I'm a bit late on the voting but here are my thoughts anyway. Both arguments were presented thoroughly and thoughtfully, but I have to give it to Viper. I still think Roland wins, but Viper made a great argument that I really had to consider for a while. In addition to the arguments that have been made I would add that Roland has been slinging for potentially thousands of years and that amount of experience counts for a lot, IMO. I disagree that Roland wouldn't sacrifice Oy. It's in his character to use his companions that way. That was the whole point of the story of his manhood test. He raised his hawk, David, since he was a little boy but didn't hesitate to sacrifice him to beat Cort.
