Recap

Ruby revealed she’s the one that wrote the Necronomicon after Ash cut off the face from the book, which then attached itself to Pablo’s face. Now that the book is in Ruby’s possession, she plans on unleashing all the evil within upon the world. The Amanda Deadite busts into the cabin and grabs Ash’s chainsaw. Kelly continues to try pulling the Neccronomicon face off Pablo. Pablo’s eyes suddenly turn red and a voice tells Kelly to stay back. Ruby then smacks Kelly across the room and grabs Pablo. Ash manages to get the chaonsaw away from Amanda and uses it to chop through her. After wiping Amanda’s blood off his face, he looks around and notices Pablo is missing. He also sees the door to the cellar is open.

Ash is determined to go after Ruby to get his book and Pablo back. The guy at the bookstore said the Necronomicon was written by the Dark One. When Ash tells Kelly and “Other Girl” (Heather) to stay up and make sure the door stays open, Kelly insists she’s going too. Ash finally agrees when Evil forces enter the cabin and knock him down the stairs.

The door shuts and Ash is suddenly back in his camper the night he accidentally read from the book. The girl with the tattoo on her wrist wants Ash to read from it but he refuses and sees Ruby sitting on the other side of the camper. She tells Ash she doesn’t want to hurt him or his friends. She just wants to restore the dark forces across the world. Everything is in chaos and she wants it all consolidated under her rule. She says Ash is the only real obstacle in her way. She asks him want he wants to get out of the way. Finding a postcard from Jacksonville, she tries tempting him with his dream vacation there. When he refuses her terms of a truce, he’s sent flying back to the cellar.

Kelly and Heather can’t open the cellar door. When she tries shooting the door, the door starts bleeding. The tape recorder starts up as Kelly starts using an axe on the door. Heather starts freaking out and Kelly has to talk sense into her. She’s then forced out of the cabin. She can hear Heather inside screaming and soon it’s too late for her. Heather’s severed head starts laughing, saying Ash failed and the world is doomed.

Ash explores the cellar and is reminded of what happened years ago. He can hear Pablo and comes across Ruby forcing new evil to come out of his mouth. The new demon crawls up the wall and through the ground. Ash starts talking to himself trying to figure out the to do and another demon kid comes in behind him. Ash can’t bring himself to shoot it and it jumps at him, clawing and biting him. He finally shoves the shotgun in ints mouth and shoots it.

Outside, Kelly finds a gan of gasoline and a flare. She pours it on the cabin and sets it on fire. The cabin appears to be bleeding and the door finally opens. Kelly runs inside.

Ash goes into the room where Pablo and Ruby are. She makes a move towards him with blackened eyes. He starts shooting her with the shotgun. He’s about to finish her when she mutters something. Pablo has no choice but to attack Ash. Kelly encounters more demon kids but they just scream and run past her.

Pablo begs Ash to kill him as Ruby’s wounds heal. Pablo knocks Ash back and grabs the shotgun. He’s about to shoot, taunting him in a demon voice when Kelly runs in and knocks the shotgun out of his hands. Ruby writes down something else in a page with blood. She grabs Ash by the throat and tells him her book needs a new cover. Using her blade, she starts cutting Ash’s face. He manages to distract her as she’s cutting and gets the blade away from her. It turns out the blade can harm her and he corners her, demanding she take the Necronomicon face off Pablo. Pablo and Kelly are struggling. Pablo begs Ash to help him stop. Ruby tries offering Ash the deal to walk away and live a life he’s always wanted. Ash refuses the deal unless she includes his friends and ten thousand dollars. When Ruby explains she's not a bank, Ash suggests gas money.

Ash accepts the truce despite Pablo begging him not to give in. After a bright flash, they’re back in the car. Pablo and Kelly can’t believe he took the deal. Ash says Ruby’s just going to tidy up all the evil. An emergency broadcast comes on the radio but Ash refuses to listen to it. As they drive on towards Jacksonville (and Ash’s idea of paradise), the ground opens up behind them.

Thoughts

This was one of the bloodiest and goriest episodes. It’s a fitting end to the season. This is what the series has been leading up to. With a ten-episode season, we've been able to see Ash go on an extended journey in fighting the evil unleashed from the Necronomicon. The season, as a whole, has worked for the most part. There have been some episodes that felt too short with the action feeling rushed. What we can take away, especially after watching the marathon leading up to the season finale, the episodes together flow nicely creating the oversized story different from the movie-length formats we've had.

In this finale, it all comes down to Ash being able to make the right choices. The idea of Ash actually making a correct decision almost seems laughable but he has grown and evolved some throughout this season. Perhaps it's having Pablo and Kelly to care about that's given him the incentive or motivation to put everything to an end. In the closing scene, you can see how it could've been an end to the series had it not been immediately picked up for a second season. Thankfully it's not the end. While it makes a satisfying season finale, it would've left too much in the air if it had been the end of it all.

Lucy Lawless' Ruby really shows her true colors here. With the truce that Ash made with her, he's given her the keys to the kingdom. He was barely able to fight her throughout this season. Next season things are bound to get worse with all the power she's likely to have. The season's ending has left things pretty open and the next season has plenty of options in where it can take us.

Ash vs Evil Dead has delivered a great first season. It's given us all the action, gore, suspense, and humor we could have asked for. The show introduced and made us care about Kelly and Pablo. I would prefer the episodes to be closer to the forty minute mark, like the first and last have been. Other than that, there's not much to complain about. It's hard to believe ten weeks have gone by since the show started. Now we just have to wait until the second season. It's going to be a tough wait. Watching Ash vs Evil Dead Saturday nights has been like hanging out with friends--friends that tend to get covered in blood and gore pretty often.

This was a bloody good season finale (emphasis on bloody). Oh, and poor, poor Heather...

Season 2 is gonna be really good. I just wish I know when it's gonna be this year. Also, I wonder if Mia from the 2013 remake will make a appearance or two and teams up with Ash, Pablo, and Kelly.

What a great first season. This didn't really feel like a season finale to me but it was still a fantastic episode.

I was hoping Heather would make it, I feel so bad for the innocent civilians that die due to the Book. Great season though.

I enjoyed this show very much. It's become one of my favorite shows on TV right now. It's in my Top 5 favorite shows that are on right now. Can't wait for the 2nd season.

About this episode. Three things.

  1. I really liked this episode.
  2. Anytime something weird happened Ash would say something I was thinking like some weird demon thing showed up I think what the hell? & A few seconds later Ash said the same thing I was thinking. I thought that was funny.
  3. It kinda bugs me that Ash took the deal. On the one hand, I get it just want to get out of all the deadite stuff, one the other hand if I was Ash and learning that Ruby had she wrote the book, the same book that led to the death of my friends and girlfriend, I would have killed her and lived the normal life in Florida.

Side note, I would find it funny if Jeffrey Donovan shows up in Ash vs Evil Dead if the second seaon opens up in Florida. & Ash drinking mojitos. I would get a kick out of it since Bruce Campbell was on Burn Notice and that took place in Miami, Florida. If any of that happens that would make my day. Would it happen doubtful but it's fun to think about.

@saoakden: I automatically assumed the show would open like burn notice dream sequence and then micheal or fionna end up being a deadite.

Well it was a unique season ender. Rarely do you see the hero just willingly giving in to the forces of darkness.

Due to her annoying scream, I was kind of happy she got clocked.

This and the one with the militia are the only two I did not like. The pacing and choreography were off. Many, many things made no sense. They just happened. And I don't mean stuff that might be explained next season or never. I mean things like Ash doing battle in one room in the basement, right next door to Ruby and Pedro/Pablo, and the latter two never seemed to notice or care to stop him. Or why the cabin let Kelly inside because she lit it on fire. Yes, one can make up excuses for these things here, but they are all part of a general sloppiness I found in this episode.

Was this season a lot of fun? Yeah. Recommendable? With reservations because of this final ep.

Season went quick. Kinda wish this show was an hour but I also like that old school leave you thirsty for more 30 minute vibe. Really happy with this series. Evil Dead is a rare breed. Every incarnation is different from the last and somehow it avoids criticism (for the most part.)
