I did too...glad to see Ewing pays attention to continuity. Also glad to see Odin acting more like the mighty All-Father he is supposed to be instead of the half-mad "villain" he is being portrayed as in Aaron's book. Can't wait to see Loki's role as "God of Stories" explored...

I feel like Odin is usually the bad guy. Typically Thor wants to do what's right and Odin has some kind of objection to it because of some old traditions and principles no one else cares about.

Odin is... complicated. As you stated, those old traditions are very much a part of him, but are a part of the very core of Asgard, but the Asgard that existed pre-Ragnarok. Really, everything that Odin did to Thor in the past- as harsh as it may seem to us- was done for a purpose- to shape him into a better man, a better ruler, than Odin himself- as was Odin's intention, so Thor would be able to see beyond the "old ways'' and perceive the truth of the Ragnarok cycle, about how TWSAIS manipulated it, and destroy them so that all the Asgardians could be free. Odin's fatherhood/parenting is very rooted in old Norse/Viking ways.

I don't really see that being too different from how he is currently being written in Thor. He just seems very stubborn and stuck in the past, and hates the idea of another person using his son's name and power.
