Might Guy struggles with him if he doesn't go immediately to 6th or 7th Gate. An may just lose Gildarts if he doesn't proceed with caution against Gil crush magic.

Gildarts smashes the little ninja. He's massively superior in every physical category bar speed in 8G (suicide), plus he has a oneshot magic spell.

Only way for Gai to win is to activate the 8th gate the moment the fight starts, otherwise he will get one shotted mercilessly.

And even with 8th Gate him wining isn't guaranteed as Gildarts should be able to react to him and use crash to stop the shockwaves from doing anything to him.
