted!" protested the prince. "That's not the form you wear now!"

"It's still me," he said calmly.

"So what? Even if you still wore the same face, it's not like anyone could actually bring you in."

"Dragons don't lie."

"Never assume you can't be brought down. Hiding is one thing," said Heironymous. "Lying is another. Dragons don't lie."

The prince scoffed. "Except when we tell that one. We lie every time we change forms. What harm is adding a cover story?"

Pointing a finger at the younger dragon, he answered, "That's your mother talking."

"I think I am old enough to speak for myself, but so what if I'm saying the same thing she did? It's true."

"Boy," warned Heironymous, "because of your help here, I'm going to let that go, but you need to stop now."

"I don't think so," Leander said haughtily. "You want to talk about lying? Did you tell Agent Salt--"

"--Special Agent Salt," Heironymous corrected.

The younger dragon glared. "Did you tell Special Agent Salt that by breaking the deal with the trolls, we've risked war with them?"

Heironymous growled. "You let me worry about the trolls. They don't want irrefutable evidence of their existence to turn up any more than we do. Ultimately, the troll king will agree that we did what we had to do.

"But the trolls are not important now! We have to find Ascalon, and return it before Saint George declares war on us all! There are already two armies in the Fairylands that we have fragile alliances with, and a handful of humans who have found their way there. We don't want another to show a third army the way."

"You're still afraid of Saint George. Astounding."

"You're still afraid of Saint George," the prince said in disbelief. "Astounding."

Heironymous moved swiftly. Grabbing Leander by the throat, he slammed him against the wall, cracking the plasterboard. "Saint George killed your mother, boy."

"Yes!" he spat back. "He killed the queen because she got between him and your consort! Jacinda's mother! You stopped him from killing her!"

"Our offer of a treaty stopped him," Heironymous growled as he released his son, "and with his sword stolen, that treaty is in danger." Looking Leander in the eyes, he said, "And that's not her name."

Rubbing his throat, the prince adopted a more respectful tone. "It's the one she goes by, and the only one she'll answer to." Waving that conversation off, he added, "Saint George is one man, father, even immortal. He is not that much of a threat."

"He's not immortal; just long-lived, like us. He's also one man that has realized the potential of all men. It is better that he remains an ally."

"Father, why do you hold men in such regard?" the prince scolded.

Heironymous shook his head. "Saint George realized the physical manifestation of the 'Full Armor of God.' Ascalon is a full on 'Sword of the Spirit.' He was terror enough. If he teaches men how to access that secret? Creates an army in spiritual armor? We don't win against that. We just don't. And chances are: men will realize this secret on their own eventually anyway. Better to be on their side when that time comes."

"Is that why you joined the Americans' Secret Service then? To be on their side?" asked the prince.

"Only partly," Heironymous almost whispered.

"Then why else, my king?"

Heironymous gave a light shake of his head. "That's my business."

Leander acquiesced with the slightest nod of his head. "But finding Ascalon is our business. Where do we start?"

"And where do we find a flower that finds us a sword?"

Heironymous looked at his son with an approving smile. "We look for a flower."

"And where do we find a flower that finds us a sword?" asked Leander.

Heironymous chuckled, raised his eyebrows, and said, "At a club. Let's go."

5th Column Comics: Heironymous in Indigo, Part 5 - Salt and Wounds

The Origins Behind the Origins (or how some of these characters got their names):

Doctor Alice Hurley

My dad went into the hospital in 2019. Doctor Alice Hurley was the doctor that me and one of my brothers spoke to initially. I jotted her name down in my phone's "Notes" section, because I meant to send her a thank you note... didn't get to it right away, and then the pandemic hit a few months later.

So, fast forward to March, 2023, and I needed a doctor name for the character attending to Crystal Salt. I pulled the good Doctor Alice Hurley from my notes, and used her name. My initial thought was a one-shot usage, but then I thought of something, and now I have plans for the character of Doctor Alice Hurley. Nothing major at the moment, but we'll be seeing her again.

Nurse Grow (Mrs. Grow)

I wanted to name the nurse, and thought about the nurses on my FB friends list. I picked Mrs. Grow, but withheld her first name, because I may want to change it for the character.

Heironymous

Before this chapter, I hadn't given the Prince of Dragons a name, so I decided to rectify that. Since Heironymous is his dad, and I pulled that name out of the air and my vague recollection of the name Hieronymus Bosch, I looked it up to see where its origins are. Turns out that Hieronymus ("i" before "e," and no "o" after the "m," but I'm sticking with my spelling for the character) is Greek. So I went to the Greek for his children's names.

Leander (The Prince of Dragons)

Like Heironymous, I wanted the rest of the dragon names to sound old. Since "Hieronymus" is Greek, I looked up "Greek Male Names" on Google, and it gave me a list from SheKnows.com. I wanted something that sounded old, somewhat regal, and that I don't hear very often. Of the names offered, Leander fit the bill best. It means "lion man," which is kind of weird for a dragon, but right for a royal.

The Queen of Dragons

As of this story, we know that the Queen was killed by Saint George, and that she is Leander's mother. But... from other stories we also know that Shen is the former Queen of Dragons, and that she's very much alive, and wants to be queen again. So, what gives, right? I have an explanation mostly worked out. We'll get to it.

Jacinda

I've mentioned a dragon princess along the way, but have never given her a name. Figured I'd correct that here too. Still having the SheKnows page open, there was a second page that was actually the list for "Greek baby girl names." I looked once again for names that sounded older, somewhat royal, and that I didn't hear very often.

I didn't really like any of the choices on the list, and I have heard Jacinda before, but not very often, so I went with that. Her chosen name is closely related to her mother's name. However, there's another name on the list that gave me a possibility I hadn't thought of, and it will be coming into play later as the name Jacinda won't answer to.

Unnamed mother of Jacinda/ consort of Heironymous

I had never intended for there to be more than one mother to Heironymous' kids, but he's a king, and there's precedent for it among kings. I actually thought of it as I was writing this chapter, and decided on it firmly when I came across the name Jacinda won't answer to. There's a history there that will be revealed eventually.

Dec 23, 2023: Too Subtle For My Own Good Department - At the moment, I don't recall what Jacinda's other name is, or what her mother's name is supposed to be. Hopefully, it's in a notebook somewhere, or the baby names page I hae linked will remind me.

The Full Armor of God (with the Sword of the Spirit) [some spoilers]

One of my rules for the Heironyverse is that most everything that's in comics is possible in the Heironyverse, but God still has to be God. Therefore, the things of God exist. To make all of that work, I of course have to take creative license, and one of the things I've done is make some concepts in the Bible real, physical things.

One of those is the Full Armor of God. A concept to most, it can be realized as a physical manifestation of armor, and it may manifest differently for different people. It's a powerful thing if understood. Chances are that many who manage the physical manifestation just see it as a super-protective armor with a strong sword. It's also probable that most don't manifest the full armor, because I've found that most people don't know all of the pieces of the full armor (there's a verse that gets overlooked).

I'm not completely pulling this idea out of thin air. Besides the Armor as a concept being in the Bible, there's also an obscure reference regarding Saint George that either his sword or his armor was a pure, physical manifestation of his faith (I think it was his sword). I'll have to find that reference again.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading. -cb :^D
