Everyone at Comic Vine is pleased to announce the Comic Vine API.  Using the API, we hope our users can find crazy new ways to use our data.  If you're a developer, check out the API site and sign up for an API key.

This forum should be used for any questions regarding the API, including technical questions.  If you're having trouble with something, post a question.  I'll be frequenting regularly to answer any questions.

We're also planning on adding more data to the API in the near future.  If you have a cool idea but can't find the data you need, please ask.

It's an application programming interface. With it, people can create applications that use Giant Bomb's data."
Replace Giant Bomb with Comic Vine, and there's the short answer. If you want, you can read more about it on Wikipedia.

It's all data. Just pure data. Any formatting has to be done by the application using the API.
See the documentation for details.

If someone's making a program or script that uses Comic Vine's data, they'll be able to use it. That's who it's intended for, but it could also be used by other people who just want to look at the data.

You can click where it says "Comic Vine API."  It's not something for everyone.  Basically if you're a developer and would love to use our data (for non-commerical uses).

That's really sweet.  I've been really wanting to write a comic inventory program for a while now.  A sweet comicvine API is just what I needed.

Imagine if you will if you could create a website, a webapplication on your own displaying information from the Comic Vine database. You can only READ the information. You can API as a bridge, I think. Your program is Manhattan and the Comic Vine is Brooklyn, the Cars would be information, and the API would be a One-Way-only Brooklyn Bridge.

Information can be your program "asks" comicvine's API for «Superman» and then it gets a list of all the issues Superman was into: Action Comics #1, Action Comics #2, Action Comics #3, Superman #1, Superman #2, and so on..... it this making any sense at all?

Does this mean I can create a comic inventory program for my home PC and using my own collection from the API page?

Yes. I'd suggest looking into Comicster (Comicster.net). It's a comic inventory program for your PC that has a ComicVine data plug-in (in development).

I downloaded it thru explorer, it wouldn't work with google chrome.
I went ahead and installed it and am currently looking it over and slowly adding stuff.

@Donovan Montgomery: The Comic Vine plug-in (not completely done yet) can be downloaded from the bitbucket (code) page at https://bitbucket.org/mabster/comicster/downloads . To use it, just copy it to <user>/Documents/Comicster and change your default catalog to Comic Vine under Tools menu. Then link your titles, then you can download issue, title, character, creator details and images from CV into your collection.

There's a couple more plug-ins there (IO.CMX to import v1 Comicster databases, CMX Merger to merge v1 Comicster databases, Searches.ComicAges adds more predefined searches, etc.) on that site.

Additionally, I have developed 2 plug-ins that can downloaded at http://www.jamesewelch.com/tag/comicster/

Maybe add users. And PMs. So I can search for a specific PM (the hard way).

I've been trying to use the api resource "issues", passing my apikey and the publish_year of 2012 and instead of getting a limited number of books, I get a result set somewhere in the 200,000 book range. I know that can't be right simple because the results shows older books than those published in 2012. Can tell me how to get the "newest" book listings? Here's what I have so far.

Hi ComicVine developers !

First, thank you for your API, it's amazing.

Second, what license information should I include on my application using the ComicVine API? My application is open-source (MIT license), and I mention ComicVine on every page (in the footer, and also on the "About" page), but I'd like to say "the data are a property of ComicVine", or something similar. What's the correct way to do it?

Thank you for your answer!
