Green Lantern Ring vs Sauron's One Ring to Rule Them All!

Two rounds. In both cases, Hal Jordan has the Lantern ring and Sauron has the One Ring. Morals on in both rounds.

Round 1: Direct one-on-one battle, no prep. Battle takes plane Larry Niven's Ringworld.

Round 2: Both sides try to use the charisma/power afforded by their ring to create an army and fortress. They have ten years of prep. They set up in side-by-side kingdoms, then go to war. This can include fighting between their armies and the wielders of the rings themselves.

Who wins each round?

This is the book version of Sauron's ring. You can use any Tolkien text to back up its feats, including the Silmarillion, etc., or any of the originally unpublished texts that Christopher Tolkien later published.

Both rounds? Just one GL ring in either fight here.

He doesn't need troops or armies to beat Sauron, unless I'm missing something.

Just a little Sauron info for those who may not know a lot of the Middle Earth backstory. I think his ability to raise armies and create a fortress is pretty clear just from LOTR. But in terms of his personal power:

Sauron is one of the Maiar, a race of divine spirits right below the "gods," or Valar. The Maiar are essentially at the level of angels, and thus pretty powerful. He was the chief lieutenant of Morgoth, who was the chief evil Vala. Tolkien was a pretty serious Catholic, so you can think of Morgoth as Satan and Sauron as his chief archangel, in terms of power.

According to Tolkien, Sauron was of a "far higher order" than later Maiar like Gandalf (who was able to defeat a Balrog) or Saruman. He was later known as the Necromancer, or black magician. He was a master of illusions and shapeshifting. He was highly knowledgeable about magic, able to create his own magic ring as well as those for the men and dwarves, and taught the elves how to make theirs. He was able to be killed, but also turned to a spirit when that happened. He was able to influence minds. His body can burn like fire. The Eye of Sauron can make people cower and fall to the ground.

His Ring increases the life span. It can help the wearer read minds. It can create a powerful aura of fear. Most importantly, it can increase all the natural powers of the wearer. Its other forms of potential are ambiguous, but Galadriel and Galdalf both refused to wear it, saying that they would try use its powers to do great good but would eventually succumb to its evil nature. The question of how they would use its powers to do good is unclear, but it may have had the power to affect reality to some degree, and certainly minds. Again, it is possible for Sauron to be beaten while wearing it, it happened multiple times.

In comparison, the elvish rings could protect an area from evil (such as Galadriel created in Lothlorien) and generally create an aura of beauty in an area, as well as inspire good and hope. So in general perhaps the One Ring can be seen as the opposite of this, and generally helps corrupt an area and create an aura of fear. (The dwarf rings helped create their riches, and the human rings are more unclear; they created longer lives and increased their owners' powers somehow).

So basically if he has a possibility of winning one-on-one, its through the power of fear and mind control and possession.

No disrespect to the One Ring, but why is it so coveted? A Green Lantern ring, on the other hand, fetches some pretty hefty beer money because in the words of DC's Hitman: "Holy crap, what -doesn't- it do?!"

Well that's what I think is interesting. When I first thought of this, I thought, of the One Ring for sure. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it doesn't have much in the way of active powers itself. It's more of a "mood ring" in a way. Not so many bells and whistles, more atmosphere.

I think in the world that it's from, it is tied into the overall magic of the land, and would probably drain its enemies of hope and willpower--sort of like Parallax, in a way actually. But it doesn't do nearly as much in an active sense as a GL ring.

Plus it makes people crazy addicted to it. It's like the Mask (comics, not movies).

R1: I'm not sure exactly of the One Ring's offensive abilities, so I'd have to say Hal wins.

R2: I think the One Ring's army creating factors are undefeatable

Lantern ring stomps. The ring doesn't have to create a fortress.Just a small house that Sauron's army has no way of infiltrating and a small group of soldiers created by the ring to obliterate Sauron and his army or Hal can do it by himself

One of the issues with the One Ring is that we seldom see it's full potential.

However, consider a Black Lantern that can only be beaten by cutting the ring off his hand with Wonder Woman's (or another divinely enchanted) sword.

Combine that with it's corrupting ability, and Hal's own ring might betray him. Sauron was slowly corrupting all the magic of Middle Earth even while he was a disembodied spirit, his ability to do so was amplified greatly with the ring. The 'evil' creatures of Middle Earth were corrupted forms of Elves, Men, and other creatures he turned to his cause. Also, the giant spider? Another corrupted High Elf, and his former consort IIRC.

This. Compared to a Lantern Ring, the one ring isn't powerful at all.

@owie:

Round 1) Sauron has only his ring? Well, still it is enough. Although if he is the armored tall guy, GL can beat him with his constructs, if he uses any other form, Sauron wins.

Round 2) Sauron definately wins. The green lantern ring cannot create an army or a fortress! He could use construct-based army or fort, but not for very long! Sauron could start spamming Orcs!

well well... the one ring as opposed to the power-rings; let us not forget that sauron is absolutely invincible, and that he only seeks new forms to take, hence the green lantern universe, with it's lords and worlds is only potential
