@vashtanerada88: He never actually killed sea monsters, it was a story he made up to impress people. When asked how many he killed Beowulf said 9, then Wiglaf mutters to one of Beowulf's men 'Last time it was 3.'

@paragonnate: While he may have embellished on his kill count. But it was Unferth who called Beowulf out on losing the race, saying how he was second to Breca. He admits to losing but also saving Breca and fighting for himself. Plus, he starts by saying they were on their 5th day of swimming. And considering what else he has done its not so farfetched for him like overpowering Grendal H2H who was literally ripping people apart and squeezing them dry. Begin at 3:40
