I'll list two characters from the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime series and you tell me who you think would win each duel.

1. Yugi/Yami vs Zigfried von Schroeder

2. Joey Wheeler vs Yami Bakura

3. Seto Kaiba (with Obelisk the Tormentor) vs Yami Marik (with The Winged Dragon of Ra)

4. Mai Valentine vs Bandit Keith

5. Weevil Underwood vs Mako Tsunami

6. Rex Raptor vs Bonz

7. Paradox Brothers vs Lumis and Umbra

8. Seeker (Rare Hunter with the 3 Exodia sets) vs Gozaburo Kaiba

@nerdchore: How does Arcana deal with Revival Jam? Strings can just deck out Arcana by stalling behind the Jam.

Joey is getting underrated here. He did WAY better against Marik than Bakura did. And Bakura even had good Marik helping him. Joey straight up beat Marik. Passing out before finishing the word "attack" is a PIS loss. Joey would beat Bakura. And Seto would wipe the floor with Marik.

@the_legendary_supersaiyan_hulk:

1. Zigfried is only in the Grand Championship Arc, so let's say Yugi is also using his deck at the time of those same episodes.

2. Battle City Final versions. Bakura didn't duel enough in the Duelist Kingdom Arc to judge his skills at the time, he wasn't in Waking the Dragons or Grand Championship at all and in Dawn of the Duel he was a little too overpowered. The Battle City Finals is the best time to compare these two.

3. Also Battle City Finals, so Kaiba still has Obelisk but Marik ONLY has Ra, no Slifer.

4. This is a little tougher to decide because Keith never dueled under the new rules, but I don't really care for the way they played in Duelist Kingdom. Let's say they both have their Duelist Kingdom decks, only they're playing under the new format from Battle City Tournament onwards (if that makes sense).

5. Battle City, only Weevil doesn't get to cheat.

6. Same as #4. Both were only in ONE duel for BC and in Rex's case we only saw the end of it (not to mention it wasn't a fair duel because Espa Roba cheated). We saw more of their cards and skills in Duelist Kingdom.

7. For the Paradox Brothers, they get the same rules that the characters in 4 and 6 got. So if you've seen the Yu-Gi-Oh GX episode where they duel Jaden and Syrus under the newer rules, you could even judge them by their abilities in that arc if you want.

8. For Seeker, same deck he used against Joey and Yugi at the start of the Battle City Tournament. For Gozaburo, same deck he used when dueling Seto.

9. Battle City

10. Odion's Battle City Finals deck (NO WINGED DRAGON OF RA COUNTERFEIT) against Rafael's Waking the Dragon's deck.

11. Waking the Dragons (obviously)

Atem beats everyone all at once via probability manipulation to draw Exodia hand or 1 turn OTK.

Bakura's easily the most methodical duelist in the entire franchise. His strategical deck was giving Atem a hard time during Battle City, and one could argue the latter only managed to pull himself out of that situation by drawing Osiris at the last minute. Jonouchi's luck-themed deck isn't really a good match-up.

@thedarkpaladin: Joey had Evil Marik sweating and scared. Bakura didnt do nearly as well against him, even with Good Marik on his side coaching him through the duel. Joey beat Marik. He passed out before he could finish the word "attack" and thus "lost". Which is far better than Bakura did against him. Honestly that is the best direct comparison between the two. They both dueled against the same opponent, but Joey had him dead to rights. He out dueled Marik plain and simple. Marik beat Bakura without too much trouble even though Bakura had help from Marik himself.

Agreed. Joey beat Marik in the 4 way duel between him, Marik, Yugi and Kaiba and was about to beat Marik 1 v 1 before he passed out. I don't believe it's PIS he passed out though. He was being weakened throughout the whole duel with Marik as his monsters got destroyed and millennium item users actually use their powers to win duels.

@huthimamwa: Evil Malik was only worried after Jonouchi managed to resist Ra's attack. Had the latter continued with his own attack, he would have won the duel due to Malik essentially shooting himself in the foot by leaving his life points unguarded. In Bakura's case, not only was the constant bickering and disagreement between Malick and himself causing their teamwork to crumble, but the good Malick wasn't even aware of the ancient chant to summon Ra in the first place, which is what their entire strategy seemed to hinge on. Bakura's strategical prowess has caused more capable duelists than Jonouchi, whose entire deck setup relies on luck in the first place, to sweat bullets.

Edit: My mistake on the point about Ra's ancient chant. It was the one-turn kill the good Malik had no knowledge of.

@huthimamwa: let me ask you this what single card in a canon joey deck allows him to destroy spell or traps cause i cant remember one. Add in anime rulings for effects being dark sanctuary, joey stands no chance.

@ninjawarrior268: based off that logic though since bakura lost to marik and joey did better against marik than he did counts as a justifable way to loose. Than since bakura pretty much beat seto kaiba and joey never really could then he looses because bakura does betrer..

@darkroseironavenger: Psycho Shocker can destroy traps via effect, but that wouldn't help him much against Dark Sanctuary. Hurricane can return all magic/traps cards to the owner's hand, but the best that would do is buy Jonouchi a little time.

@pharoh_atem: jinzo aint doing much against bakura though. Dark sanctuary anime effect allows him to destroy a monster on his opponets side of the field when they attack once per turn by possesing them... Furthermore if the opponet only has one monster on the field he can make their opponets monster attack... So jinzo would buy a turn.. My point with no relaible spell/trap stopper or destroyed joey looses. He at the best has stall for back row

@darkroseironavenger: to answer your question, Jinzo. Also, Bakura has cards that can destroy spells and traps, and Joey has Graverobber and Copycat (which he seems to draw every duel). So he can use Bakura's cards against him.

@darkroseironavenger:

Yeah, but Jinzo it can pretty much stop Destiny Board - given all of it's "Message" cards are traps.

Dark Sancturary could be a problem, but a combination of Graverobber + summoning Dark Necrofear to the field, could allow him to circumvent it's effects, hell or even Copy Cat. Or just using Monster Reborn and praying Bakura doesn't summon the Spiritualist like he did against Yami.

I mean, this is freaking Joey Wheeler/Katsuya Jonouchi we're talking about here, beating the odds is kinda his shtick.

Joey has Jinzo which basically denies an entire mechanic and has giant trunade at his disposal which deals with all spells/ traps. Joey can probably pull a win but If Bakura played right he wouldn’t throw away his fodder fiends like he did vs Yami ( I’m pretty sure he even put them in attack mode when they have stronger defense?) and his go to Necrofear could pull him the win if DS is dealt with he can just steal Jinzo or Gilford if those came out( assuming he can survive a turn after Gilford). That duel could literally go either way imo

@nickjspresley: Are we including showcase duel cards? If so Joey does have psychic shockwave to summon Jinzo. It's not much but it could very well stump Bakura's destiny board outright.
