Thanos and Magus are at war. The two assemble a powerful team of villains who join the two for their own purpose or gain. The reason for the war is Magus for unknown reasons wants to destroy Death, and Thanos finds out that he has a plan that will actually work. Thanos speculates Magus wants Death to be destroyed so that he'll be completely immortal.

Thanos(and others) try to stop Magus not only for his love for Death, but for there to be balance in the universe.

Team 2 stomps round 1. Although, admittedly, I don't know what current Legion's condition is.
Team 1 wins round 2. Thanos with a month of prep is no joke.

Round 1: Depends on a lot of factors, I can see this being an 50/50 for each team with maybe a slightly edge to team 2.

Round 2: Team Thanos, the Mad Titan with prep is no joke, even Galactus would be scared.

I don't now how people are coming to there judgements, but IMO, it's too hard with too many variables; both Teams are extremely powerful though...

@king_stranglehold_da_first: while both sides have powerful dudes

mephisto is only most powerful in his realm, cul feeds off the fear of others but I doubt that'll come to pass

on the other hand you have the invulnerable trion juggy, universal powerhouse legion and a being that feeds off negative emotion. the power balance just tips in favor of team 2

I'd say team 2 win round 1 without much trouble.

I'd say the opposite for round 2, short of Doom and Reed there's not really anyone on the same level of prep as Thanos.

Team 1 has too much fodder for me to reliably give the win to them. They lack hax resistance and guys like Phoenix, Magus and Legion are full of that

@professorrespect: lol what? Thanos, Onslaught, and Mephisto all have hax and Thanos is resistant to it. If anything team 2 has too much fodder unresistant to hax like Trion Juggernaut and Mangog.

@sirdragonfly: Onslaught has TP that's inferior to team 2

Thanos....just has nothing in general in terms of hax that's important or particularly noteworthy

Mephisto outside of his realm is incredibly weak and can't do much of anything here

How is Onslaught TP inferior? If anything it is superior.

Thanos transmutes fodder into a dragonfly or TP's them.

Mephisto isn't that weak outside of his realm, though he is probably the second weakest here after Magus. But his illusion casting and time manipulation + other hax is very useful.

His best feats are scaling from 90's Xavier (of which he was nerfed) or scaling to other telepaths at the time like 90's Jean, who was herself very poor at the time as she'd been scaled back a fair bit.

Thanos transmutes fodder into a dragonfly

Obviously this is a joke post, but for the intentions of education, Thanos has only used matter manipulation about two times or so, and one was during his early days where he wasn't defined as a character yet.

Mephisto isn't that weak outside of his realm

He's VERY weak outside of his realm compared to inside, he loses a lot of that power that gives him the hype people provide a lot as he's not got the same defences. Him being scared of Annihilus Hulk, for one.

Onslaught alone could have given Jean the power level of Dark Phoenix back he solos.

Not really a joke, as Thanos has already transmuted his fodder clone into a butterfly, so he should be able to transmute Trion Juggernaut, Magus, and Mangog into a dragonfly at the very least.

Just because Thanos doesn't use that ability often doesn't mean he cannot.

He's VERY weak outside of his realm compared to inside, he loses a lot of that power that gives him the hype people provide a lot as he's not got the same defences. Him being scared of Annihilus Hulk, for one.

I know that he is weaker on the outside than on the inside, but he's still a powerhouse even if he is outside.

Being scared of Hulknihilus a Thanos-level being isn't that bad.

@sirdragonfly: Onslaught wouldn't have given Jean her Phoenix back, because that Jean wasn't Phoenix, it was actually Jean in that case. There's no proof for that being the case.

The jest of your transmutation argument is pretty simple: he used it, therefore he can use it again. Consistency says otherwise, naturally, and the lack of adjustments in the OP and fight history make that rather impossible to see in reality.

Hulknihilus was sub-Thanos. Being scared of a sub-Thanos being is kinda really bad, especially for Mephisto's high ends when he's actually in his realm.

@professorrespect:

Onslaught clearly says that he could give Jean her Phoenix powers back. Phoenix-less Jean manifesting a Phoenix raptor has nothing to do with this.

Consistency doesn't say anything otherwise. When has Thanos tried to use transmutation but failed because he didn't have it? Exactly, never. "Impossible to see" in your reality, maybe, but in the comics themselves, it's not.

By your logic, if any 2 equally strong characters fight and one wins, that makes the other one sub-winner level. Hulknihilus wasn't sub-Thanos. In fact, he might have been even more powerful. The only reason why Thanos won was because of greater experience and skill.

We don't know this at all, especially given his powers wouldn't be near the range required to equal out against the Phoenix, let alone control it to such a point where it could pick hosts for it. In terms of the story, him tempting her with such a outrageous offer makes sense.

Consistency doesn't say anything otherwise

It does, because it's a power he never uses in fights. Not hard to understand

.....not so in this case lol. Hulknihilus only has one proper fight that isn't marred in other context and it is losing to Thanos. That makes it sub-Thanos by pretty obvious intent on Starlin's part.

I doubt that Onslaught is dumb enough to say something like that without being sure in it. He had to convince Jean to join, plus if she did, he would have had to make sure that she stayed. Both would be hard to do without actually having that kind of power. Why do you think that Onslaught cannot possess that kind of power?

It does, because it's a power he never uses in fights. Not hard to understand

Let's not over exaggerate. Not often =/= "never". I still don't see why we can't accept that Thanos can use this ability in this fight unless there was a specific requirement to forbid characters to use powers they don't often use.

That's a weird claim to make. Starlin's intent was clearly to make Hulknihilus at least on par with Thanos given that he beat Gladiator more easily than Thanos would have as well as Thanos admitted that he was at least as powerful as himself.

@sirdragonfly: Onslaught doesn't have the feats to contend with the Phoenix. Not a host of the Phoenix, THE Phoenix itself is a lot more to handle than what would be otherwise. He's mostly scaling from 90's Xavier and some good feats here and there, but he's definitely not doing that.

Thanos' chances of using transmutation are very, very low. He doesn't use it when he's in a pickle ever so I can't see it being used here. You can say "it's possible" but that can be true of any nonsense power that hasn't shown up in decades.

Hulknihilus losing to Thanos in a straight up fight (not even tech or prep related, Thanos just beats him physically in a struggle) tells me that he's pretty much sub-Thanos in power directly. Thanos does say that he matches his own, but him then losing right after (like literally right after) tells me that this isn't really the case.
