@distantone: D didn't retain the Akashic Record after the events of "Tyrant's Stars". It exists within the Vault connected to Valcua's Castle, which itself exists within a 4th-dimensional plane. After D used the Record to fix things for Matt and Sue, D sealed the Record Vault and Valcua's Domain inside a 4th-dimensional sphere that has Valcua's sword, Glencalibur, embedded into it.
D has the ability to manipulate and rewrite the Akashic Record. Something only the Sacred Ancestor could do. Valcua could only do this after merging with a portion of the Ancestor's power. When D goes "full vampire" he's not accessing the Akashic Record. Everything he does is all him.

@distantone: It's more easily understandable to say that D is higher-dimensional. D doesn't really do things like destroy universes or multiverses or anything like that. Yet his potency in the use of his sword is enough to kill entities on these levels. You could be multiversal in lower-dimensions and not be considered street-level in a higher dimension.
It's also been said in "White Devil Mountain" that D's power is growing every single day. An Oracle working for Duke Gilzen informs him that "Today, you are the stronger. Tomorrow...I cannot say." This is after he's already done things like absorb an infinite volume of Life Energy and use it to force open a door of infinite size and thickness in "Twin-Shadowed Knight".

Nothing is known of Lefty's past other than he did serve the Sacred Ancestor at some point before joining D. The nature of his being is unknown, Mashira is stated to be of his kind, implying there are more of him and he is a kind of species. Other than that nothing is known about how he was born or when and where exactly he joined with D. He seems to know the Crystal Palace Language (a language that is only known to those who lived 10,000 years ago). This would place his age to be at least older than 10,000 years. Lefty is broken as D himself and is capable of many things such as absorbing all four quintessential elements, absorbing illusions, dreams and other non-corporeal as well as abstract things, resurrecting D, magic, etc.

Longsword: D's weapon of choice, the Longsword is his perfect companion in combat situations where D can proficiently maneuver it and fight opponents.
