Who would win in the game of chess?

Netflix's Queen's gambit protagonist or Magnus Carlsen? (I spelled title wrong)

Round 1: Beth is EoS. Magnus is 15

Round 2: Beth is EoS. Magnus is current but blindfolded with moves read to him

Beth can use drugs

Who would win in blitz? 5 mins

Who would win in classical? 30 mins

What’s her feats? And under the 5 + 3 rules, what has she done in blitz?

She beat 7 russian grandmasters, and has everything before that. She won a blitz tournament against some 2150 elo guy.

Changed rules to classical too

I can't tell if Beth's games are blitz or classical. The moves are done quickly, but if I remember correctly there were many cuts, and there were also adjournments which I think only exist in classical games. World championships in real life are classical as well.

If her games are classical then we have little bearing on how good she is in blitz, to my memory, aside from her mother's statement that the moves Beth gets applauded for the most are the ones she makes quickly. If her games are blitz, Beth would destroy him if we look at her moves, since the producers used engines to improve on grandmaster games.

@bladeoffury:

‘World championships in real life are classical as well.’

That’s the classical championship. World Championships for blitz and rapid also exist, both of which Magnus is also the World Champion in.

‘If her games are blitz, Beth would destroy him if we look at her moves, since the producers used engines to improve on grandmaster games.’

Depends on the improvements and the level of Grandmasters. Magnus is the most accurate player in history and has blitzed out moves with engine precision for sustained moves, especially in the end-game where he’s pretty much god-like.

I also recall a match between him and Caruana in 2018 before their WCC where Magnus had an advantage in the late middle game but Caruana banged out like 20 engine moves in a row and was able to draw it. He’s number two so Magnus can and has done better.

@icetortoise: 7 at once? Back to back? How strong were they since Grandmaster starts at 2500.

‘She won a blitz tournament against some 2150 elo guy.’

Is this her best feat? That’s straight up awful. It’s not even IM-level and Magnus regularly curbstomps 2700+ super GMs.

Still not good enough. With chess knowledge increasing every generation and the improvements of engines, modern players will always have an advantage over their predecessors. There were four world champions in the 1960s- Botvinnik, Tal, Petrosian and Spassky so I’d ask which one she beat but it doesn’t matter since any current top 10 player should be able to beat these WCs.

@socajunkie: Remember, Magnus is 15 or blindfolded here. He's not beating someone who drastically improved on Vasily Ivanchuk's (classical? game) in a blitz match.

You should watch the show btw, it's amazing.
