Feel free to put up images of the two warriors.

1) Who would win historically speaking (The actual William Wallace against a gladiator with Maximus' past)?

2) Who would win on the big screen (the two characters portrayed on film)?

When it comes down to the actual historical William Wallace, I think he would win because he was a skilled warrior and he had a physical edge - being extremely tall (around 7 feet) and muscled.

William Wallace (Braveheart - Mel Gibson) vs. Maximus (Gladiator - Russel Crowe)

This is a classic "clash of the blades" match. Who do you think takes it?

aztek the lost says:

"what, the historical William Wallace is short not tall...and not nearly as cool as the movies show him (so historically my vote goes to Maximus) and even though I liked Gladiator better for their movie portrayal I'll have to go with WW "

Are you sure about his height? After all, I wrote a 25-paged paper on the guy.

Wallace in both scenarios.

I can see Maximus having serious trouble with the kind of brutal blows Wallace can dish out with his claymore. Maximus would have the edge in speed with his smaller blade, but unless he somehow slips under Wallace's guard and guts him I see him getting driven to his knees and butchered.

Bascially, Maximus is working with a gladius or spatha, perhaps a shield.

However, Wallace would be using his claymore and a dirk. In the end, I think Wallace would crush Maximus.

I had to watch some historical film and there was portrayed as below average in height..."

People in general were below average height at the time. They were only around 5 feet or so. Wallace was much larger and more powerful than average men of that particular era is history. In fact, his height sometimes drew attention and got him into trouble. That's how his first act of rebellion occured.

Yeah...since people in general were much smaller, the tall ones really stuck out and were remembered for it. Look at Blackbeard for instance: 6'2", 250 lbs, much larger than the average man of his day. Same thing with Wallace, only more extreme. I don't even want to think about the kind of damage a 7-foot man with a claymore could do...

It would be awesome. Yeah, William Wallace (historical one) could probably even beat Beowulf. Now THAT would be awesome to see. Imagine it: Those two colossal warriors battling it out to the death. Damn, that would be alot of bloodshed.

Historical Wallace should stomp. Movie Maximus should win though as he has better combat skill it seems.

historically wallace would have been a minor noble with access to weapons and armor hundreds of years above a gladiator's.

moviewise, maximus seemed more skilled.
