Dynamite Entertainment has announced certain fairy tale heroines are about to stand up for themselves. DAMSELS #1 will debut in September, written by Leah Moore and John Reppion with art by Aneke. J. Scott Campbell and Sean Chen will be doing the covers.

No Caption Provided
In DAMSELS #1, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Snow White come together with other damsels in a new adventure filled with danger and intrigue. In DAMSELS, the alluring princesses of classic fairy tales take up arms to save their kingdoms from war. Rediscover the darkness at the heart of fairy tales and why they'll be no happily ever after. Damsels opens with Rapa wishing she had not got out of bed that morning, if she had a bed to get out of that is. The day began badly and has gone rapidly and literally downhill ever since. A series of peculiar and baffling encounters throw obstacle after obstacle into her path, intent it seems on preventing her progress. The thing is, until today she had no idea she was trying to make any progress, toward anything! A collection of hazy memories and bewildering tattoos are all she has to help her figure it all out, and to be honest, she'd just as soon not bother. Around her, we see the mountain city of Caumont thrown into overdrive by the arrival of Queen Talia and King Aurore of Perrault. The streets are thronged with cheering people, does it matter they aren't exactly sure why they are cheering, or for whom?

A modern take on fairy tale characters? Sounds a little familiar but of course it's all about the execution. DAMSELS #1 will be out September. Be sure to let your local comic shop know you're interested in getting a copy.

I'm curious about the interior art. That could be the deciding factor.

I love Fables, a lot, however my one criticism...not even criticism,but disappointment is that they didn't incorporate my personal favorite of the "fairy tale princesses" The Little Mermaid as a main character, so I'll definitely check this out, please be good!!!

Me thinks this looks too similar to Fairest. Isn't the concept of Fairest is to take the ladies of Fables and give them the spotlight?

I think I'm going to check out along with Pathfinder that Dynimite! has coming out soon. I hope characters are well written. I'm going to have to make sure I get the Sean Chen cover, can't stand J. Scott Campbell's work.

Ok, I've lost faith in society. Why are these stupid ideas being made into serious products lately?

Yet another step to comics embracing the possibilities of public domain. I'm all for it.

If they really wanted to push this book they should have had Campbell do the interiors as well.

The interior work is really gaud awful. * Admittedly does help booster my own artistic confidence :)

I think I agree with others about the interior art...I'm really thinking they should have had Campbell do the interiors because his art is amazing. I like the concept behind this book though still.

That'd be cool if we wanted these issues to come out about once a year. No. lol, and the interiors aren't that bad. Definitely not as bad as the average Grimm Fairy Tales interior. Chicks look like dudes in the Grimm books

Do any of you honestly think Campbell is ever going to do another interior panel in his life? Bedside Jim Lee, because he is trying to make DC into something, and the occasional stuff by Silvestri ,how many big name artist do you know of that do anything more than covers anymore?

@CWB:

You're probably right. We'll never see the rest of Wildsiderz or that Spider-man thing he was going to do. I'm off Spider-man for good, but I'd definently pick that up if it ever came out. I wish he'd atleast finish those two Wildsiderz issues. That wasn't a bad book. It wasn't the best you'd ever seen, but it had it's own thing.

If I wrote this book, I'd have all the chicks have big huge guns. I mean, huge Plasma rifles and swords fighting robots. That's just where my head is at.
