Ghost Rider Announced for Agents of SHIELD Season 4

At the Agents of SHIELD panel at San Diego Comic-Con, there was a lot of reminiscing about the past three seasons. Since they just started filming yesterday, there wasn't any new footage to show for Season 4. They did drop a big bomb on the panel at the end with a short teaser.

"Vengeance comes this fall."

It was assumed the flaming chains seen in the promo images around San Diego were for Hellfire. It made a little sense since he sided with Hive in Season 3. The question was: Why would he be such a big part of the image for the next season? There was some speculation that perhaps Ghost Rider would be in the show because of the chains. That made less sense since he doesn't have a connection to S.H.I.E.L.D in the comics. It turns out that is what is happening.

Gabriel Luna (True Detective, Matador) will take on the role of Robbie Reyes in the next season. Based on Luna's age, there are obviously some changes being made to the character.

"Season 4 will unquestionably be the series' biggest, most ambitious story yet, and it all begins with the introduction of one of our greatest legacy characters in Ghost Rider," said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. "When the Spirit of Vengeance rides into SHIELD, it'll change everything."

Here's the first meeting of FitzSimmons in Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge's screentest.

Chloe Bennet and Brett Dalton's first screentest was also shown.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD returns on Tuesday, September 20, at 10 PM EST.

Reyes, eh? Wonder if that means we will get Blaze or Ketch on Netflix or an MCU film.

At least we're moving away from Inhumans dominating the show.

Now add in the Zodiac for season 5 so we can move away from Hydra. Hydra isn't the only super-terrorist organization, Marvel!

So this means the main villain will be Nic Cage in the upcoming season? Just kidding, awesome news!

Nice, hope they do Ghos Rider justifice this time. Interesting that they went with Reyes.

I feel that with how last season ended with AIDA and now Ghost Rider, that chapter is probably closed and will just be a side-issue. I'm hoping we get more actually enhanced people - and more people with secret identities.

I'm glad they are going with East LA Ghost Rider. As corny as it is, I am excited to see a super hero character who resides and represents my neighborhood. EAST LA all day... even though I'm moving to MI in a month. (+)

At least it's not Blaze or even Ketch, so the Bike Riders can still do their thing elsewhere.

Funny thing--this is the introduction of supernatural elements into the TV end of the MCU.

Guys it's Robbie Reyes. We can still have Norman Reedus on Netflix as Ketch or Blaze...

It would have been better if they went for Eric Brooks first instead of the more powerful Ghost Rider family. This just messes up the Ghost Rider lineage and instead of Blaze, we get to see Robbie first.

And if Marvel is going in this direction and is still planning to have Blaze show up in the MCU, IMO they might be going for the modern leather jacket Blaze instead of the 70's unitard Blaze.

@rogueshadow: you sure? They've had that chain from the promo image on a few of the trolleys in downtown San Diego for a few months now. I just assumed it was already confirmed.

Color me intrigued. Might actually bring myself to watch Agents of SHIELD now. I am however, curious as to how they intend to do a blatantly supernatural character in a Marvel Universe that's not supposed to have any "true" magic...

Hoping we get this someday in the MCU.

Been better if they went with Blaze. Would also make sense as he was the original Ghost Rider character. Plus not a big fan of Reyes.

Also them choosing Reyes feels like another PC move from Marvel among their latest stints of PC with their series and characters.

So they are putting a Ghost Rider on the screen... but its the one the fewest people know and care about?

I must not know enough about GR... but why is it a car and not a motorcycle?? Am I way off?

@outside_85: Reyes was created a few years to be a different kind of ghost rider, car and all. Also the motorcycle isn't a must for ghost riders, 2006 ghost rider line gave us a bit of history of the ghost riders and they all used different modes of transportation(plane,tank,car,rhino,alpaca,etc)

As a big Ghost Rider fan I can't seem to care about this news. I put this show on par with all of the horrible DC shows on CW and Supergirl. He needs to be done right too make up for those horrible Nic Cage portrayals and Reyes? Really? What a waste.

@ravenkingxxx: Thanks, I know all of that... hence why I wonder why they went with the least well known version of the Ghost Riders. It's especially problematic since we already have two (rubbish) movies with the motorcycle riding Ghost Rider... so when anyone says Ghost Rider, its going to be a guy in leathers on a big flaming bike... not a dude in jumpsuit and a souped up Mustang.

An argument could ofc be made that Alejandra is even less well know, but atleast she looked like the Ghost Rider everyone knows... plus she's a female, but I suspect they may have looked past her due to the amount of strong female characters thats already in the show.

@outside_85: probably they chose Reyes because he has less of a history/exposure so they can do more with him without pissing people off. Not to mention his design makes a lot more sense budget wise for a tv show. Also he isn't as powerful as the others, so they have a reason as to why he can't be the answer to all the problems.

Two things. One does anyone know where I can catch up on the last three seasons. And two holy crap my fanfiction is coming true this can only mean one thing, and m psychic.

The cast Nicolas Cage, twice, for the movie role... I think they are pretty much indifferent about the feelings of genuine GR fans.

Ehh... no, because a car is just that much bigger and they have alot more they need to animate when it finally transforms.

Thats a thing in comics, comics power levels and those in TV and movies (and often cartoons) are often worlds apart regardless... like Ferrigno's Hulk wasn't exactly a worthy opponent for the comic version.

Screw this. I want to see the badass Ghost Rider, not the Teenage Ghost Driver.

Well. At least we can still see Johnny Blaze/Danny Ketch on the big screen/Netflix/anything that I remotely care about.

It seems the writers wanted to use the main Ghost Rider, but MARVEL were probably like "But you're Agents of SHIELD..." and gave them the Rider that is the least tied to the universe.

Its really more likely that they chose Reyes, because Marvel Studios didn't allow them to use Blaze.

As much as I love Reyes, I feel like Daniel Ketch would have been better for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

If they didn't want to use Blaze, then they had Ketch as an alternative. Somebody who's a major character in the GR Mythos.

But they're not even using Ketch. So what's so great about Reyes over Ketch?

Only thing (and not trying to sound racist here or anything) that comes to mind would be the fact of him being a different ethnicity. Other than that there's no reason why they couldn't use Ketch.

Netflix.

Reyes fits with the story. Mr Hyde was a huge part of his series.
