So in this scenario, Hal Jordan dies in the MCU, possibly killed by Thanos.
The ring then flies away to find a new wearer.
Who becomes a new green lantern and why?

Lol ^^. Groot with a ring is Dangerous. Based on will power Thor. But he has what he needs. Vision perhaps could use it wisely for a boost. To me he fits the bill mostly
@thordinson: Baby Groot would wear it like a belt lol
@kgb725: i'm assuming you go with Thanos because of his will to become the most powerfull?
Richard Rider, probably Rick Jones, hmmm Groot's a nice choice too. Oh, Vance Astro.
EDIT:
Oops, Probably Groot, Cap, Hawkeye, or (unexpectedly) Drax
Obviously Thor or Vision. Green lantern ring has just about the same requirements to use as Mjolnir. You need to be pure of heart, have strong and non-corrupted will, be free of fear and lust for power and so on. In other words - worthy. Ring would most likely choose Thor since Vision is partially a machine, and maybe MCU Cap since he was also able to make Mjolnir move.

Is this whole pure of heart and lust for power a new thing? I mean, Sinestro certainly wasn't either of those things and he was a Green Lantern before he was a Yellow Lantern.
@thoromdil: so Thor is much more 'purely good' and 'willful' than cap? okay. though, considering Cap can't lift Mjolnir I guess that's fair enough. Mjolnir is like 'goodness meter' of MCU after all.
and Cap did hid the fact that bucky killed tony's parents. while Thor still believes in his brother for redemption.
@bruceveidt: He also went out and did it so yes
@yosefscion: well it's weird to me too. In comics Cap was able to lift Mjolnir and in the movie he wasn't. I guess maybe the whole Bucky situation and civil war made Cap compromise some of his unbiased goodness for friendship and Mjolnir could feel that. Anyways if Thor is more worthy then Cap, he is probably a better pick for the ring too.
@rr79: I think Sinestro was originally a good pick for lantern, but he became corrupted over time. Once ring chooses you it doesn't abandon you anymore even if you change your attitude. That's how Sinestro was able to wield the ring while being an asshole at the same time.

If I am not mistaken Sinestro was semi corrupted from the beginning. I seem to remember something about him wanting to rule his planet from the very beginning, but I could be wrong about that.
It definitely wouldn't go to Thanos, I remember it being a legitimate plot point in the comics that to overcome fear, one would have to have fear in the first place and generally they go to someone virtuous and strong willed. This is Cap to the letter.

True, and the wording has nearly always been 'you have the ability to overcome great fear'. If it was the absence of fear that would dictate where a ring went, Darkseid would likely have attracted all of them.
Cap does seem like the best bet... and he has the power to overcome great bullies too :)

yeah. but it made Cap seems more 'human'. not just a living symbol like Supes in comics (Supes seems to be moral guideline for humans. if Supes say its good, everyone would likely follows)
I vote for Matthew Murdock aka Daredevil. He overcame great fear to become the man without fear. That sounds like Green Lantern material to me.
@yosefscion: Mjonir isn't like GL ring at all, or are you saying that freaking Hela is more worthy than Cap ?
@thegerudoking: in fact my marvel lantern set up goes as follows(I know all of these aren't in the MCU but whatever):
red: hulk
Orange: Norman Osborn
Yellow: punisher(or wolverine)
Green: Daredevil
Blue: professor x
Indigo: silver surfer
Violet: either Betty Ross or Jean Grey

well, by shown 'feats' it looks like Hela is less 'willful' and 'determined' than Cap because as another had pointed out, Cap even when he's far weaker than opponent, still didn't back down. no one seems managed to push Hela to the edge.
Mjolnir seems to choose decent guys so far... other than Hela. so Hela might have participated in its creation.
@chattepuncher: ayyy
Not a battle.
