Hisoka Morrow: The Magician

No Caption Provided

Hisoka Morrow of Hunter X Hunter is in many ways, an anomaly. After all, Togashi is quite creatively frugal when it comes to expanding on his character. As such, there is little to truly be gleaned from Hisoka's background, motivations, aspirations and intentions. Heck, even within the context of the story itself, many characters are likewise bewildered by Hisoka and constantly left guessing by his actions or lack thereof. However, in the midst of so many uncertainties, there is one thing that remains crystal clear: Hisoka is one of the deadliest combatants HxH has to offer. Not only in regards to his raw physicality, but the effectiveness of his Nen, the proficiency in his tactical ability, and his intrinsic killer instinct. So, though there isn't much to be known about Hisoka's true character, what I do know for certain is that he is more than a match for the opponent placed before him. In fact, Hawks is almost the antithesis to what has been described seeing as how Horikoshi spared no words in detailing Hawks' character. And that, despite this, Hawks' genuine combative capabilities are nevertheless shrouded in ambiguity due to his limited appearances and even more scarce battles and fights. Only time will tell if my opponent is able to decipher this mystery and make a coherent puzzle out of so few pieces. Regardless, my goal here is to clearly communicate what Hisoka brings to the table and why I think he is easily capable of dominating this battle.

For aesthetic purposes.

The Power of the Magician

Though raw power and stats are not at the forefront of Hisoka's combative merits, that is hardly to say he does not possess them. To the contrary, Hisoka is in quite respectable standing in terms of his tiering in the verse and the clarity of his scaling and power placements. To understand this, it must be understood that Hisoka possess a unique and excessive lust for fighting; he only seeks to fight the strong. This is to the point that Hisoka will goto a Hunter election, not to vote, but merely to measure the power levels of the Hunters attending and take notice of anyone he deems strong enough. One character that met Hisoka's criteria was none other than Chrollo Lucifer, the leader of the Phantom Troupe. Hisoka obsessed at the prospect of fighting someone so strong, to the point that he infiltrated the Phantom Troupe just to get a chance to do battle with him. I think it is important to emphasize not just how obsessed with Chrollo Hisoka was, but that the power levels of the other Troupe members fell under his radar. Mind you, the Phantom Troupe is littered with characters that easily operate at the multi city block level tier. Characters that have the raw Nen to conjure 50 buildings or pulverize a sizable volume of ground with estimated city block to multi city block level potency or shatter a hillside with the shockwave of aflex. This isn't to say that Hisoka would stomp everyone on the Troupe that isn't named Chrollo. However, it does imply that everyone else shouldn't be superior to Hisoka, and if they are, it is marginal. In fact, comparisons have been made between Phantom Troupe members and Hisoka as far as general power level goes. The context is that Gon and Leorio could not grasp just how strong the Troupe was. Killua, who had been warned by his father of the Troupe's strength, was immediately able to tell that even two random members of the Troupe were roughly equivalent to two Hisokas. Inevitably, Hisoka got the fight he so yearned for, facing off against Chrollo at Heavens Arena. It is noted that Chrollo went through great lengths in preparing for Hisoka, from the location of the fight to his tactics to the Nen abilities he acquired for the task. Chrollo even notes that Hisoka has set a record for the amount of abilities Chrollo has had to acquire to kill someone, implying he couldn't do so prior (at least not in a convincing fashion). And despite this, the fight between Hisoka and Chrollo is still relatively competitive.

In summation, the baseline for Hisoka's power tier is such that he is peers with characters that effortlessly boast multi city block levels of output and can even trouble the leader of the Phantom Troupe. However, that is merely the baseline. The precedent. There is definitely more tangible stuff to work with. Like, for example, Hisoka asking for Illumi's permission to kill Killua. Though this was asked with the intention of setting off Illumi's bloodlust, the fact that Illumi took Hisoka's question seriously to the point he lost all control and was engulfed in rage... implies that, at the very least, Hisoka is capable of doing so. This is a notion reaffirmed later on when Hisoka contemplates on whether he should kill Killua and invoke the wrath of Illumi. As far as in verse scaling goes, this is consistent given that base Killua is directly compared to Squadron Leaders; the likes of which are one shotted and killed by Silva. So on all cylinders there is zero basis to contest Hisoka's ability to kill base form Killua, which itself isn't really at all far fetched given that Killua is really only argued to be above Hisoka cause of Godspeed (ie not his base form). The reason this is of particular note is that Killua is no slouch when it comes to durability:

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 236
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 236

Above, Killua face tanks a direct explosion from the Carabid Beetle. the first scan (remember this is right to left) shows the size of the surrounding trees, which visually appear to be building sized. The explosion in question dwarfs these tree by an absolutely massive margin. We see the explosion violently fragment these building sized trees hundreds of meters into the air over its AoE, with the dimensions of the explosions easily being multi city block level. The bare minimum potency for this explosion should be in the multi city block tier with this in consideration, but I've even seen calcs that get into straight up town level. And Killua is at the epicenter of detonation, borderline unaffected by the blunt force and only phased because of the heat.

Beyond AP, the narrative implication that Hisoka could kill Killua on a whim bodes well for his speed scaling. Namely because of Killua's own speed feats during the Chimera Ant Arc:

Ikalgo's Flea Bullets can cross absolutely MASSIVE distances in a single second. To really crunch the numbers here, I'd refer to this specific shot:

Hunter X Hunter: Episode 100
Hunter X Hunter: Episode 100

The smoke in the screenshot above came from Centipede's explosion attack just prior, and reveals Killua's rough positioning. Note that this smoke mass lies on the horizon from this view. The view in question is just below Ikalgo's eye level, which is still a significant viewer height considering that Ikalgo is on top of a massive rock structure that dwarfs the size of the trees in the forest below. The tree height alone (even just pulling from the anime) is building sized considering the degree to which it eclipses the size of all of the Chimera Ants and Killua. Using a low end of 50 meters for Ikalgo's height (I can't stress how generous this is given how much higher it is compared to the trees), that would make the smoke cloud 25.3 km away. Since Killua was not at that exact spot, to be conservative, I'll just use 25km. Using the 1.5 second timeframe shown, this yields Mach 46 speeds. These numbers are not meant to be rigid values, but even tinkering with lower viewer heights (and thus lower horizon distances) and then subtracting KMs away to (very) generously account for Killua's positioning still yields a bare minimum of Mach 37+. And logically speaking, a projectile would have to be that fast to clear massive swaths of forest land in an instant.

Now, Killua was tagged at first because he was caught by surprise, and didn't know where he was being tagged from or who was attacking him. So, Killua focused and extended his aura to 57 centimeters so, as soon as the bullet went into that area, he would know where it was coming from. As a result, Killua was able to react to and dodge the flea bullet from 57 cm away, in what the manga describes as "superhuman reflexes and pure speed". Dodging projectiles generously placed shy of Mach 40, and realistically well within the Mach 40 range (though even that was conservatively calced) from 57 centimeters away is nonsensically impressive.

Hisoka easily scales above this. On top of that, I've already shown Silva blitzing Cheetu. Though Cheetu wasn't paying attention, it is explicitly stated that Cheetu would've been tagged and killed whether he looked or not. Keep in mind that Silva and Zeno are blatant inferiors to Chrollo (Chrollo even managing to hold his own in a 2v1 while holding back). It is telling that Chrollo was willing to engage in sustained CQC with both Zeno and Silva during their fight, but outright refused to engage in such CQC with Hisoka. In fact, Chrollo only engaged in CQC when Hisoka was distracted and off guard. He would only use sneak attacks.

This is pretty telling of the intent, at least as far as drawing some relativity between Hisoka and the Zoldycks, if not (slight) superiority in pure H2H. As far as Cheetu's own speed is concerned:

Hunter X Hunter 2011: Episode 93

The police unload on Cheetu. As the bullet is literally a centimeter away from Cheetu's eye, it is only then that Cheetu moves. Cheetu moved completely FTE in frame and gets behind the police officers in the same timeframe that the bullet can only cross a fraction of a centimeter's worth of distance. While the bullet is crossing a centimeter's worth of distance in slow motion, Cheetu is completely FTE in frame and gets behind the police officers. Note the way the scene is structured and put together; Cheetu moves FTE to the bullet in slow motion via a close up shot and then we immediately get a wide view revealing Cheetu is nowhere to be seen. This implicates that Cheetu crossed this distance during the timeframe that the bullet was crossing a faction of a centimeter.

However, I'll be conservative. Let's assume that Cheetu only moved the same distance as his head size, which we can verify is the case as a minimum given he moves completely out of frame WHILE the bullet crosses a fraction of a centimeter. And let's use a subsonic muzzle velocity for the handguns. Even with these lowballed values, the feat still comes out to Mach 50 in movement speed. This is extremely casual for Cheetu, so that's nowhere near his cap. Moreover, as far as reaction speed implications, this means that Cheetu could react to massively hypersonic attacks (mach 100+) from even a meter or so away. So yes, very impressive stuff here.

With this in mind, Hisoka should definitively be within the low MHS tier as far as speed is concerned. And to tie this altogether, I will close with a speed feat of Hisoka's own from his fight with Chrollo.

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 351
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 351

Essentially, Chrollo uses his Hatsu to create an explosion and catch Hisoka off guard. We see the explosion expand in slow motion, and Hisoka perceives it in slow motion as he notes it is "a blast" and even takes notice of the blood expanding with the explosion. With the explosion a mere inch or two away, he moves dozens of feet from its expansion before it can hit him.

A Magician's Tricks

Though Hisoka is certainly physically capable, his strengths don't lie in his raw power or stats. Hisoka's lethality as a combatant can predominately be attributed to the potency of his Hatsu, Bungee Gum:

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 55
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 55

Essentially, Hisoka modifies his aura to mimic elastic and sticky properties. While simple in premise, it is far more complex in application and practicality. For starters, it should be noted that Bungee Gum is a Nen construct and Nen is completely invisible to non Nen users. Hell, Hisoka can even make Bungee Gum imperceptible to Nen users via techniques like In. So I don't think there is much room to argue Hawks perceiving Bungee Gum to any degree. This is a really disadvantageous position to be in because it will be nigh impossible for Hawks to figure out Hisoka's powerset, let alone adjust to it on the fly. To put this into perspective, two Nen prodigies in Gon and Killua were completely unaware of Hisoka's ability, despite watching and observing a prolonged fight of his, for this very reason.

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 56

Needless to say, Hawks will be completely left in the dark surrounding Hisoka's abilities and attacks. The same can't be said for the vice versa. Hisoka can attach his Bungee Gum to others through projecting his aura or through physical contact, which can be extremely subtle, especially when optimizing its invisibility. And from there-

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 62-63
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 62-63

You are completely at the mercy of Hisoka. Above, he pulls Gon in to be hit with a straight right hand. A similar tactic was employed when he used Bungee Gum to pull in an enemy and swiftly twist his neck off as he was coming in. Hisoka has also used his Bungee Gum to completely immobilize Machi or just straight up ragdoll his opposition:

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 355
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 355

Heck, Bungee Gum can straight up create new limbs:

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 357
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 357

There are many other uses for Bungee Gum, but I'll save some things for my next post. I want to close this section by quickly touching on Hisoka's weapon of choice:

Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 9
Hunter X Hunter: Chapter 9

His playing cards.

Hisoka uses his physical strength in tandem with his Nen to deliver devastating piercing attacks. He aims for the throat but he can also be more precise and target the tendons to incapacitate his enemies. Hisoka can also use his cards as projectile attacks. Hawks really can't afford to get tagged by these attacks given his lack of piercing durability feats and his small amount of durability feats in general.

What's To Come

All in all, I favor Hisoka in this battle comfortably. I think he has a distinct physical advantage over Hawks and I don't think Hawks is at all equipped to deal with Hisoka's abilities or fighting style. In the posts to come, I hope to go more into detail about Bungee Gum along with Hisoka's tactics and other x-factors in his favor. This post was merely intended to lay the foundation and get the ball rolling. So with that, the ball is in your court Death. Good luck!
