✯Welcome to Mafia: Game of the Year Edition ✯

This is a game of strategy, skill, luck, trust, deception, judgement, and teamwork. Heroes and Villains face off in an epic battle between some of Video Games' most iconic faces. But don't forget the Third Parties, whether Benevolent, Malicious, or Chaotic, they have their own goals, and will manipulate, assist, or hinder the Heroes and Villains in this war in order to accomplish them. So without further ado, let's jump right in.

☑ How to Play & Rules ☑

First, let's talk about the basic Mafia game. There are two major sides, Heroes and Villains. The Heroes have a numbers advantage, however they do not know who out of the other players is also a hero. The Villains may be small in numbers, but they get the advantage of a Group PM. Because of this, they will know who their allies are and can discuss freely and privately among each other their plans and strategies. There are also Third Parties, but we'll get more into them further down. Players will be assigned a character by the Hosts, and do not get to directly choose who they'd like to play as. However there is a "Character Select" feature that will be detailed in the character portion of this thread.

Every character has unique (or at least semi-unique) abilities that they can use. These include one active ability, one passive, and one limited use item for each character. These are explained as follows:

  • The active ability is one that must be PMd to the Hosts in order to be used every night. For example, if a Character had an ability that said "Can kill one player per night", the Player who is that character must PM the Hosts their target every night, or the ability will not be used.
  • The passive ability is one that activates on it's own under certain conditions. For example, if a Character had an ability that said "Will survive any direct attacks, and kill the attacker", if they are attacked during the night, their ability will activate once they are attacked, and the attacker will be killed without any action on the player's part.
  • The item functions very similarly to the active ability, it's something that must be "activated" in the same sense. However items are extremely powerful abilities, therefor they are limited to a certain number of uses per game. However if a Character/Player is revived after being killed by an ability/item that's not their own, their item uses will be restored.

The game is split up into two cycles, Night and Day. During the Night, players can use their PM with the Hosts (Myself and DocHoliday) to tell them how they would like to use (or not use) one of their abilities that night. The villains will also use this time to select their target for the nightly kill, and the majority vote in the Villain PM will be attacked by whoever is selected as the nightly killer. Changing from past Mafia games, the Villains will also vote on who the nightly killer is. Whoever gains the most votes, will be the nightly killer. However, once a Villain has been the nightly killer, they cannot be selected again until all other living Villains have also been the nightly killer. When the Night is over, one of the Hosts will detail the Night's events in a flashy (or not so flashy) post, and the game will go into the Day stage. During the Day, players are encouraged to discuss and analyze the Night's events along with what has happened during the game as a whole to pinpoint someone they think is a villain. The entire group (Even the villains) will vote towards someone to execute. The person with the most votes will be executed by the entire town. Once they have been executed, the day advances into the next night Cycle.

The goal of the game is for one of the major sides to eliminate all major threats. So for Heroes, this means getting rid of all Villains and Malicious Third Parties. For Villains it means to eliminate all Heroes and Benevolent Third Parties. The Third Parties have their own individual win conditions aligned with whether they are Benevolent, Malicious, or Chaotic. Benevolent Third Parties are generally inclined to be helpful or at least cooperative with the Heroes, while Malicious Third Parties are the same for the villains. The Chaotic Third Parties are individually aligned, with goals that are completely random. They could help everyone, hinder everyone, stay to themselves, or pick whatever side they want.

Now for the rules. These are simple rules, and I'd very much appreciate if you'd follow them and be a good sport in this game!

  • Do not be a bad sport!! This is meant to be a fun game, and while friendly competitive banter is completely okay, do not insult any player in a possibly hurtful way. If you do, your team will be forced to pay for your consequences, as you will be removed from the game and your role forever written out. I will also convene with other hosts to see if they will continue the punishment for bad sports in their own game.
  • Do not PM other Players without Host consent/involvement. Aside from the main villain PM and a few unique cases, there should be no private discussion between players. If a player has PMd you, please inform a Host (WITH PROOF) IMMEDIATELY. This is something that could ruin the game for everyone involved, and we really do not want that. There will be rewards for players who do so.
  • Do not use screenshots to prove your role, in the main thread, or PMs. This also is a game-breaker that would make the game less fun for everyone. Anyone who does will be removed.
  • You must have at least 100 posts to play. This is to do our best to keep alts out of the game, I apologize to any new Viners without enough posts that are interested, but it's a necessity so that cheaters have less of a chance of succeeding.
  • The Hosts may add/change/remove rules at any time at their discretion. This is our game. We will try to not be dictators, however if we see a flaw in a rule that is being exploited by other players, we reserve the right to change the rules as we see fit. The better sports you are as players, the less we have to do this. If we do, we will make a large noticeable post and tag every player (alive, dead, or otherwise) to inform the group.
  • Inactivity will not be tolerated. This has been an issue in several past Mafia games, you must be active in the thread at least once every two nights to some extent. If you are not, you will be warned by a Host, and if you do not change your activity level, your role will be temporarily written out, and possibly given to an active and well behaved player who has died.
  • If you were killed, you are dead. As a role, you're gone. You can't reveal what you know, or affect gameplay at all. You can still talk, but not about anything relating to the game after you died or information you know but haven't shared. If you do anything that could effect another player's choice, you will be removed from the game after a single warning.
  • Have fun!! Let's face it, we're all a bunch of nerds here, so do what you want to make the game more enjoyable! If you want to speak like the character you were assigned, feel free! If you want to alter your playstyle to be in character, have a ball! Post memes, songs, GIFs, pictures, etc. Don't go overboard (posting the same thing five times gets kind of old) but enjoy yourself!

♛ Character Select ♛

This is something I implemented in my last Mafia game, and it was well received. So I'm bringing it back! It's a bit different this time however, in order for your list to be given priority, you must select at least 2 Heroes, 2 Villains, 1 Benevolent Third Party, 1 Malicious Third Party, and 1 Chaotic Third Party you'd like to play as. If you truly cannot do this, that's okay, but we will cater to the players that have complete lists first and foremost, and then go from there. This is because complete lists will make it much easier for us to balance the amount of players on each team. However, if you'd like to select more than the minimum, please feel free! There's no maximum for the number of characters you'd like to play as!

Heroes

Mario

No Caption Provided

The Legend, the Hero, the Main Character! Mario is famous worldwide and is practically synonymous with video games. Whether it's using his Triple Jump, Fire Flower, or Kart Driving Skills, Mario excels at almost everything. So let's jump right into his abilities!

Active - ? Block: Mario will hit a ? Block in order to gain one of his many power-ups! Each power-up will take it's place in his Item slot and has it's own number of uses as well as it's own effect He cannot have more than one item at a time, and using this while his current item still has uses, will just replace the item. There is no limit to how many times he can get each power up.

Passive - Face of Gaming: Being the most famous video game character can have it's perks, Mario cannot be killed by execution during the day, and if he is voted on, his identity will be revealed and the execution will fail.

Item - Power-ups: Mario has several power-ups to choose from! All are useful in their own way, and can be used in different situations!

Starman (1): Perhaps Mario's most powerful item, he can use the Starman on himself or another player to make them completely invincible to disabling or death for 2 nights and 1 day. This includes the night he uses it, as well as the following day and night. He has a 20% chance of getting this item when hitting the ? Block

Fire Flower (3): Mario's most iconic power-up as well as his best offensive ability, Mario can use this to disable a player's active ability on the night it's used. Be careful though, while the flames of the Fire Flower aren't exceedingly powerful, being hit with them three nights in a row will kill the target... He has a 30% chance of getting this item when hitting the ? Block

Cape (2): The item we all loved getting in Super Mario World, the Cape allows Mario to protect himself for one night from killing, as well as stun the attacker for the following night he has a 25% chance of getting this item when hitting the ? Block

Yoshi (1): The loyal partner for our plumber hero, Yoshi allows Mario to turn his enemies into eggs! The use of this item on a player, kidnaps them in an egg and they are disabled and unable to vote (though able to talk in the thread) until Mario dies or releases them. Mario can release his target at any time. However if they are attacked by a killing ability, the egg will break (though the captive will live) and they will once again be able to play normally. He has a 15% chance of getting this item when hitting the ? Block

1-Up Mushroom (1): Delicious and very nutritious, the 1-Up Mushroom does exactly what you'd think, gives either Mario or another player an extra life. If they are killed during the night, they will respawn the following day, and if they are killed during the day, they will respawn the following night (while having their item usages restored of course). He has a 10% chance of getting this item when hitting the ? Block.

Luigi

No Caption Provided

Though he's often looked at as the underdog or second fiddle, don't underestimate Luigi! The mean green has plenty of tricks up his sleeve just like his older brother, and isn't someone you want to have on the opposing team regardless of if it's in soccer or a playful party minigame. He's even better at jumping than Mario (don't let Mario hear you talk about that though, it gets under his skin), and is just as great of a Kart Driver to boot. Let's get into what this lean, green, killin' machine can do!

Active - Poltergust 5000: An updated version of his Poltergust 3000, Luigi can use this vacuum to steal another player's item for himself! He can always return the item at any time if he feels he's done something wrong, but he gets all the effects of the item, as well as it's current number of uses.

Passive - Brother's Bond: Luigi will know who Mario is at the start of the game, and will be added to a private PM containing the hosts, Mario, and Luigi, so they can discuss whatever they wish.

Item - ? (?): Luigi saves his item pocket for whatever item he gets from another player! He can only hold one at a time though, stealing another returns the item to it's original owner (though, it's returned with it's current uses, so if he uses 1 out of 3 uses of an item, the item will be returned to the owner as 2/3 uses left)

Link

No Caption Provided

The Hero of Twilight and wielder of the Triforce of Courage, Link has many gadgets and gizmos of which to choose from. Perhaps his most iconic is the Master Sword, the blade of Evil's Bane. This sword glows with the light to repel evil and dispel the darkness. So what does he bring to the table here? Let's see.

Active - Spin Attack: Using the Master Sword, Link can attack one player of his choice. If they are a villain, they will fall. If they are a hero, they will be stunned losing both of their active and passives on the following night. However this takes time to charge up, so it activates the night after the ability is used.

Passive - Unshakable Courage: As the wielder of the Triforce of Courage, Link always presses forward no matter what. He cannot be disabled in any way.

Item - Magic Armor (1): Link has a magical set of armor that he can equip that makes him invulnerable as long as he has Rupees to spare. However he didn't pack enough for this trip, so this armor can only survive one hit, or last 3 nights. Whichever comes first. But it does make sure he can't be killed as long as it's functioning.

Samus Aran

No Caption Provided

Perhaps one of the deadliest bounty hunters to exist, Samus Aran is known for her astounding agility, intelligence, and efficiency. Even without her armor equipped she's a force to be reckoned with, and one never to be underestimated. Her abilities in this game make her the same.

Active - Charge Shot: Almost as well known as Mega Man's, her charge shot focuses an insane amount of power into a single projectile. However she can fire this when not fully charged as well, and each level of power provides a different effect. If she doesn't charge it at all (activates the night it's used) it will merely disable the target's active ability on the night it's used. If charged halfway (activates the night after the ability is used), it will disable the target's active and passive ability on the night it's used, as well as keeping them disabled until the following night is over. If she fully charges it (activates two nights after it is used), the target will be destroyed. If she's disabled while charging, she will lose the charge.

Passive - Varia Suit: If attacked, Samus' Armor will automatically protect her from death one time, but it will shatter and she will be left with only her Zero Suit, reducing her active to her Zap Gun, which can only disable opponents.

Item - Scanner (3): Samus can use her built in HUD to scan a target, revealing their identity. It's functionality is a bit fritzy in this dimension though, so it will only work 3 times...

Sonic the Hedgehog

No Caption Provided

The fastest thing alive, or so he claims, Sonic the Hedgehog is an outrageously fast competitor in this war, and he's sure to leave his enemies in the dust. His ridiculous speed is only rivaled by his cocky attitude. His abilities are sure to leave the villains' heads spinning.

Active - Flash of Blue: Sonic can use his speed to switch two players for the night. Whatever was going to happen to one, will happen to the other. This move goes before all other moves, except disabling moves that target Sonic.

Passive - Ring Collection: Collects 5 Rings every Night, unless he's disabled. His ring count is what determines the effectiveness of his item.

Item - Super Sonic Transformation (1): Sonic can transform into Super Sonic, and he becomes invulnerable to killing attacks/being executed, and can now switch four people per night, instead of just two. His ring count decreases by 10 every cycle he is in this form (Day and Night)

Kirby

No Caption Provided

Even though he looks harmless, this Pop Star warrior packs one heck of a punch. His Copy Ability allows him to be one of the most versatile Heroes. He can take the ability of any other warrior and add it to his own arsenal!

Active - Inhale: Kirby can use this ability to inhale any other player and gain their active ability as his own. He gets all the drawbacks of the ability too though, so don't just use other abilities haphazardly. This ability is replaced by the active ability he gains

Passive - Ability Shield: While Kirby has an ability, getting hit with a disabling ability will only cause him to lose that current ability instead of being disabled for that night (meaning any action he did would still go through).

Item - Exhale (0 or 1): Kirby can use this to exhale his current ability at another player and disable their active ability for the night. But he can't use it if he has no ability active.

Elizabeth

No Caption Provided

Daughter of Zachary Comstock, prophet of the floating city of Columbia. Elizabeth is able to open tears, which are basically portals between possible realities. These tears can be extremely useful to her and her companions, as they can contain things that this world does not.

Active - Tear Revival: Elizabeth can revive a player that died by opening a portal to another world. This revives them as if they were starting the game over (Full item usage, no negative effects from past abilities, etc.)

Passive - Scavenge: Elizabeth has a 15% chance of finding any helpful item in the game and giving it to another hero, activating it's effect immediately on them.

Item - Crossbow (3): Elizabeth can use this handy tool to launch one of three types of non-lethal bolts. A noisemaker bolt will cause any abilities targeting her to target another random player instead, a tranquilizer bolt will disable a target on the next night, and gas bolts will disable anyone who interacts with her on the following night.

Rico Rodriguez

No Caption Provided

The protagonist of the Just Cause series, and the closest thing you'll get to Spiderman with guns, Rico is a gun slinging, helicopter jacking, car surfing badass. His abilities are best when put in the hands of creative thinkers, kinda like in his game...

Active - Grappling Tie: Rico can bind two players together using his grappling hook. Anything that happens to one, will happen to the other. This wears off after 3 nights however, and he can't bind more than one pair at a time. If he binds another pair, the first pair will be unbound.

Passive - Chaotic Nature: Rico's great at causing chaos, so much so that he fits in with the third parties. If investigated he will show up as a random third party.

Item - C4 & Detonator (2): Rico can place C4 around any player he chooses, and by detonating that C4, anyone who interacts with the player on that night, while their effect will still go through, they will be killed by the resulting explosion. He brought two charges with him, so he can stack this effect on two players or use it on one at a time.

Geralt of Rivia

No Caption Provided

Though a blade for hire against monsters, Geralt has chosen to assist the heroes in this war, his sense of good will pulling him to their side. Heck, some of the villains look similar to the monster's he's accustomed to hunting. He is a dangerous foe and wields sword and spell alike to strike down the villains.

Active - Steel Sword: Geralt can kill one player per night, however his iron sword does not differentiate friend from foe and harms good just as well as evil. So watch who you swing this thing at.

Passive - Night Vision: Geralt can manipulate his pupils for better seeing in the night, and will know the identity of anyone to interact with him.

Item - Quen (3): Geralt can cast this sign to cast a protective barrier over anyone he chooses. They will be protected from one lethal attack on that night.

Phoenix Wright

No Caption Provided

A defense attorney with a knack for telling when people are lying, Phoenix Wright believes strongly in justice and honesty, and will not stand for those villains trying to blend in with the heroes while good people die. His abilities as a lawyer have made him perhaps the best there is at information gathering.

Active - Reveal the Truth!: Phoenix can track down and investigate any one player per night, revealing their identity.

Passive - Word of Law: As a defense attorney, Phoenix has learned how to make his ideas known and believed, his vote counts for two in the main thread.

Item - Evidence (4): Phoenix can use this extra special bag of evidence he's found to know a player's identity, bypassing all protection and deception.

Dovahkiin

No Caption Provided

A mortal born with the soul of a dragon, that's the Dovahkiin, or Dragonborn. A born warrior through and through, he can use the mighty power of Dragon Shouts to effect his foes in a variety of ways, the Thu'um is probably the most versatile weapon of all.

Active - Shout: Dovahkiin will be given a random shout per night by the moderator, each shout has a different effect that can range from killing someone at random to switching someone's target. It all depends on the luck of the draw.

Passive - Soul Absorption: If Dovahkiin kills someone, that player cannot be revived as long as Dovahkiin lives. He absorbs their very souls.

Item - Wabbajack (2): An artifact of Sheogorath, Dovahkiin can use this for a random positive effect for the heroes, which can be as grand as granting invulnerability to as minor as preventing a single disable.

Master Chief

No Caption Provided

Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, Spartan II Super Soldier. One of the best known faces (or...helmets) in the FPS genre of gaming, he brings cunning, luck, advanced technology, and a whole lot of muscle to the fight. His advanced AI Cortana is also extremely helpful against hostile AIs...

Active - Spartan Covert Ops: You can covertly follow a player each night, and know all of the players that visit them. You will not be told their roles or actions however.

Passive - Cortana AI Countermeasures: Because of Cortana you are immune to any negative effects from Malicious or Evil AI systems. You can't be interacted with in any way by them. If attempted they will simply fail.

Item - Armor Lock (1): You can use this to enter an armor lock state in which you can vote and talk in the main thread, but cannot use your ability at night. In exchange you are invulnerable until it is released.

The Sole Survivor

No Caption Provided

Futuristic weaponry and armor come standard with the Survivor, and they are not to be taken lightly.

Active - V.A.T.S.: Using pinpoint targeting, the Sole Survivor can target three players per night, if any of those players were going to make a kill, he will cripple their limbs and they will fail.

Passive - Power Armor: For the first day and first two nights, the sole survivor is invulnerable, however after that, his fusion core will die and he can only target one player per night with his VATS ability, and he will be vulnerable to attack.

Item - Stimpak (4): The Sole Survivor can use this on another player to prevent them from being disabled on the following night.

Ike

No Caption Provided

Active - Aether: On the first night it's used, the target will have their active and passive ability disabled, and on the second night, Ike will be protected from death. However it requires a night of recharge.

Passive - Mercenary: Third Parties will not be able to kill Ike, as his name in the Mercenary world is legend. They can still disable and stun him, however kills will fail.

Item - Magic Barrier (2): Ike can place this down in front of him, and for the next night, no one will be able to interact with him. Heroes and villains alike.

Lara Croft

No Caption Provided

The famed Tomb Raider had humble beginnings, and though she's gotten more curves than in her original games, she's every bit as determined and deadly. She's innovative and clever, and can use her surroundings to her advantage better than anyone.

Active - Two Way Radio: Lara can use this to send a message to any player through the hosts once, with a one night recharge. She will get any reply. However the signal reception is shoddy and she cannot reveal her identity this way, and identities cannot be revealed to her this way either.

Passive - Hidden Treasure: If Lara survives until Night 5, her active ability will be upgraded, and she can now send her identity and receive identities (or what the other player says is their identity) through her active ability.

Item - Rope Trap (2): Lara can select a player, and arm a rope trap in front of them. The first player to interact with that player will be trapped for a night, unable to be interacted with or interact with others.

Passive - Squid Form: As the Ink has a slight area of effect, Agent 3 cannot be interacted with by the players she hits with her active until the second night after they are hit by it. (Example, she hits Player A with her active on Night 1, they can't interact with her on Night 2, but can on Night 3)

Item - Modified Seeker (3): Using these, Agent 3 can force her target to use their ability on any player they choose. If the ability is in a cooldown period, or the player is disabled, or any other similar situation, it will fail.

Active - Barrier: Jude can cast this arte to protect one person from death each night.

Passive - Medic: As a healer, Jude knows how to treat his injuries. In order for him to be killed, he must be attacked more than once per night. However disabling counts as an attack, so if he's disabled/stunned/etc. then attacked, he will die. However he cannot survive an execution.

Item - Immaculate Healer (2): Jude can select one fallen player, and revive them from death.

Active - Portal Gun: Chell can choose to launch either an orange or blue portal at any player she chooses with this. Once both portals have been set up, anything that targets the first player will instead happen to the second player, and vice versa. However she can choose to change her portals up, and move them around between players. She can only shoot one portal per night.

Passive - Test Subject: Chell cannot be killed by GLaDOS and cannot aim her portals at GLaDOS. If attempted, the portal will simply fail to be placed.

Active - Flash: Pikachu uses stored electric energy to blind all players for the night, causing all hostile abilities (kills and disables) to fail, this requires two nights of recharge however.

Passive - Static: Has a 50% chance to paralyze anyone who interacts with him. When paralyzed, a player has a 50% chance their move will not go through during the night. Paralysis lasts three nights.

Item - Thunder (2): Can call down a mighty bolt of lightning from the sky, and kill one player of his choice.

Active - Spiritual Communication: Once at least 3 players have died, Ronan can send a PM through the hosts to any one of the dead players and they can reply as well. Just like Lara's ability, identities cannot be revealed through this method.

Passive - Ghostly Sight: Ronan can see the spirits of the dead, and on each night, he will see the roles that have passed away.

Item - Exorcism (2): Ronan can target any dead player, and destroy their spirit entirely. Removing their role from the game irreversably.

David "Section" Mason

No Caption Provided

The son of legendary Black Ops agent Alex Mason, David follows in his father's footsteps and uses highly advanced technology, cunning, and stealth to carry out clandestine missions usually deep in enemy territory.

Passive - Optical Camouflage: Section cannot be investigated, and any investigation attempts on him will fail.

Item - Grenades (3): Section has a few grenades to choose from. Flashbang will cause the target's target for their ability to be changed, a stun grenade will cause the target's ability to be delayed until the following night, an XM31 grenade will launch and if it hits a villain, will explode immediately killing them, but if it hits a hero or third party, it will kill them on the following night.

Commander Shepard

No Caption Provided

Ah, David Mason is a role. Way to remind me of Blops III's disappointing story

Just a heads up, everyone is being added to the sign in up spots, I just have the "Edit Topic" open in another window since I'm also working on the character descriptions still, so don't fret if you don't see your names pop up. I'm getting you all, I promise :)

@neon_leon: PM but there's no rush. I still have a lot of work to do on the characters, I'm trying to adapt the abilities to be really in line with who the characters are, instead of trying to mold Mafia abilities into some weird semblance of related thing to their game or something.

Well several of the heroes can be skewed with their morals. Dovahkiin can be evil, so can Rico, or the Sole Survivor. I just figured as a protagonist, he'd best fit as a hero.

Okay then, I appreciate it :D

Alright heading to bed, when I wake up I'm hitting the updates again and you should see them tomorrow sometime. Hopefully I'll have the game ready to launch by Sunday afternoon (With a good amount of players, all the characters complete, etc.)

@parichithayerakala: That's allowed, you just can't use screenshots of PMs to do it. I do think way too much of it happened, though, and it made me feel kinda weird revealing myself, removing more mystery from the game, but I mean, the nature of my role basically required me to reveal myself, so I didn't give it much thought. I also felt like as a hero, it was too easy for the heroes. I didn't actually read how it ended, though.

Alright, just posted an update. There are a couple changes to the rules, as well as some of the characters being updated. I will update the title, we're at 27 people already I think, which is pretty amazing on only the second day! Thanks for your interest guys!

@saint_of_origin: Do we play as all of them at a time? Or is it just who we wanna play as the most?

You send me a list of the ones you'd like to play as, and out of those, you get a role. Unless all the roles on your list have already been assigned. Priority goes to those with more roles on their list. It could be any of the ones above, but your role determines what team you're on.

Update for everyone else: Had an issue with a close friend today, I'm on The Sole Survivor right now, gonna power through and hopefully finish up the heroes tonight, and then villains when I wake up tomorrow, and hopefully we'll have around 35 players by tomorrow evening when I finish up the third parties.
